To get a Swedish IP address, connect to a VPN server in Sweden, then check your public IP and its reported location. Websites will generally see the VPN server’s address instead of your ordinary public IP. This changes the IP-based location they can infer; it does not make you anonymous or guarantee that a particular service will accept the connection.
How a Swedish IP address works
Your internet provider normally assigns the public IP address that websites receive when you connect. A VPN routes your traffic through one of its servers; when you choose a Swedish server, the destination generally sees that server’s Swedish IP instead. A web proxy can also substitute its address, but it may not provide the same protection for traffic between your device and the proxy.
Sweden’s Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) explains that VPNs and web proxies replace a user’s IP with their own. It also warns that an IP address can be personal data when it can be linked to an individual. An IP change is therefore not the same as anonymity: cookies, browser and device details, your network, and the sites you visit can leave or collect other identifying traces. How to get and verify a Swedish IP
- Choose a VPN with Sweden on your plan. Check the provider’s current server list and whether Sweden is available with the subscription you intend to use. If you need the same address repeatedly, for example for an IP allowlist, check whether a dedicated Swedish IP is offered and what its terms are.
- Install the provider’s app on the device you will use to access the website or service.
- Connect to Sweden. In the app’s server list or map, select Sweden and connect. The precise interface and available locations vary by provider and plan. Proton and NordVPN document selecting Sweden in their apps, but their feature descriptions are provider statements, not an independent assessment. Proton VPN’s Sweden server page says Swedish servers are not included in its Free plan and that Swedish streaming servers require Plus. NordVPN’s Sweden server page describes its Sweden locations. Check current terms before subscribing.
- Check the result. Use a reputable public-IP lookup tool to record the IP address and location it reports before and after connecting. Proton’s instructions describe this before-and-after check. Proton VPN’s IP-check instructions explain the process. A lookup’s location is an estimate based on IP data, so it may not match every website’s location decision.
Choosing between a shared and dedicated Swedish IP
Most VPN connections use an address shared with other customers. A dedicated IP is assigned for your use and may be useful when a site or workplace system allows access only from specified addresses. It does not guarantee that a website will accept the connection or treat it as a Swedish resident’s connection.

NordVPN’s support page lists Stockholm among its dedicated-IP locations; availability and terms can change. Check its current dedicated-IP server information before relying on that location. Compare providers on Sweden availability for your plan, shared versus dedicated addresses, supported devices, privacy practices, current price and refund terms, and whether the site you need accepts their IP ranges. Provider server counts, availability, and feature claims can change; there is no independent speed or streaming comparison established here.
Why a website may still think you are abroad
A Swedish VPN endpoint changes the IP address visible to a site, but services may make location decisions using other signals or may identify VPN IP ranges. SVT Play’s help page lists VPN or proxy use, dynamic IP allocation, device location settings, and app or phone-number context as possible reasons it may think someone in Sweden is abroad. Its guidance demonstrates that an IP lookup and a service’s location decision can differ; it does not establish that every service uses the same signals. SVT’s troubleshooting guidance recommends steps such as checking the IP and device settings, disabling a VPN or proxy when troubleshooting a false error, and testing another network or device.

If you are outside Sweden and a site still rejects access, try reconnecting or choosing another Swedish server if the VPN offers one. You can also clear that site’s cookies or cache, check location permissions and device settings, and consult the site’s own help page. A Swedish IP alone may not meet a service’s account, app, payment, or location requirements; those conditions vary by service.
What a VPN does—and does not—change
- It changes the public IP a destination sees: the site generally receives the VPN server’s IP rather than your ordinary public IP.
- It is not a promise of anonymity: cookies, device and browser details, network information, and activity on websites may still provide identifying traces. IMY discusses these limits in its privacy guidance.
- It does not guarantee streaming access: a platform may detect or block VPN addresses, and its own account or location rules may still apply. A provider’s claim that it supports streaming is not a guarantee for every user or service.
Legal and service-rule considerations
The legality of using a VPN and the legality of an activity conducted through it are separate questions. Rules depend on the jurisdiction and the activity; check current local law and the relevant service terms when using a VPN for a restricted service or content. A Swedish government inquiry about illegal IPTV is not a general VPN statute or a complete guide to VPN legality.
