To wake a Lenovo monitor, make sure the computer is awake, the monitor has power, the correct input is selected, and the video cable is connected securely at both ends. If you use a dock, check that it is connected and that the computer detects the display. A blank screen after sleep can have several causes, so follow the branch that matches your setup.
Try these checks first
- Wake the computer. Press a key or move the mouse, then check whether the monitor displays the desktop.
- Check monitor power and input. Confirm that the power indicator is on and that the monitor’s selected input matches the port or cable connected to the computer.
- Reseat the video cable. Check both ends, including any connection at a dock. If the display stays blank, turn the monitor off and back on. Lenovo includes power-cycling the monitor in its dock troubleshooting guidance.
- Try another suitable cable. If you have one available, test a known-good cable that matches the ports and supported video mode on both devices. Changing the cable is a diagnostic check, not a guarantee that the cable is the problem.
If the monitor is connected through a Lenovo dock
A dock adds another link in the display path. Check that it is connected to the computer, then check whether the operating system recognizes the monitor. Lenovo recommends rescanning for hardware changes in Device Manager and checking monitor detection in the graphics control panel when troubleshooting dock-related display problems after waking from sleep.
If the monitor is missing from the computer’s display list, reconnect the dock and cable, then repeat the detection check. If it appears as a detected display but remains blank, verify the monitor input and try power-cycling the monitor. Lenovo’s guidance treats these as troubleshooting checks rather than a single guaranteed fix.

If the screen goes blank when you close the laptop lid
First establish whether the issue happens specifically when the laptop lid is closed. Lenovo documents a remedy for a ThinkPad P70 running Windows 10: set the plugged-in lid-close action to “Do nothing” in Power Options. The same Lenovo support article also describes selecting “Show only on 2” in Windows display settings as a workaround. These instructions are for the named P70 configuration; other Lenovo laptops or Windows versions may have different settings and behavior. See Lenovo’s ThinkPad P70 instructions.

If you have a ThinkVision P34w-20 with a USB-C wake problem
Lenovo documents a specific USB-C wake and charging issue for the ThinkVision P34w-20 on certain older firmware. Its support article recommends firmware LB1.9 and LB2.5 for monitors manufactured before December 2023, with applicability depending on the installed firmware version. This is not a general instruction to update every Lenovo monitor. Confirm the exact model and current firmware, and follow Lenovo’s model-specific update instructions before proceeding.
Lenovo says the firmware update may take up to 5 minutes. After installation, its instructions say to disconnect monitor power for 10 seconds and reconnect it. Read the complete P34w-20 USB-C support article before applying the update.

When to contact Lenovo Support
If the monitor still will not wake after checking power, input, cable connections, computer detection, and any setup-specific instructions above, consult the manual for the exact monitor model or contact Lenovo Support. Have the monitor and computer model numbers, connection type, operating system, and a description of when the screen goes blank ready. The symptom alone does not identify whether the cause is a setting, cable, dock, firmware, or hardware fault.
