“Force a reset” can mean two different things on a Samsung Galaxy tablet: restarting a frozen device without erasing data, or performing a factory data reset that deletes personal information. If the tablet is merely frozen, try the force restart first. Use a factory reset only when you intend to erase the tablet or cannot access it normally.
Force restart or factory reset: which do you need?

Button combinations and menu labels vary by model and software version. Samsung’s recovery instructions are not a guarantee that one sequence applies to every Galaxy Tab.
How to force restart a frozen Galaxy tablet without erasing data
- Press and hold Power and Volume Down at the same time for more than seven seconds, until the tablet reboots. Samsung UK gives this procedure for a frozen Galaxy Tab.
- If that does not work, hold Power for up to two minutes to shut the tablet down. Leave it off for one minute, then press Power to turn it on.
- If the buttons still do not restart it, let the battery run out. Charge the tablet for 30 minutes, then try turning it on again.
If it remains unresponsive, Samsung recommends contacting a service centre or requesting a repair. If the tablet starts but freezes again, check for a problematic app, free storage, install available software updates, or try Safe Mode before considering a data-erasing reset. Before a factory reset: protect your data and check account access
- Back up anything you need. A factory reset deletes personal information, and Samsung warns it may not be recoverable.
- Decrypt an encrypted microSD card first. Samsung US warns that a card left encrypted may not be readable by the tablet after the reset.
- Make sure you can verify ownership. A reset performed outside Settings may trigger Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which can ask for the Google account previously registered on the tablet. Samsung says Android 9 and later may also allow verification with the previously configured screen lock.
- Know your Samsung account credentials. Samsung may request the account password to complete the reset. Its US instructions say a network connection is required to log out of a Samsung account before completing a reset.
These ownership checks are security measures, not obstacles to bypass. If you cannot verify the account during setup, contact Samsung support or a service centre. Samsung’s factory-reset guidance explains the data and account requirements.

Reset a Galaxy tablet from Settings when you can use the screen
Menu names can differ by Galaxy Tab model and software version. Samsung’s tablet-specific guide recommends searching Settings for the reset option:
- Open Settings.
- Search for Factory data reset, then select the matching result. On some models, the path is Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset.
- Review the information about what will be erased, then tap Reset.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Provide the requested screen-lock or account credentials if asked.
- Tap Delete all to confirm. When the reset finishes, the tablet returns to its initial setup screen.
Samsung Philippines states in its Galaxy tablet reset guide, last updated June 22, 2022: “Factory Resetting a mobile device is not reversible.”

Factory reset a locked Galaxy tablet with its buttons
Use this method only if the tablet is inaccessible and you intend to erase it. The button combination depends on whether the tablet has a physical Home button; check Samsung’s instructions for your exact model before proceeding.

- For a model with a physical Home button, press and hold Volume Up + Power + Home together. For a model without a Home button, press and hold Volume Up + Power.
- Release the buttons when the recovery menu appears.
- Use Volume Down to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power to select it.
- Highlight the confirmation option, such as Yes, and press Power.
After the wipe, the tablet may ask for the Google account previously registered on it or other ownership credentials before setup can continue. Samsung’s button-reset guide and locked-screen troubleshooting page provide additional model and account guidance.
