You can free up internal storage on an Xbox Series S without uninstalling games by moving less-played installations to a USB external drive, or by adding an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive is best for keeping a game library archived; an Expansion Card is the better choice when you want compatible games to remain ready to play from added storage.
Choose how you want to use the extra storage
Xbox identifies USB external hard drives and Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards as ways to add storage. The right choice depends on whether you mainly want to keep games installed or play them directly from the added space.

Move games to a USB drive for an archive
A compatible USB drive lets you keep games installed without occupying the same space on the Series S internal drive. This is useful for a game you want to retain but do not need to launch immediately.

Confirm that the drive is formatted for that purpose before transferring games.
- Open the console’s storage or game-management interface, select an installed game, and choose the option to move it to the external drive. Xbox’s current support page does not provide readable step-by-step menu details here, so use the labels shown on your console rather than relying on a specific menu path.
- Check whether the game is optimized for Xbox Series X|S. If it is, do not assume it can launch from USB; it may need to be moved back to internal storage or an Expansion Card before play.
Moving and copying are different: moving transfers the installation and frees the space it used on the original drive. Copying leaves the original installation in place, so it does not free internal space.

Add an Expansion Card for games you want ready to play
If you want Series X|S games to stay playable from added storage, consider an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. Microsoft Store lists the card as matching internal storage performance, making it the direct-play alternative to a USB archive. Confirm the specific card’s capacity, compatibility, and local availability before purchasing; availability can vary by market.
Back up captures separately
Screenshots and game clips can be backed up to OneDrive or external storage, according to Xbox’s September 27, 2023 announcement. This can help preserve captures while managing what is stored on the console, but it does not move or preserve game installations.

What if storage is still full?
Xbox’s console overview also lists uninstalling inactive games as an option. That removes the installation, so it does not meet the goal of keeping every game installed; use it only if moving games or adding storage is not suitable. Xbox lists 512 GB and 1 TB internal-storage capacities across its console lineup, not as a guarantee of the exact usable space on every Series S configuration. See Xbox’s console overview.
