If you’re outside New Zealand, getting a New Zealand IP address is not an approved way to watch TVNZ+ or ThreeNow: both services restrict viewing to New Zealand, and TVNZ expressly prohibits attempts to get around its location checks. If you’re physically in New Zealand but a service says you’re overseas, troubleshoot the location error instead.
Can a New Zealand IP address unlock TVNZ+ or ThreeNow overseas?
No. TVNZ says its content is unavailable to overseas viewers because its content-provider agreements do not grant rights outside New Zealand. Its House Rules say that content is only available to watch within New Zealand and prohibit attempts to get around that restriction or use technology that prevents TVNZ from verifying a viewer’s location. ThreeNow likewise says its content licenses are limited to viewers in New Zealand; see Can I use ThreeNow outside of New Zealand?.
A VPN or custom DNS setting may change the location associated with your internet connection, but neither service’s guidance says that doing so authorizes viewing from abroad or guarantees playback. Don’t buy a VPN, router, or streaming device on the assumption that it will provide access.

A VPN, proxy, or custom DNS can cause a connection to appear to come from another country. App-store country, device time, IP geolocation, cached data, and an outdated app can also be relevant. Work through these checks in order.

- Turn off location-altering network settings. Disable any VPN or proxy, and turn off custom DNS if you use it. TVNZ’s guidance is at Why is TVNZ+ saying I’m not in New Zealand when I am?; ThreeNow’s is at I’m in New Zealand. Why does the video player tell me I’m overseas?.
- Check your public IP’s detected location. Confirm that the IP address your connection presents is identified as being in New Zealand. If it is not, contact your internet provider about the connection’s location classification; an app setting cannot correct an incorrectly classified public IP.
- Check the device’s time and app-store country. Set the device’s time zone to New Zealand and verify that its Google Play or Apple App Store account is registered to New Zealand. Store country can affect whether the app is available to download. ThreeNow explains app availability and store settings here: Can I download the ThreeNow app if I am not in New Zealand?.
- Refresh the app or browser data. Clear the service’s app cache or browser cookies, then try again. Update the app; if the error remains, reinstall it.
- Contact the service’s support team if the checks do not resolve it. Explain that you are physically in New Zealand and include the troubleshooting steps you have tried.
Why the apps may not appear in an app store
ThreeNow says its app is available for download and use only within New Zealand. App visibility can depend on the country registered to your Google Play or Apple App Store account, so check the store’s country setting rather than treating an app-store listing as proof that the service can be watched from another country. Changing a store region does not grant viewing rights outside New Zealand.
