If one app is frozen, close only that app first: use the iPhone app switcher or Android’s Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Force stop. Reopen it. Restart the entire phone only when the app will not recover or the phone itself is frozen. The button sequence differs by iPhone model and Android manufacturer.

The key distinction is whether the app is stuck or the device is stuck. If you can still open the Home Screen, Settings, or other apps, use the app-level fix. If touch and buttons do not respond anywhere, skip the app switcher and restart the phone.

App close, force stop and phone restart are different

Closing an app removes its current screen from the app switcher. On Android, Force stop additionally terminates the app’s running processes. Restarting the phone reloads the operating system and every app, so it is a broader step.

Problem First action When to restart the phone Data risk
One app is visibly frozen but the phone responds Close that app on iPhone, or force stop it on Android Only if reopening does not help Normally none
The app crashes or will not open repeatedly Restart, then install app and system updates If the failure continues after closing Later clearing data or deleting the app can remove locally stored information
The whole phone is frozen Use the device’s force-restart button sequence Immediately; the app switcher may be inaccessible A forced restart normally does not erase apps or files

Apple’s guidance is explicit: “You should only close an app if it’s unresponsive.” Routine swiping of every open app does not improve battery life because iPhone manages background apps. See Apple’s app-closing instructions.

Do not confuse an app that is still visible with an app that is actively running. A preview in the app switcher is simply a way to return to a recent app. Closing every preview after every use is not a standard fix for battery life or performance. Target the app that is actually misbehaving.

How to close one unresponsive app on iPhone

iPhone X and later

  1. Start at the Home Screen. If the app is in front, you can still begin the gesture at the bottom edge.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom and pause in the middle of the screen. Do not release immediately; pausing opens the app switcher.
  3. Swipe left or right until you find the frozen app’s preview.
  4. Swipe up on that preview to close it.
  5. Return to the Home Screen or App Library and tap the app to reopen it.

If the app preview will not move and other gestures also fail, the phone may be frozen rather than just the app. Use the force-restart procedure below instead of repeatedly swiping.

iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier Home-button models

  1. Double-click the Home button to display recently used apps.
  2. Swipe sideways to locate the unresponsive app.
  3. Swipe up on its preview to close it.
  4. Open the app again from the Home Screen or App Library.

The app-switcher method is an app-level action. It does not restart iOS, sign you out, or clear the app’s documents. If the same app continues to stop responding, follow Apple’s escalation order rather than repeatedly force-closing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the app was editing a document, composing a message, or processing a transaction, closing it can discard work that had not been saved. After reopening, check whether the app restored a draft or pending action before trying the operation again.

How to force-restart a frozen iPhone

Use this when the screen will not respond or the iPhone cannot be turned off normally. It restarts the whole device; it is not the same as closing an app.

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up.
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down.
  3. Press and hold the Side button.
  4. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release the Side button.

Apple’s current guide shows this sequence for the iPhone models covered there: Force restart iPhone. The instruction includes, “When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.” Older iPhones with different buttons may use a model-specific sequence, so check Apple’s relevant support page if these controls do not match your phone.

A force restart can take longer than a normal shutdown. Keep holding the Side button through a blank screen; releasing it too early may leave the phone unchanged. This procedure is intended to restart the device, not erase apps, photos, or files, although unsaved text or edits may be lost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once the phone starts, unlock it and wait for the Home Screen to finish loading before immediately reopening the problem app. If the phone is hot, unusually slow, or showing low-storage warnings, address those conditions as part of the follow-up steps.

How to force stop one unresponsive app on Android

Android’s labels vary among manufacturers and Android versions. Google’s general path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps. Some phones call this Apps & notifications or App management.
  3. Tap See all apps, App info, or the equivalent list option.
  4. Select the affected app.
  5. Tap Force stop.
  6. Confirm with OK if Android asks.
  7. Return to the Home Screen and open the app again.

