If your iPhone is low on space but you want to keep your pictures, first check whether iPhone storage or iCloud storage is full. If iCloud Photos is enabled and your iCloud account has room, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage to reduce the space used by local photo files while keeping full-resolution originals in iCloud. For an independent copy, export and verify your originals on a computer or external drive before deleting anything.
Check which storage is full
iPhone storage is the space on the device; iCloud storage is cloud capacity shared by services including Photos, backups, and iCloud Drive. Clearing one does not necessarily solve a shortage in the other.
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Check the Photos amount and any recommendations to see how much space the local library uses.
- Separately, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud and review iCloud usage and available capacity.
Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of storage; this is shared across iCloud services, not reserved just for photos. If iCloud is full, new photos may not upload and backups may stop. See Apple’s iCloud storage guidance.

Settings labels can differ by iOS version. Use the wording shown on your iPhone rather than assuming every device has the same menu layout.

Use Optimize iPhone Storage to reduce local photo use
This is the built-in option to try when the iPhone is short on space but you want to retain the originals in your iCloud Photos library. Apple says the device keeps space-saving versions while iCloud Photos stores photos and videos in their original, high-resolution versions. When more device space is needed, the iPhone can optimize items accessed least; it can download a full-resolution version when you need it. Apple explains how iCloud Photos works.
It requires iCloud Photos to be enabled and enough iCloud capacity for the library. It does not fix a full iCloud account, and you need an internet connection to retrieve originals that are not stored locally. Confirm that syncing has completed before relying on iCloud as the only preserved copy.

- If needed, enable iCloud Photos in the Photos settings under Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Depending on iOS, the option may be called Sync this iPhone or appear under Saved to iCloud.
- Choose Optimize iPhone Storage in the Photos storage options. On some iOS versions, the path or label may differ.
- Keep the iPhone connected to a network and allow time for upload and optimization. Apple notes that upload time depends on library size and connection speed; space may not be freed immediately.
Make an independent copy before deleting wanted photos
If you want a copy that does not depend on the synced iCloud Photos library, export unmodified originals to a computer or compatible external storage. Verify that the files are present and open correctly on the destination; for important photos, keep a second copy as well. Only then consider deleting them from Photos.

Review duplicates before merging
In Photos, open Utilities > Duplicates if that collection is available. Review the proposed matches before choosing Merge. Apple says merging retains the highest-quality version and relevant data, while the other copies move to Recently Deleted. Duplicate detection may take time, so the collection may not appear immediately. See Apple’s instructions for deleting photos.

With iCloud Photos enabled, deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it on other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. It is a synchronized-library deletion, not a command to remove only the phone’s copy. Apple’s iCloud storage article documents this behavior.

Deleted items generally remain in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days, but Apple says items may be removed immediately and unavailable for recovery when iCloud storage is exceeded. Do not treat Recently Deleted as a backup, and do not empty it until you have verified any separate copy you need.
