To free up memory on a smart TV, start with the symptom. If the TV says storage is full, delete apps you no longer use. If one app is slow or freezes, clear that app’s cache. If the whole TV feels sluggish, restart it or perform a cold boot. Those three steps resolve most cases, and only the first one permanently frees storage space.
The phrase “free up memory” covers three different problems, and the fixes are not interchangeable. Storage (the space where apps and downloaded content are kept) is different from temporary working memory (RAM), and both are different from an app’s cached files. Menu names differ by brand, model year and software version, so the paths below are grouped by platform.
Identify which problem you have
Match the symptom to the likely cause before changing anything. Deleting an app will not fix a sluggish system, and a restart will not create storage space.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best first action | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Storage full” or cannot install an app | Persistent storage used by apps and content | Uninstall unused apps; consider USB expansion where supported | Uninstalling removes the app; reinstalling restores it but not its local data |
| One app is slow, glitching or stuck | App-specific cache or corrupted temporary files | Clear that app’s cache | Yes, cache is rebuilt automatically |
| Whole TV is slow or menus lag | Temporary working-memory pressure after long uptime | Restart, then cold boot if needed | Yes; nothing is deleted |
| App says “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app” or “Insufficient memory” | Low storage, or an internet connection problem | Check storage, then restart and test the network | Yes |
| Old TV cannot load modern websites or apps | Platform age and browser or web standard limits | Check the manufacturer’s compatibility notes | Not fixable by cleanup |
Restart the TV, or perform a cold boot
A restart closes running apps and clears temporary memory. It does not delete apps, accounts or downloads. Restarts are the least disruptive step, so try them before anything else.

Samsung
Samsung’s support material describes a cold boot as a cache-clearing step. With the TV on, press and hold the power button on the remote until the TV turns off and then back on. If you do not have the remote, unplug the TV for 30 seconds, reconnect it and turn it on. Samsung’s US guidance states that the cold boot clears memory cache.
Roku
Roku’s support page (updated 6 September 2026) describes a system restart as its least invasive reset. On a Roku TV, pressing the TV’s own power button does not restart the Roku system. Use Home, then Settings, then System, then Power, then System restart, if your model shows that menu. Otherwise, unplug the Roku device for at least 10 seconds and plug it back in.
LG, Sony and Android TV or Google TV
The LG, Sony and Google instructions reviewed for this guide do not give a separate restart path for memory, so use your TV’s power or restart option in its system menu and check the model’s manual. Restart first in any case.

Clear the cache or data of a single app
Use this step when one app misbehaves while the rest of the TV is fine. Clear the cache first. Clearing data is more drastic: it can sign you out, reset settings and remove information stored by the app, so you may need to set it up again.

Before buying a drive, confirm your TV’s support for USB storage in its manual or on the manufacturer’s site. Roku’s microSD expansion applies only to Roku devices with a microSD card slot.
When memory is not the cause
Some limits cannot be fixed by cleaning up. On older LG webOS TVs, LG states that sets made before webOS 3.5 (2017) may not support newer web standards because of program performance constraints. Memory-related messages can appear when large web pages exceed the TV’s memory. Older-than-2012 TVs may lack browser support for some websites for security reasons. In those cases, the answer is a different device or app, not a cleanup.
A “Not enough memory” or “Insufficient memory” message on Roku can also come from a weak or unstable connection. If you have plenty of free storage, check your network before assuming a memory fault.

- Note the exact message and whether it appears in one app, in the browser or across the whole TV.
- Restart the TV, or cold boot it on Samsung or unplug a Roku device for at least 10 seconds.
- If one app is affected, clear its cache. Clear its data only if the cache step fails, and expect to sign in again.
- Check storage and uninstall apps you no longer use.
- Install any pending TV software update and try again. Samsung recommends keeping software up to date for smooth operation.
- On an Android TV that needs more storage, consider USB expansion only after checking your model’s guidance, and back up the drive before formatting.
- If the message persists, check the connection, then contact the app maker or the TV maker’s support team with the model number.
- Avoid a factory reset as your first step. Samsung notes that a reset may not be necessary and describes Device Care diagnostics as a less disruptive option. Reset Smart Hub removes downloaded apps and stored accounts, so use it only as a last resort.
Menu paths and labels are model- and region-specific, and they can change with firmware. When a label on your TV does not match this guide, use your model number to find its current official manual.
