If your flight is diverted to Abu Dhabi, contact the airline operating it before arranging a trip to Dubai. Confirm where the flight has landed, whether it will continue, and whether the airline is organizing transport. Your options may include an eligible, pre-booked Etihad Shuttle, a bus from Abu Dhabi city, or a taxi—but none should be assumed available or reimbursable without confirmation.

1. Confirm the airline’s plan before leaving the airport

Speak to the operating airline’s staff or disruption desk and ask:

  • Where did the flight actually land, and is it continuing, returning, or ending at that airport?
  • Is the airline arranging transport or accommodation, and should passengers wait for further instructions?
  • If you need to reach Dubai independently, will the airline authorize or reimburse that travel?

Abu Dhabi’s official travel advisory tells affected travelers to contact their airline or travel provider. It says alternative arrangements may be supported where possible; it does not guarantee a Dubai transfer or reimbursement for every diversion. Any support described during a specific major incident is incident-specific, not a general promise for ordinary diversions.

2. Check whether the Etihad Shuttle can take you

Etihad describes a complimentary shuttle between Zayed International Airport and Dubai, but it is not a walk-up option for every diverted passenger. Etihad’s FAQ says a confirmed reservation is required and should be made at least 24 hours before travel; it also lists eligibility limits and exclusions. A diversion does not itself create a reservation. Ask airline staff whether your ticket and changed travel plan qualify or whether they can accommodate you.

Etihad’s shuttle information places the Dubai stop near Al Wasl Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road and estimates the Abu Dhabi–Dubai journey at about 75 minutes. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed arrival time, and you may need another ride to reach your final destination. An Etihad update dated 26 June 2026 says the service applies to Etihad-operated flights and names Economy and Business Value eligibility. Because rules can vary by fare family and change, verify your specific itinerary through the live booking channel or airline desk. Etihad also says that in specified delay or cancellation circumstances, alternative transport may be at the passenger’s cost.

3. Take the inter-emirate bus if you can reach the station and timing works

Abu Dhabi Mobility lists Dubai-bound E100, E101, and E102 services from Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station. Its inter-emirate services page lists daily trips and a fare of AED 25, with tickets available at station customer happiness offices. Check the current timetable, route status, and ticket arrangements before setting out.

These routes are listed from the main bus station, not as direct departures from Zayed International Airport. The airport A1 bus timetable shows service from Terminal A to Abu Dhabi city stops, including Al Zahiyah Bus Station, but you must check the current A1 timetable and work out the onward connection to the main bus station. Do not assume that reaching an A1 stop completes the connection. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s local bus fare information treats inter-city services separately, so confirm the payment rules for each leg instead of adding fares together by assumption.

4. Use a taxi or car transfer when a direct trip matters

A taxi avoids the bus-station connection, but the published fare components are not a quoted Abu Dhabi–Dubai total. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s taxi fare page lists an airport flagfall of AED 20, AED 1.82 per kilometre, AED 0.50 per minute of waiting, and a booking fee that varies between day and night. Ask for the fare details before traveling; no route-specific all-in quote is established here.

Abu Dhabi Mobility lists taxi booking through its app or by phone at 600 53 53 53 within the UAE, or +971 2 4186000 from outside the UAE. For a pre-booked car, verify the live price, pickup location, and cancellation terms directly with the provider. If you book transport yourself, keep receipts and any written airline instructions in case you later ask about reimbursement.

Which option fits your situation?

Option What to verify Published cost or time Important connection or limit
Etihad Shuttle Eligible flight and fare, confirmed reservation, and whether the airline can accommodate the diversion Described by Etihad as complimentary for eligible passengers; about 75 minutes to the Dubai stop, per Etihad’s current shuttle page Stops near Al Wasl Centre; onward Dubai transport may be needed
Inter-emirate bus Live route status, timetable, and ticket arrangements AED 25 per passenger, per Abu Dhabi Mobility’s current service page Leaves from Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station; arrange the airport-to-station leg separately
Taxi Current fare details and pickup arrangements Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes fare components, not an airport-to-Dubai total Direct trip; total depends on the journey and applicable charges
Pre-booked car Live price, pickup point, and cancellation terms with the provider Not stated in the official sources cited here Can suit groups, luggage, or late arrivals; confirm the arrangement directly

For reduced mobility, medical needs, or unusually large luggage, tell airline and transport staff before choosing a route. Etihad’s FAQ lists medical or reduced-mobility exclusions for its shuttle; confirm what assistance or alternative transport is available for your specific situation.

Will the airline pay for the trip to Dubai?

A diversion alone does not establish that the airline will pay for a separate transfer or reimburse one you arrange yourself. The answer depends on the flight and the airline’s instructions for that disruption; the public Abu Dhabi advisory does not promise a particular transport entitlement. Ask the operating airline before paying when possible, and retain receipts if you must make your own arrangements.
