Start with Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Storage to see what is taking up space. Then review Downloads, large media files and unused apps, deleting only items you recognize and no longer need. Back up anything important before removing its copy from the phone. Samsung does not specify one free-space requirement for every Galaxy model and update, so follow the amount, if any, shown by your phone.
Check what is using storage
Open Settings, tap Device care or Battery and device care, then tap Storage. Review the largest categories first and inspect their contents before removing anything. Depending on your model and software, Samsung’s storage tools may also help identify duplicate, large or unused files. Menu names and available controls vary by device and region. Samsung’s storage guidance describes these options.
Storage and memory are different. Storage is where apps and files live; Samsung’s memory cleanup stops background apps rather than removing stored files. To make room for an update, focus on storage categories, files and apps—not a memory-cleanup control. Samsung explains the distinction in its Device care guidance.

Review Downloads and saved media
Open My Files and check Downloads. Look for files you recognize and no longer need, such as duplicate downloads or old documents. Review large videos and saved media carefully; delete only files you are comfortable losing or have already backed up. Samsung’s My Files storage instructions describe selecting files and moving them to Trash.

Check Gallery Trash
Deleting a screenshot in Gallery may move it to Trash instead of removing it permanently. Samsung says to empty Gallery Trash to completely remove those deleted screenshots. Check Trash before assuming that a Gallery deletion has freed the space; permanently removing an item also removes the opportunity to restore it from Trash. Uninstall unused apps and review message cleanup
Remove apps you recognize and do not use
Uninstall apps you no longer need. Some preinstalled or system apps cannot be uninstalled, though a Disable option may be available. Avoid clearing app data as a routine space-saving shortcut: it can remove locally stored app information, and Samsung’s storage guidance instead focuses on chosen files and unused apps. Understand the optional old-message setting
Samsung documents an optional Messages setting that automatically deletes older messages once the phone reaches either 200 total messages or 20 multimedia messages. Those are the setting’s thresholds, not a guarantee of a particular amount of space saved. Review what the setting will remove before enabling it, especially if you keep old conversations or attachments. The setting may not be available on every model or software version. Samsung’s storage instructions describe automatic message deletion.
Back up files you want to keep
If photos, videos or documents matter to you, copy them somewhere safe before deleting their phone copies. Samsung describes using Smart Switch to back up those files to external storage, including a microSD card, USB flash drive or SSD. USB storage may require an OTG adapter. Check that your Galaxy supports the destination and connector, complete the backup, and verify that the files open from the destination before deleting the originals. Moving files to external storage is useful when you need to preserve them, but it does not guarantee a specific amount of space reclaimed; that depends on which files you move and the phone’s Trash behavior. You may not need to buy anything if selective deletion or removing unused apps provides enough room.
Retry the software update
After cleanup, return to Settings > Software update and retry the update. The exact menu labels can differ. Follow any storage instruction or space estimate shown on your phone: Samsung’s reviewed update guidance identifies insufficient storage as a possible reason an update can fail but does not give one free-space threshold that applies to every Galaxy phone and update. Try Smart Switch on a computer if the phone update fails
Samsung US documents a computer-based alternative when an update is available: install Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, connect the Galaxy phone, and follow the on-screen prompt. Keep the cable connected until the update finishes; Samsung warns not to disconnect during the update. This is an alternative route, not a guarantee that every update failure will be resolved. If the update still will not install
Do not jump straight to a factory reset to reclaim space. A reset or recovery step can erase stored data. Back up important files first, then follow Samsung’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance or contact Samsung support if the update continues to fail. Update availability and instructions can vary by model, software version, carrier and region. Samsung’s update guidance includes Smart Switch and cautions around data loss.
