Set a destination in Google Maps, tap Start, and let turn-by-turn navigation begin. For many Android Auto users, the speedometer returns only after a route is active. If it still does not appear, verify the Speedometer setting in Google Maps on your phone.

Why the speedometer disappeared

Google Maps’ live speedometer began rolling out to Android Auto users in 2026. Its availability is controlled by account, region and Google’s server-side rollout, so two drivers can have different behavior even with the same app version.

Reports in September 2026 described the speedometer, speed-limit indicator, traffic signals and stop signs disappearing for some Android Auto users. Google’s Android Auto product team, as relayed by Android Authority on September 11, 2026, explained that showing these indicators while no destination is set was still being rolled out. In practice, the indicators may be available during active navigation but absent when you are only browsing the map.

That is why installing an update may not immediately restore the display: the change can depend on Google enabling the feature for your account or region on its servers.

The quickest way to restore it

  1. Open Google Maps through Android Auto, or open Maps on the Android phone connected to your car.
  2. Search for the place you want to drive to.
  3. Select the destination and tap Start to begin turn-by-turn navigation.
  4. Check the Android Auto car display for the speedometer and speed-limit indicator.

This destination workaround is supported by Android Authority’s September 11, 2026 report and a SlashGear how-to report published October 14, 2026. It does not permanently change rollout eligibility; it simply places Maps in the navigation state where the indicators are currently more likely to appear.

Check the Google Maps Speedometer setting

If the indicators remain missing during an active route, check the phone-side setting. The label can appear as your profile picture or an initial, depending on your account display.

What you should see in each Maps state

Maps state Expected indicator behavior Why it matters
Destination selected and Start tapped The speedometer and speed-limit indicator may appear on the Android Auto display. This is the current practical workaround for users affected by the no-destination rollout.
Map open with no active route The speedometer, speed limit, traffic signals and stop signs may be absent. Google is still staging no-destination display for some accounts and regions.
Phone-side Speedometer setting disabled The Maps speedometer will not be enabled through that setting. Turning it on is a necessary check, but it cannot override server-side availability.

If it still does not return

  • Confirm navigation is actually running: A destination shown on the map is not enough; tap Start and verify that turn-by-turn guidance has begun.
  • Recheck the setting on the phone: Android Auto’s car screen may not expose the full Maps settings path, so use the connected phone.
  • Restart the navigation session: End the route, begin it again, and allow the car display to reconnect.
  • Do not assume an app update is the fix: Google controls this capability partly through a staged server rollout, so an updated app can still lack the indicators.
  • Expect account or regional differences: The feature can be present for one user and unavailable for another without a hardware fault.

Accuracy and safety warning

Google Maps Help says: “Speedometers shown in the Google Maps app are for informational use only.” Google also warns that external factors can make the Maps reading differ from your actual speed. Use the vehicle’s instrument-cluster speedometer as the authoritative reading, and follow posted limits even if Maps shows a different value.

  • Important Compatibility Check - PLEASE READ: This adapter is ONLY compatible with cars equipped with Factory Wired CarPlay or Android Auto (Model Years 2016-2025). ❌ NOT compatible with BMW, Tesla, or vehicles without a wired system. For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.

The Maps display is therefore a convenience overlay, not a replacement for the car’s certified speed measurement. A missing Maps speedometer does not mean the vehicle’s speed sensor or Android Auto connection is malfunctioning.

What this means for Android Auto drivers

The current behavior is best understood as a staged feature rather than a setting that every user can force on. Starting a route is the most reliable immediate step. The phone setting controls whether Maps is allowed to show the speedometer, while Google’s account, region and server rollout determine where and when the indicator is delivered—especially when no destination is active.

No cable, adapter, mount or GPS accessory will restore this in-app indicator. The remedy is a Google Maps and Android Auto software state, so buying hardware cannot bypass the rollout.