Google documents the general route in Fix an installed Android app that isn’t working and Fix an Android device that freezes or won’t respond. A manufacturer may put the same control under Settings > Apps > [app] > App info, behind a three-dot menu, or under a battery-management screen. Search Settings for “Force stop” or “App info” if the listed labels differ.

Force stopping is targeted: it ends the selected app but does not restart Android or close every other app. It may discard unsaved work that existed only in the app’s current session, so use it when the app is genuinely stuck, not as routine maintenance. Android may also show a warning that force stopping can make the app misbehave; that warning refers to stopping its current processes, not to deleting the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the app is playing audio, navigating, uploading, or using an active call, force stopping ends that activity. After reopening, verify whether the upload, navigation route, or other task needs to be started again.

How to restart a frozen Android phone

If the screen is frozen and you cannot reach Settings, use the physical controls. Google’s general Android guidance says to hold the Power button for about 60 seconds to restart. The exact behavior is not universal: some manufacturers use a shorter hold, a Power-plus-Volume combination, or a different recovery sequence.

  1. Hold the Power button continuously for about 60 seconds.
  2. Release it when the phone restarts or the manufacturer logo appears.
  3. If nothing happens, consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions for that model rather than trying random button combinations.

Google notes that its instructions describe a particular Android version and directs users to their manufacturer when the steps do not work. The device-level guidance is at Google’s frozen-device troubleshooting page.

A forced restart should not erase installed apps or personal files. It can, however, lose unsaved text or edits that were open when the phone stopped responding. If the phone restarts repeatedly, freezes before the Home Screen appears, or becomes unresponsive in multiple apps, stop treating the issue as a single-app problem and follow the manufacturer’s device troubleshooting instructions.

  1. Restart the iPhone. Use a normal shutdown and startup if the screen responds; use the force-restart sequence above if it does not.
  2. Update the app. Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and install any available update for the affected app.
  3. Update iOS. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an offered update when the phone is backed up, charged, and connected to Wi-Fi.
  4. Delete and redownload the app only after checking its data. Apple warns that deletion can remove data stored inside the app. Confirm that documents, game progress, messages, or other information are synchronized or backed up before deleting.
  5. Contact the app developer if the app remains broken while the rest of the phone works.

Apple’s full sequence and data warning are in If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open. Do not treat reinstalling as a harmless first step: an app can store information locally even when the phone itself is backed up.

Before deleting, identify what the app stores locally. Offline downloads, unsent drafts, locally imported files, and game progress may not return after a redownload unless the app synchronizes them to an account. If you cannot verify that backup, continue with updates and developer support instead of deleting.

What to do when an Android app still fails

Google’s troubleshooting sequence starts with the least destructive actions and then moves toward app data and installation changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Restart the phone. A normal restart is sufficient if the phone responds; use the frozen-phone procedure if it does not.
  2. Install app updates. In Google Play, open your profile menu, choose Manage apps & device, and install the affected app’s update if one is available. Other Android app stores may use different labels.
  3. Install system updates. The path varies, but it is commonly Settings > System > Software update or Settings > Software update.
  4. Force stop the affected app from its App info screen, then reopen it.
  5. Clear the cache if the app still misbehaves. On many phones this is Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage & cache > Clear cache; the label can differ.
  6. Check synchronization or backup before clearing storage/data. Clear storage, Clear data, or Clear app data can sign you out and remove information saved only on the phone.
  7. Uninstall and reinstall only after confirming backups. Removing the app can erase local files or progress.
  8. Contact the developer when one app remains broken but other apps work normally.

Google’s general troubleshooting instructions are in Fix an installed Android app that isn’t working. Because Android settings differ by device, do not assume that a menu path from another phone is identical to yours.

Clear cache and clear data are not interchangeable. Cache removal is the less destructive option and is intended to remove temporary files. Clearing storage or data resets the app’s local state, which can remove downloaded content and account sessions. Read the confirmation screen carefully and make sure you know which command you selected.

