If your personal information was exposed, you can place a free security freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to restrict prospective creditors’ access to your credit files. To freeze all three, you must contact each bureau separately. Then review your credit reports for unfamiliar activity; a freeze limits access but does not detect fraud or protect an existing account.

Choose the response that matches what was exposed

A breach notice does not always mean someone has used your information. Start with the organization’s notice: identify which data was exposed and follow any steps it recommends. If a Social Security number was exposed, the Federal Trade Commission advises considering a credit freeze and taking up any offered monitoring. For other exposed data, such as a password or account number, also secure the affected account; credit-file protections alone may not address that risk. See the FTC’s breach guidance.

Security freeze

A security freeze is free and restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, making it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. To freeze all three nationwide credit files, request a freeze from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion individually. The freeze remains until you lift or remove it. It does not close existing accounts or stop someone from misusing an account already open in your name.

Fraud alert

A fraud alert asks businesses to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. An initial alert is free and lasts one year. You can request it from one nationwide bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. If you are an identity theft victim, you may qualify for a seven-year extended alert, which requires identity theft documentation. An alert does not block access to your file or guarantee a lender will reject an application. The FTC explains the options in its bureau-contact guidance and Know Your Rights.

Report review and monitoring

Reviewing reports lets you inspect information yourself; monitoring services send alerts about changes. AnnualCreditReport.com says consumers can request free weekly reports online, by phone, or by mail. A report review requires you to notice and act on unfamiliar information. Paid monitoring is provider-dependent and is not a substitute for a freeze or recovery steps. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says most monitoring services alert after information has been stolen rather than prevent the theft; see its explanation of credit monitoring.

Compare your options

Option What it does How to set it up Duration or cadence Limitation
Security freeze Restricts prospective creditors’ access to a credit file. Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately to freeze all three files. Until you lift or remove it. You may need to lift it for a new credit application; it does not resolve misuse of an existing account.
Initial fraud alert Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. Contact one nationwide bureau; it must tell the other two. One year. Does not block access to the file or guarantee an application will be declined.
Extended fraud alert Provides a longer identity-verification alert for eligible identity theft victims. Contact a bureau and provide required identity theft documentation. Seven years. Eligibility and documentation requirements apply.
Free report review Lets you inspect the information in your reports. Request reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Free weekly reports, according to the official site. You must review the reports and respond to findings.
Paid credit monitoring Sends alerts about changes, depending on the service. Subscribe to a provider or accept a breach-related offer. Provider-dependent. Generally detects changes after they occur; most services do not prevent information from being stolen.

Place a freeze and lift it when needed

You must manage each bureau’s freeze separately. Use the bureau’s current website or phone process and be prepared to complete its identity checks. For the CFPB’s stated service time frames, a bureau must place a freeze within one business day after a telephone or secure electronic request, or within three business days after a mailed request. It must send written confirmation within five business days after placement. A free temporary lift requested online or by toll-free telephone is due within one hour; a mailed lift is due within three business days. These are CFPB guidance time frames, not a promise that every bureau’s user interface will be identical. Check the bureau’s current instructions. Details are in the CFPB’s page on security freezes.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp, 3-Pack for Mail
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.

A freeze can affect a new credit application because a prospective creditor typically needs access to your file. If you plan to apply, request a temporary lift for the period you specify, at each bureau whose file the creditor may check. You can reinstate the freeze afterward.

Check reports and act on unfamiliar activity

  1. Get reports from all three bureaus. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, which provides access to free weekly reports according to its official site.
  2. Look for unfamiliar accounts and inquiries. Check whether any account, application, or other information is not yours. A freeze does not erase or correct information already on a report.
  3. Contact the affected business. Ask its fraud department to secure or close a fraudulent account and provide written confirmation of the resolution. Change passwords and PINs for compromised accounts.
  4. Report identity theft. Use IdentityTheft.gov to create an Identity Theft Report and recovery plan, and keep copies of both.
  5. Dispute inaccurate report information. Follow the FTC recovery plan. If you meet the identity-theft requirements, you can request that identity-theft information be blocked from your report using the FTC’s sample letter to a credit bureau and the required proof of identity and Identity Theft Report.
  6. Keep checking for new activity. Review reports regularly and respond to unfamiliar accounts or changes.

The CFPB’s identity theft guidance also describes steps to take when you discover fraud.

What a freeze does—and does not—protect

A freeze is a barrier to new-credit applications that depend on access to your credit file; it is not a general lock on your identity. It does not prevent misuse of an existing bank, card, or other account, and it is not an alert system. Use the affected company’s fraud process for existing-account misuse, and review reports or use monitoring to help spot changes. As the FTC puts it, “A credit freeze, also called a security freeze, makes it less likely that an identity thief could open a new account in your name.” The statement appears in IdentityTheft.gov’s Know Your Rights guidance.
