To free up space on a Mac, start with the built-in Storage view, review large files and category recommendations, and delete only what you no longer need. For large files you want to keep, move them to another storage device and verify the copies before removing the originals. There are no comparative cleanup test results or measured recovery figures established here; this is a practical guide based on Apple’s official guidance.
Find what is using storage
Apple’s Storage view shows how your Mac’s internal storage is being used and may offer recommendations or controls for particular categories. The categories that appear depend on the apps and files on your Mac.
- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Earlier macOS versions: Open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.
Start with categories that show review controls, then look for large files and Downloads. Apple’s guidance also recommends checking for unneeded apps, old iPhone or iPad backups, and media you can stream or download again. If other people use accounts on the Mac, review whether any accounts or leftover user data are no longer needed. Apple’s storage-management guide explains these options.
Choose what to delete and what to keep
Delete items you no longer need
Remove files and apps only after checking that you do not need them. You can review and remove downloads, unneeded applications, old device backups, and replaceable media. Deleting an item does not immediately release its storage if it remains in the Bin or Trash: empty it to make that space available. Apple explains how to empty the Bin.

Move wanted large files to external storage
If you want to keep large files but need room on the Mac, move them to another storage device. Apple specifically cites Photos and iMovie libraries as examples that can take substantial space. An external drive is one option, but choose one with enough capacity for the files you intend to move. After copying, open or otherwise verify the files on the external device before deleting the originals from the Mac. Apple’s guide to moving Photos and iMovie libraries covers these libraries.
Understand System Data before trying to remove it
System Data—called Other in some contexts—is a general category for items that do not fit a more specific category. Apple says it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, temporary files, fonts, app-support files, and plug-ins. Its size varies, and macOS manages its contents; you cannot manage those contents directly from the Storage category. Avoid treating it as a single folder to delete. Instead, manage personal files listed in other categories through Finder or the apps that created them. Apple describes what appears in the Storage view.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Also distinguish free space from available storage. Apple notes that available space can include purgeable caches, so the two figures do not necessarily mean the same thing.
Use optimization with the right expectations
macOS can optimize supported storage by making some files available on demand, including through iCloud, while keeping recent files or optimized versions on the Mac. This can reduce local storage use, but it relies on your iCloud storage plan; it does not provide unlimited free cloud space. Check that your plan and internet access suit how you use the files before relying on cloud availability. Apple’s storage-management guide describes optimization options.

macOS also clears certain caches and logs that are safe to remove when space is needed. Apple’s macOS user guide says: “When space is needed on your Mac, macOS also clears caches and logs that are safe to delete, including temporary database files, interrupted downloads, staged macOS and app updates, Safari website data and more.” This automatic cleanup is not a promise that every item categorized as System Data will disappear.

If you need temporary room to complete a task such as installing a macOS update, starting in safe mode may clear certain system caches that macOS can recreate as needed. Apple presents this as a temporary measure, not a durable substitute for reviewing files or moving wanted data. Apple’s safe-mode instructions explain how to start your Mac in safe mode.

What this guide can—and cannot—say about results
The supported actions are storage review, selective deletion, emptying the Bin or Trash, moving files to another device, and using macOS optimization where it fits. Their effect depends on which files are taking up space and what you choose to remove or move. Apple’s guidance cited here does not establish a guaranteed amount of space recovered, a time saved, or a ranking of cleanup utilities. No comparative hands-on cleanup results are available to report.
