To get airline delay updates on your phone, add your reservation to the app of the airline operating your flight, turn on push notifications in both the app and your phone’s settings, and make sure the booking has your current mobile number and email address. If the airline offers text or email alerts, subscribe to those as a backup. When an alert arrives, open the airline’s app or website to review your itinerary and available options: receiving an alert does not itself rebook your trip.
How to turn on airline delay notifications
- Find the operating airline. Check each flight on your itinerary, especially if one airline sold the ticket and another operates the flight. The operating carrier’s app and alert coverage are usually the relevant ones for that segment.
- Open the airline’s official app and sign in if required. Add or retrieve your booking using its trip-management feature. Qatar Airways, for example, directs customers to add a booking under “My Trips” and enable push notifications in the app (Qatar Airways app guidance).
- Enable app alerts in two places. Turn on flight or trip notifications inside the airline app, then allow notifications for that app in your phone’s operating-system settings. App-level preferences cannot override a phone setting that blocks notifications.
- Check the booking’s contact details. Confirm that the reservation has a current mobile number and email address. JetBlue advises customers to keep their contact details current through trip management (JetBlue Customer Service Plan).
- Subscribe to any separate alerts. If the carrier offers SMS or email flight alerts, sign up for them as well. Some airlines provide alerts through several channels, while others require a separate flight-specific signup.
- Before leaving, check the flight status. Use the carrier’s app or flight-status page, then reopen your reservation if the schedule changes or a disruption occurs. Keep your phone charged; a power bank can be useful, but it is optional.
Will the airline text or push an alert for every delay?
Not necessarily. Alert channels and triggering events vary by airline, flight, country, and booking setup. A carrier may offer push notifications, texts, email, or a mix, and a codeshare or a flight in a particular country may not qualify for every alert type.
| Airline example | What its published guidance says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | Offers BeNotified preferences for flights and notifications for a specific flight; customers can review trip changes in the app and choose another available flight. | These are distinct alert routes, so check which one covers the trip you want to monitor. American flight notifications |
| JetBlue | Lists app, email, text, push, and other notification channels. | Keep reservation contact details current; channel availability does not mean every event will be delivered through every channel. JetBlue Customer Service Plan |
| ANA | Describes app and SMS alerts for several types of service changes. | Some codeshare flights operated by other carriers and some countries are excluded from certain notifications. ANA service information email |
| Qatar Airways | Recommends adding a booking to My Trips and enabling app push notifications. | Follow the app’s setup instructions for the booking. Qatar Airways app guidance |
| Singapore Airlines | Says booking alerts can arrive by email or app push when the trip is added to its app; disruption alerts include cancellations, delays, and flight-time changes. | The described alert setup depends on adding the trip to the app. Singapore Airlines booking alerts |
These carrier descriptions explain available features, not which airline sends alerts fastest. For U.S. flights, the Department of Transportation (DOT) says airlines must provide a subscriber’s notification by the method the subscriber selected. Separately, for flights scheduled to depart within seven days, airlines must provide flight-status updates no later than 30 minutes after learning of a status change, with the airline website and telephone reservation system as minimum sources. That requirement is not a promise that every app push notification arrives immediately. See the DOT Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard.

What to do when a delay or cancellation alert arrives
- Open the reservation in the official app or website. Check whether the flight time changed, the flight was canceled, a connection is at risk, or the airline has already assigned a new itinerary.
- Review available choices and deadlines. Read any response deadline before accepting or changing an itinerary. Do not assume that tapping or receiving the notification has accepted or rejected the airline’s proposed change.
- Use the trip-management tool to act. American says customers can review trip changes in its app, choose another available flight, and get a new boarding pass there. Its delayed or canceled flight support page also recommends enabling push notifications for status updates and boarding reminders. Available options depend on the airline and the booking; an app may not show every alternative a traveler wants.
- Try another official channel if needed. If the app does not show an option you need, check the airline’s website, contact its customer service, or speak with airport staff.
- Keep relevant records. Save the alert and original itinerary if you may need them for a refund request or another claim.
U.S. refund rights are different from rebooking alerts
This guidance applies to U.S. flights and DOT refund rules; other countries may have different protections. If an airline cancels a flight or makes a significant change, a passenger may be entitled to a refund if they choose not to travel or accept a rebooking, travel credit, voucher, or other offered compensation. If the passenger accepts and travels on an alternative, the refund outcome is different. Airlines must tell affected passengers about refund rights. Check the current DOT refunds guidance and the carrier’s terms; watch email, texts, and app notifications because an offer may include a response deadline.

Refund rights are not the same as an airline’s service commitments during a disruption. The DOT dashboard lists carrier-specific commitments for services during controllable disruptions. Check the relevant airline’s entry rather than assuming every carrier must provide the same meals, hotel arrangements, or rebooking on another airline.

- Check the phone’s notification settings. Make sure alerts are allowed for the airline app, including any focus or do-not-disturb settings that could suppress them.
- Check the app and reservation. Confirm you are signed in, the correct booking is visible, and the app’s flight-alert preferences are enabled.
- Verify the contact information and alert signup. Correct an outdated number or email in the booking and confirm that any separate SMS or per-flight notification signup is complete.
- Check who operates the affected flight. For a codeshare, the ticketing airline’s app may not cover every operating-carrier update. ANA, for instance, identifies codeshare and country exclusions for some alerts.
- Look up the flight directly. Consult the operating airline’s flight-status page or contact the carrier instead of relying only on a push alert.
American Airlines’ 2026 description of its digital flight-information experience emphasizes pairing self-service tools with explanations so customers have more transparency during disruptions (American Airlines Newsroom). In practice, the app is useful for acting on a change, but checking the actual itinerary and its terms remains essential.
