If you mean real, spendable Ethereum, you can’t get it for free through MetaMask’s faucet. MetaMask’s faucet provides testnet ETH for trying apps and transactions; it has no real-world value and cannot be moved to Ethereum mainnet. If you’re asking “How to get free Ethereum in MetaMask?” to test a project, use MetaMask’s testnet guidance and its linked faucet instructions.
What “free Ethereum” means in MetaMask
Ethereum test networks let developers try decentralized apps and smart contracts before release. They use test ETH to simulate transactions, but testnet balances are separate from real ETH on mainnet. MetaMask states that testnet ETH has no real-world value and cannot be converted into real value or sent to mainnet. A wallet or app showing a fiat estimate does not change that. So a faucet claim is useful for testing, not earning, cashing out, or acquiring spendable ETH.

How to get testnet ETH using MetaMask’s faucet guidance
- Choose the network for your test. MetaMask’s developer documentation identifies Sepolia and Linea as networks supported by its testnet faucet. For Ethereum dapp application testing, MetaMask recommends Sepolia. Check the live MetaMask testnets page for the current faucet instructions and availability.
- Enable testnets if needed. MetaMask says Sepolia is available by default, but testnets must be enabled in the network selector. Follow the current instructions in MetaMask’s testnet ETH guide.
- Use the faucet instructions linked by MetaMask. The developer documentation links to the Infura testnet faucet guide. Follow the live steps there for the selected network rather than relying on a third-party offer.
- Confirm the selected network in your wallet. Testnet ETH is usable only within its test network; it is not a mainnet balance and cannot be sent to mainnet.
Faucet amounts, claim limits, eligibility requirements, and uptime are not established here and may change. Check MetaMask’s live documentation instead of assuming a particular quantity or guaranteed claim.

Which test network should you use?

How to recognize a fake “convert test ETH” offer
Be wary if someone offers testnet ETH in exchange for an NFT, physical item, game asset, or other valuable asset. MetaMask describes scams in which a fraudster persuades a recipient that test tokens are valuable, then promises a conversion or invents a deadline. Testnet ETH cannot be converted into real value, so a conversion service claiming otherwise is not a legitimate way to cash out.
- Do not trade anything valuable for testnet ETH.
- Do not follow a cash-out link or deadline supplied by an unsolicited sender.
- Do not assume a displayed dollar value means the test tokens can be sold or redeemed.

Protect your wallet if an unexpected token or transaction appears
An airdropped token may be part of a scam. MetaMask warns that a failed transaction can be used to direct someone to a fraudulent site that tries to obtain their Secret Recovery Phrase or get them to approve access to tokens. Do not follow a supposed cash-out route in a token description or failed-transaction message, and do not sign an unfamiliar approval.
