Funding a game on Kickstarter means preparing an audience and a deliverable project before asking for pledges. Kickstarter uses all-or-nothing funding: if a campaign misses its goal, backers are not charged and the creator receives no money. Once it launches, the goal and deadline are locked, so the budget, rewards, schedule, and outreach plan need to be credible before the campaign goes live.
How Kickstarter funding works for a game
You set a funding goal and a deadline. If pledges reach the goal by the deadline, backers are charged and the project is funded; if they do not, no pledges are collected. Kickstarter describes this model as a way to make the goal a shared threshold for delivering what the creator promised. Its explanation is at Why Is Funding All-Or-Nothing?.
The goal and deadline cannot be changed after launch. Kickstarter staff wrote in 2024 that campaigns can run from one to 60 days and that 30 days tends to work best. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee or a game-specific finding; confirm the current campaign limits before setting a launch date.

Set the goal at the minimum amount needed to complete a defined, viable version of the game and fulfill the rewards you offer. It is not simply a promotional target: under all-or-nothing funding, the threshold is what the project must reach to proceed as promised. Kickstarter’s funding guidance recommends accounting for project and reward costs, creator reach, fees, taxes, and a contingency.

Build a complete budget
Estimate costs for the specific game, rewards, and jurisdictions involved. Include applicable items such as:
- Development labor, contractors, software, and services.
- Localization and accessibility work included in the campaign promise.
- Platform, certification, or other release costs, where applicable.
- Physical reward production, packaging, and shipping.
- Taxes, platform and payment fees, plus a modest risk buffer.
For successfully funded U.S. projects, Kickstarter’s current fee schedule lists a 5% platform fee and payment processing fees between 3% and 5%. No Kickstarter fees are charged when a project does not reach its goal. These figures are U.S.-specific; processing costs can depend on pledge characteristics, and fee schedules differ by country. Check the applicable schedule before budgeting: Kickstarter fees: United States. Confirm tax and other legal obligations for your own circumstances.
Estimate the goal against people you can plausibly reach, rather than assuming an unknown audience will close a funding gap. Kickstarter’s handbook says creators should consider their existing reach and notes that much support tends to come from their main networks. This is a planning assumption, not a promise about where every campaign’s backers will come from.

Treat stretch goals as new commitments
A stretch goal can add momentum, but it can also raise production costs and complexity. Kickstarter’s funding guidance suggests they are better suited to improving the original work than adding an entirely new project. Before announcing a game feature or reward upgrade, account for its development, testing, localization, manufacturing, and delivery implications in the plan.
Do you need a big audience before launch?
You do not need to claim a particular audience size to begin planning, but you should be able to identify people and communities you can reach and have a credible way to tell them about the campaign. Kickstarter recommends preparing outreach before launch and says existing networks often provide much of a project’s support. That does not guarantee those contacts will pledge; it makes audience development part of the funding plan rather than something to improvise after launch.
For a game developer, practical pre-launch work can include inviting relevant communities to try a prototype, collecting email signups from interested players with their consent, and assigning someone to own each outreach task. Show prospective backers enough of the game and its scope to understand what they would be helping fund.

What to prepare before launching
Kickstarter’s Pre-Launch Checklist recommends preparing an initial outreach and promotion plan, assigning task owners, reviewing the project page and reward tiers, checking links, and sharing a preview for feedback. Use that preparation to verify the campaign is understandable and deliverable, not merely polished.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Define the deliverable. State what version of the game the goal funds, what is included, and what is not.
- Check the budget and rewards. Validate development and fulfillment estimates, including fees, taxes, shipping, and contingency.
- Review the campaign page. Make the game, scope, reward tiers, risks, and schedule clear; test links and share a preview for feedback.
- Assign outreach work. Decide who will contact which communities and who will handle campaign updates and questions.
- Submit for review if needed. Kickstarter’s checklist recommends submitting at least two business days before the intended launch when review is needed.
Is a campaign video required?
No. Kickstarter’s help article says a project video is not required and says a notable video can improve a project’s prospects. The article provides no effect size, so treat this as platform guidance, not a quantified or guaranteed result. If you include a video, make it a clear demonstration of the game and its current state rather than a substitute for a specific plan and budget. The article is available in Japanese at Kickstarter’s project-video guidance.
Should you hire a Kickstarter marketing service?
Kickstarter does not endorse marketing or promotion services and says such services are unnecessary for most projects. If you consider hiring one, investigate the actual work, check the provider’s reputation, and ask other creators about their experience. Kickstarter warns against fake backers, misrepresented contributions, spam, and pressure to pay outside the platform. Its guidance is at marketing and promotion services.

Before paying a provider, ask what specific deliverables are included, whether your team can do the work itself, and whether past results can be verified directly with creators. Treat guaranteed backers or pressure to use questionable tactics as serious warning signs. A provider’s promotion cannot replace a viable funding goal or a community that understands the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you wait to launch?
Consider postponing until you can answer these questions with evidence and a workable plan:
- Have players shown meaningful interest in the game or prototype, and can you reach them again?
- Is the playable build and campaign page ready to explain the project’s scope?
- Can the goal cover a minimum viable release and every promised reward?
- Are physical rewards, shipping, and other fulfillment commitments manageable?
- Can the team handle outreach, backer questions, updates, and development while the campaign runs?
A launch date is not a substitute for those conditions. The campaign asks backers to support both a game and the creator’s ability to carry out the plan.

What happens if the campaign is funded but delivery is delayed?
A delay does not automatically mean a project is canceled, but creators are expected to be honest and transparent. Explain schedule uncertainty and relevant risks before launch. If the scope, timing, or fulfillment plan changes, communicate the change clearly on the project page and in updates, as Kickstarter advises in its all-or-nothing funding explanation. Give backers a useful account of what changed and how the team plans to proceed.
What Kickstarter funding figures can—and cannot—tell you
The platform’s 2024 duration guidance and current U.S. fee schedule can help with campaign planning, but they do not predict whether a particular game will succeed. No current primary, game-specific Kickstarter success rate or conversion benchmark for 2026 is established here. Avoid using a generic success percentage as a forecast for your campaign.
