To reclaim Samsung Galaxy phone storage after backing up photos, use Google Photos’ Free up space on this device option—but first confirm that the right Google Account has finished backing up the photos and videos you want to keep. The tool removes eligible local copies from the phone; the backed-up items remain in Google Photos and at photos.google.com.
1. Confirm your photos and videos are backed up
Before removing anything from the phone, check the Google Account and backup status in Google Photos. A backup to a different account than the one you expect can make files difficult to find later.

Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial. Check that the displayed account is the one where you want the library stored.

Open Photos settings → Backup and check the backup status. Wait for the items you intend to remove to finish backing up.

If you also need pictures from messaging apps, Downloads, screenshots, or other device folders, open Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders and check that the relevant folders are included.
Google recommends confirming backup before deleting device copies. Its guidance is available in Google Photos Help: Free up space on your device and Google Photos Help: Back up photos and videos.
2. Remove backed-up copies from the Galaxy phone

Tap Free up space on this device.

Review the amount Google Photos says it can free, then tap Free up [x] from device and confirm.
This deletes eligible backed-up photos and videos from the phone’s local storage. Google says items less than 30 days old may be left on the device; they can still be backed up in your Google Photos library. The amount freed may therefore differ from the total size of your photo library.
3. Know where the photos remain available
After removal, backed-up items remain in Google Photos and at photos.google.com, provided you sign in to the Google Account used for backup. The removed device copies may no longer appear in Samsung Gallery’s local albums, and you cannot access those deleted local copies through the built-in gallery or offline. You’ll need an internet connection to browse the cloud library.

Google Photos and Samsung Gallery are not interchangeable views of the same local files: removing a phone copy can change what appears in Gallery even though the backed-up item remains in Google Photos. Google describes the device-cleanup behavior in its Free up space on your device help page; Samsung Gallery behavior can vary with the phone and sync configuration.

Google Photos only clears eligible backed-up media. To find other local storage use, check the Galaxy’s Settings → Storage screen, then review downloads, unused apps, and other large files. Android menu labels and available features vary by software version and device.

Downloads and other files: Remove files you recognize and no longer need, or transfer files you want to keep to a computer.

Unused apps: Android guidance includes app archiving as an option on supported devices. Availability and steps may vary.

App cache: Clearing cache can remove temporary files. Prefer an app’s own cleanup options when available.

App storage: Do not confuse clearing storage with clearing cache. Clearing an app’s storage permanently deletes that app’s data, so use it only if you understand what will be lost.

Free up space on this device targets local copies and phone capacity. Google Photos’ Manage storage targets storage in your Google Account; it does not free space on the Galaxy itself. Use Manage storage when your cloud quota is the problem, not as a substitute for removing phone copies. Google’s Manage your Google Photos storage page explains the account-storage tools and categories, which can include large photos and videos.
Google says Original quality backups count toward Google Account storage regardless of when they were uploaded. Storage saver or Express uploads from before June 1, 2021 are excluded from account storage. These quota rules concern cloud storage, not how much phone space the device-copy cleanup can reclaim.
