Use your operating system’s region-capture tool, not a Chrome-only shortcut. On Windows 10 or 11, press Windows + Shift + S and drag a rectangle in Snipping Tool. On macOS, press Shift-Command-4 and drag over the visible Chrome area. On a Chromebook, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, choose partial capture, and select the region. These methods capture visible screen pixels. They do not automatically create a scrolling, full-page image of content below the viewport. PNG or JPG is a separate file-format decision: macOS documents PNG output, while Windows and ChromeOS documentation does not promise a universal PNG/JPG choice, so export the saved image in an editor when necessary.
First decide what you are capturing
“Part of a Chrome window” can mean two different things:
- A screen region: the pixels currently visible, including tabs, the address bar, bookmarks, webpage content, or part of another window if your selection crosses it.
- A webpage region: content inside the page, potentially extending below the viewport. A normal region snip does not scroll or assemble a full-page image.
The instructions below cover visible screen regions. If you need an entire long page, use a workflow specifically designed for full-page capture; do not assume the operating-system rectangle tool will include content that is not on screen.
Windows 10 and Windows 11: capture a rectangular Chrome region
- Bring Chrome to the front and scroll or resize it so the required content is visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Windows opens the Snipping Tool overlay.
- Choose Rectangular snip, then drag around the exact area. Include tabs or the toolbar if they are part of the desired Chrome-window crop. Choose Window snip instead when you want the entire Chrome window.
- Release the mouse. The capture is copied to the Snipping Tool editor, and Windows normally shows a notification.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool editor, annotate if required, then use its save command. Confirm the file type in the Save As dialog.
Microsoft’s documentation lists rectangular, window, freeform, and full-screen modes for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The shortcut opens the capture overlay; it does not necessarily write a file directly to disk. If Save As does not offer the format you need, open the image in an editor and export it as PNG or JPEG.

Windows format check
- Look at the extension and, when available, the file-type selector in Save As.
- For a lossless image with crisp text, choose PNG.
- For a smaller photographic or web-upload file, choose JPEG/JPG and inspect the result for compression artifacts.
- If the editor offers only one format, save that file, then use an image editor’s Export or Save as command to create the other format.
macOS: capture part of the visible Chrome window
Fast rectangular selection
- Put the desired Chrome content on screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag over the region and release. macOS saves the capture according to your Screenshot settings.
Capture the whole Chrome window
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press Space to switch to window capture.
- Click the Chrome window. macOS captures the window as a single image.
Use Screenshot controls
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot. Select a window or portion of the screen, set a timer when you need to prepare a menu or hover state, choose whether the pointer or clicks appear, and select the save location. Apple’s guide explicitly says, “Screenshots are saved as .png files and screen recordings are saved as .mov files.”
If a JPG is required, open the PNG in Preview or another image editor and use File > Export, select JPEG, set the quality, and save a new file. This conversion is separate from the capture itself.

Chromebook: select a partial screen region
- Display the required Chrome content and close or move anything you do not want in the image.
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open ChromeOS Screen Capture. The Show windows key is the rectangle-with-lines key in the top row.
- Choose Partial screen, then drag the selection around the visible Chrome area. Choose Window when you need the entire browser window.
- Confirm the capture. Google says screenshots and recordings save to Downloads by default; Screen Capture settings let you choose another folder.
- Open the file from the Files app and inspect its extension. Convert it with an editor if the recipient specifically requires PNG or JPG.
Google’s guide documents partial-screen and window modes but does not establish a universal PNG/JPG selector. Treat the resulting file’s actual type as authoritative rather than changing only the filename extension.

PNG versus JPG: choose the format after capture

PNG and JPG are file-format outcomes, not different capture areas. Capture the correct pixels first, then export. Do not merely rename .png to .jpg; that changes the label without converting the encoded image.
Make the crop accurate and readable
Include only what the reader needs
Before invoking the shortcut, maximize or resize Chrome so the page is legible. Close notification bubbles, hover menus, permission prompts, and unrelated windows. If the browser toolbar is not part of the explanation, start the drag below it. If the address or tab is evidence you need to show, include it deliberately.

On high-DPI displays, a screenshot may contain more pixels than its displayed size. Check the image dimensions before placing it in documentation. Avoid enlarging a small crop, which makes text soft in both PNG and JPG.

Check privacy and state
Review the final image for passwords, session identifiers, personal names, internal URLs, notifications, and account numbers. A region selection can include pixels outside the webpage if the drag crosses the browser frame or another window.
When a region capture is not enough
A visible-region snip cannot reveal content below the current viewport, preserve interactive behavior, or guarantee a clean webpage-only rendering. For a long article, dashboard, or dynamically loaded page, first determine whether you need a scrolling capture, a PDF, or an automated image generated from a URL. Also remember that cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can obscure the content you intended to document.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
On Windows, check that the Windows key is enabled and try opening Snipping Tool from Start. On macOS, verify Screenshot permissions and try Shift-Command-5. On ChromeOS, use the launcher’s Screen Capture control if the Show windows key is unfamiliar.

Repeat the capture after scrolling to the required state. Drag from one corner to the opposite corner without releasing. Remember that a rectangle captures screen coordinates, not semantic webpage elements.
The output is blurry
Capture at the display’s native scale and avoid enlarging afterward. For documentation, PNG usually retains interface text better than heavily compressed JPEG.
I cannot find the saved file
Open the platform’s capture editor or notification. On Chromebook, check Downloads first; Google documents it as the default location. On macOS and Windows, inspect Screenshot or Snipping Tool’s configured save location.

The extension says JPG but software rejects it
Open the file and export it as JPEG/JPG in an image editor. Renaming an extension does not convert the underlying encoding.
A webpage section is hidden by a popup
Dismiss the popup before capturing, or use an automated workflow that can remove known consent banners and widgets. Never hide a notice when the purpose of the screenshot is to document that notice.
Quick checklist before sharing
- Is this a visible screen crop or a full-page webpage capture?
- Did you select the correct Chrome tab, window, and scroll position?
- Are browser chrome, cursor, and notifications included intentionally?
- Does the file’s actual encoding match the requested PNG or JPG format?
- Are private values and account details removed?
- Is the image large enough to read without enlargement?

Can I capture a Chrome region without installing an extension?
Yes. Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, and Chromebook Screen Capture are built into the operating systems and provide region or window modes.
Will these shortcuts capture content below the webpage’s viewport?
No. They capture visible screen pixels. A scrolling or full-page result requires a different workflow.
Is JPG the same as JPEG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format; the three-letter extension is common on many systems.
Can I include the browser tabs and address bar?
Yes. Start the rectangular selection high enough to include them, or use the operating system’s whole-window mode.
