To get a Tanzanian IP address while you are abroad, connect to a VPN server located in Tanzania. Check that the provider currently offers a Tanzania location and that your plan includes it, then verify the public IP before using the website or service you need. A VPN location does not guarantee that every site will accept the connection.
What you need for a Tanzanian IP address
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server in another location. For a website to see a Tanzanian public IP, the VPN connection must exit through a server located in Tanzania. A VPN connection to a server in some other country will not provide a Tanzanian IP.
Two providers whose official pages list Tanzania servers are Proton VPN and NordVPN. These are examples, not a ranking. Proton says its Tanzania location is not available on its Free plan. NordVPN’s server list names Tanzania, but that listing alone does not establish which plan includes it. Check the provider’s current app and plan details before subscribing.
How to connect to a Tanzania VPN server
- Check the location and plan. Confirm that Tanzania appears as a server location and that your subscription includes it. Do not assume a free tier provides access.
- Install the VPN app and sign in. Use the provider’s official app for your device. Proton documents apps for major desktop and mobile platforms on its Tanzania server page.
- Select Tanzania and connect. Choose the Tanzania location in the app. If the provider shows multiple servers, select one and wait for the app to confirm the connection.
- Verify the public IP location. Use an IP-checking page to see what country the public IP is associated with. If it does not show Tanzania, reconnect or select another listed Tanzania server.
- Try the intended site or service. A Tanzanian IP does not guarantee acceptance: a website may block VPN traffic, identify the location differently, or apply its own access rules. If it fails, try another Tanzania server or ask the VPN provider for help.
What to check before choosing a provider
- Current Tanzania availability: Confirm the location in the provider’s official server list or app.
- Plan access: Check whether Tanzania is included in the plan you intend to use. Proton explicitly excludes Tanzania from its Free plan; NordVPN’s cited server list does not state plan eligibility.
- Device support: Make sure the provider offers an app for your device and operating system.
- Target-site compatibility: Neither provider’s location listing establishes that a particular website or streaming service will accept its IP.
- Privacy and security claims: Read the provider’s own documentation, and distinguish its claims from independent verification. The provider pages cited here do not establish comparative speed or universal site compatibility.
What Tanzania’s VPN notice says—and what remains unclear
The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) issued a notice dated 13 October 2023 stating that individuals and companies whose work makes VPN use indispensable must declare their VPN and relevant information, including the IP address, by 30 October 2023. The notice warns that the regulator may take action against unauthorized VPN use and refers to access to prohibited content. It states: “TCRA will proceed to take regulatory actions against unauthorized use of VPN including disabling access to such VPN.” Read the TCRA notice with its date and stated context in mind.

TCRA’s notice page showed a last-updated date of 28 July 2026, and the regulator lists an Online Content Regulations amendment published in June 2026. The material available does not establish whether the 2023 declaration deadline or requirements apply to an individual abroad connecting through a Tanzanian VPN server. It therefore does not support a blanket conclusion that VPN use is legal or illegal in Tanzania, or a definitive answer for this particular situation. If the legal question affects you, seek current clarification from TCRA or qualified Tanzanian legal advice. A VPN also does not authorize access to prohibited content.
