If your Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+ is frozen and unresponsive, press and hold the Power and Volume down keys together for more than 7 seconds. Samsung says this restarts the device; it is a force restart, not a factory reset, and it does not require choosing a reset option.
Force restart the Galaxy S8 or S8+
- Press and hold the Power key and Volume down key at the same time.
- Keep holding both keys for more than 7 seconds.
- Release the keys when the device restarts.
These are Samsung’s S8/S8+ instructions, from its support page last updated April 21, 2022. The page calls the button the Power key; the newer generic instructions for other Galaxy models may use different button names. No recovery menu or reset selection is part of this procedure. Force restart, normal restart, or factory reset?
Choose based on whether the screen responds and whether you intend to erase anything.

If the S8 does not restart
Check the charge
If the phone remains off or does not respond to the key combination, connect it to a charger and allow it to charge before trying again. Samsung’s general Galaxy power guidance identifies a drained battery as one possible cause and recommends a Samsung-certified charger when the battery may be fully discharged. Samsung’s S8-specific instruction is to hold the two keys for more than 7 seconds. If the phone still does not respond after a reasonable hold, Samsung’s broader US guidance says a forced reboot can take up to 60 seconds on some Galaxy devices; that longer timing is general guidance, not a revised S8-specific requirement. For recurring freezes, check software and storage
If the phone restarts but keeps freezing, Samsung’s S8/S8+ troubleshooting recommendations include using Device maintenance, freeing memory, checking for software updates, and testing the phone in Safe mode. These checks can help determine whether a recurring freeze is associated with available resources, software, or an app. If the problem continues despite those steps, Samsung advises contacting a Samsung Service Centre.

A replacement battery is not needed to force restart the phone.