Check free storage before treating repeated freezes as an app-only problem

Google publishes this warning: “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” That is a troubleshooting threshold, not proof that low storage caused a particular freeze. If storage is nearly full, review large videos, downloads, offline maps, and unused apps, then retry the update or app.

On Android, storage details are commonly under Settings > Storage; the exact menu name varies. Freeing space does not replace force-stopping a currently frozen app, but it can remove a system condition that prevents updates or normal app operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low storage can also block an app or operating-system update, leaving a known bug unfixed. Check the available-space figure before starting a large update, and avoid deleting an app’s data merely to reclaim space unless its backup status is clear.

One app fails after updates and reinstall Contact that app’s developer Provide the phone model, operating-system version, app version, and exact symptom

This decision path prevents an unnecessarily disruptive restart. It also separates a temporary app hang from a device-wide failure: if Settings, the Home Screen, and several unrelated apps work, focus on the affected app; if everything is unresponsive, use the phone-level procedure.

Common mistakes that make the problem harder

  • Closing every app routinely: this adds work without improving iPhone battery life and can slow the process of reopening apps.
  • Restarting the phone for every minor app glitch: close or force stop the single affected app first when the rest of the phone responds.
  • Clearing data before checking backups: this can remove offline information, saved sessions, downloads, or game progress.
  • Assuming Android menus are identical: manufacturer skins rename and relocate Apps, Storage, updates, and restart controls.
  • Releasing a force-restart button sequence too soon: continue until the Apple logo or Android restart appears, while following the model’s documented procedure.
  • Blaming storage without checking: the 10% figure is Google’s published warning threshold, not a diagnosis of an individual crash.
  • Repeating a failed action without recording the symptom: note whether the app crashes on launch, freezes after a particular tap, or fails only while offline. That distinction helps support identify the cause.

When closing the app is not enough

An app that freezes once may recover after a close and reopen. Repeated failures after current updates point toward an app defect, corrupted local data, an account or network problem, or a broader operating-system issue. If every app is affected, prioritize phone-level updates, available storage, and manufacturer support rather than repeatedly reinstalling one app.

Before contacting support, record the app name and version, phone model, operating-system version, what action triggers the freeze, whether other apps respond, and whether the problem began after an update. This information helps the developer or manufacturer distinguish an app-specific failure from a device-wide one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one app fails, its developer is usually the appropriate next contact after the platform steps. If the phone cannot stay on, freezes across multiple apps, or does not respond to the documented restart controls, contact the phone manufacturer. Describe exactly which buttons you pressed, what appeared on screen, and whether any unsaved work was involved.

Frequently asked questions

How do I force close an unresponsive app?

On iPhone, open the app switcher and swipe the affected preview upward. On Android, open Settings > Apps > See all apps, select the app, tap Force stop, confirm, and reopen it.

Should I close every app on my phone?

No. Close or force stop the app that is genuinely unresponsive. Apple says routine app quitting does not improve battery life because iPhone manages background apps.

What if the iPhone app switcher will not open?

If other touch controls also fail, treat the phone as frozen and force-restart it: quickly press Volume Up, quickly press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

How do I force stop an app when Android menus look different?

Will force stopping or force restarting delete my data?

Those actions normally do not erase installed apps or personal files, but they can lose unsaved work in the active session. Clearing app data or deleting an app is different and can remove locally stored information.

Should I clear cache or clear data first on Android?

If available, try clearing cache first. Clearing storage or data can sign you out and remove downloads, drafts, or other information saved only on the device, so check synchronization and backups first.

Why does Google mention 10% free storage?

Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. That is a published troubleshooting warning, not proof that low storage caused a particular app freeze.

When should I contact the app developer?

Contact the developer when one app remains broken after closing or force stopping, restarting, and installing available updates. Include the app version, phone model, operating-system version, trigger for the freeze, and whether other apps work.
