To get a Valheim join code, start or join the multiplayer world or dedicated server, open the in-game pause menu, and copy the Join code shown there. Send that current code to your friend. They join through Join Game → Add server and paste it. For Xbox-and-PC or other mixed-platform sessions, the server must have crossplay enabled.
What a Valheim join code is
A join code is the connection credential for the active Valheim multiplayer session. The host copies it from the pause menu and gives it to the person joining. The recipient does not enter it as a world seed and does not need to recreate the host’s world locally.
Join codes are particularly useful when players are on different platforms. Iron Gate’s crossplay announcement explains that a code appears when one or more players use a different platform. A dedicated server also needs crossplay enabled before non-Steam players can connect with a code.
How the host finds the join code
- Start the multiplayer session. Load the multiplayer world, or connect to the dedicated server that your friends should use.
- Open the pause menu. Use your platform’s normal pause/menu control while you are inside the active session.
- Locate the Join code. The code is displayed in the pause screen when the session provides one.
- Copy the code exactly. Use the copy control if the game provides one, or reproduce every character precisely. Do not substitute the world seed.
- Send it to the joining player. Share the current code privately rather than posting it publicly.
The code belongs to the active session. If the server was stopped, restarted, or a new session was created, obtain the code currently displayed instead of relying on an older message.

How a friend joins with the code
- Open Valheim’s Join Game screen.
- Choose Add server.
- Paste the join code into the field provided.
- Confirm the entry and select the server or world that Valheim finds.
- Join after the connection succeeds.
This is the route specified in Valheim’s official Crossplay FAQ: the friend goes to Join Game, presses Add server, and pastes the code. If the code is rejected, ask the host for the code currently shown in the running session and repeat the process rather than editing the old code.
Joining across Xbox, PC and other platforms
When crossplay is required
Players using different platform families need a crossplay-enabled session. This is the relevant case for combinations such as Xbox and PC. The join code is intended to make that cross-platform connection possible when the server advertises crossplay.

Dedicated-server requirement
For a dedicated server, crossplay must be enabled when non-Steam players are connecting. Enabling it is a server configuration step; if it is off, a valid-looking code will not solve the platform mismatch. After changing the setting, make sure the server is running and copy the code from that active session.
Same-platform sessions
If everyone is using the same platform, you may be able to find the world through the normal server or friends list instead. A join code remains useful when Valheim displays one, but crossplay-specific requirements do not apply to a same-platform connection.

Dedicated server connection options
A dedicated Valheim server can be reached in more than one way. The code is convenient for the game client, but it is not the only route:
- Join code: The player opens Join Game → Add server and pastes the code generated by the running server.
- Public IP and port: The player connects using the server’s publicly reachable address and configured port.
- Server list: The player finds and selects the server from Valheim’s available server list when it is advertised there.
These alternatives are useful when a code is not displayed or when an administrator prefers direct address-based access. A dedicated crossplay server cannot be reached through a local IP address or a loopback IP address. For mixed-platform access, use the join code, the server’s public IP and port, or the server-list entry instead.

Host-run world versus dedicated server
Choose the hosting arrangement based on how your group plays. The important differences are whether the world is available when the host is away, whether crossplay is configured, which connection methods are available, and how much setup is required.

If the group only plays when one person is present, a host-run world is usually the simpler arrangement. If players need a persistent world while the usual host is offline, use a dedicated server and plan its crossplay and network settings before inviting players.

Troubleshooting a missing or rejected code
No Join code appears
- Confirm that you are inside the intended multiplayer world or connected to the intended dedicated server, not at the main menu.
- Check that the server is actually running. A stopped server cannot generate a usable credential for a joining player.
- If the group uses different platforms, verify that crossplay is enabled. On a dedicated server, this setting is required for non-Steam connections.
- Leave and reconnect to the active session if the server was just started or its configuration was changed, then check the pause menu again.
The friend cannot add the code
- Have the friend use the exact path Join Game → Add server; entering the code in an unrelated search or password field will not work.
- Copy the current code again from the host’s pause menu. Do not rely on a code copied from an earlier session.
- Paste without adding comments or replacing characters. A join code is not interchangeable with a world seed, server name, local IP, or public IP.
- Make sure the server remains online while the friend attempts to connect.
Xbox and PC still cannot connect
- Confirm that the server is crossplay-enabled, especially if it is a dedicated server and the PC player is using a non-Steam route.
- Check that both players are using the same current server session and that the host has shared its newly displayed code.
- If the dedicated server is crossplay-enabled but the code route fails, try the server’s public IP and configured port or select it from the server list.
A local address was supplied
A local-network address or loopback address is not a valid connection route for a crossplay dedicated server. Replace it with the join code, a publicly reachable IP and port, or the server-list entry. This restriction applies even when the server works for a player on the same local network.
Join code versus world seed
These values serve different purposes:
- Join code: A credential for connecting to the currently active multiplayer world or server.
- World seed: A value associated with world generation, not the connection method described by Valheim’s multiplayer instructions.
When inviting someone, send the Join code displayed in the pause menu. Sending only the seed will not give the recipient a way to enter the active session.
