To follow an MLB replay review, keep track of four things: the call on the field, the exact call being reviewed, the replay ruling, and any announced change to the runners or bases. The replay official may change the call, confirm it, or let it stand. “Let stand” means the evidence did not meet the threshold to change the call—not that replay proved the original call correct.

What happens during an MLB replay review?

A review begins when a manager challenges an eligible call or the crew chief initiates a review. Replay officials at MLB’s Replay Command Center examine the call or calls accepted for review. The crew chief announces that the play is under review, then announces the ruling and any runner-placement changes. MLB’s replay review rules glossary and replay rules explanation describe the process.

A challenge covers identified calls, not automatically the whole play

The manager must identify the call or calls being challenged. The replay official’s authority is limited to those challenged calls, or to a call the crew chief accepts for review. This matters when a single play involves multiple events: a ruling on one tag, touch, or other reviewable call does not necessarily settle every other part of the play.

Challenge counts and timing

Under MLB’s stated rules, a team begins a standard game with one manager’s challenge; teams begin All-Star and postseason games with two. A successful challenge is retained. MLB’s glossary says the manager signals immediately after the call, then has 15 seconds once the umpire is alerted to decide whether to challenge. Challenge rules can be season-specific, so consult MLB’s current rules for the season you are watching.

What do “overturned,” “confirmed,” and “let stand” mean?

Announcement Meaning What to watch next
Overturned or changed The replay official changes the call on the field. Listen for the crew chief’s explanation of how runners and bases are placed. MLB says the replay official uses discretion to put the teams in the position they would have occupied had the correct call originally been made.
Confirmed or upheld The original call is supported by the replay decision. Keep the original call and resulting game state in place, subject to any separate announced adjustment.
Let stand There is not clear and convincing evidence to change the call. The original call remains in effect. This wording describes the evidence threshold; it does not say replay conclusively proved the call correct.

MLB says the decision to uphold or change a reviewable call is final and is not subject to further review or revision. The ruling applies to the specific call or calls accepted for review.

How to follow the result while watching

  1. Remember the call on the field. Note the initial safe/out or other ruling before the review begins.
  2. Identify what is being reviewed. Listen for the crew chief’s announcement and distinguish the challenged call from other events in the play.
  3. Listen for the ruling. Separate a changed call from a confirmed call or one that is allowed to stand.
  4. Check the game state. Watch where the runners are placed and whether a base, run, or out is added or removed after the announcement.

MLB’s glossary says replay decisions are expected within a two-minute period, with some exceptions permitted; that is not a guaranteed maximum. In a March 27, 2023 explanation, MLB reported that reviews in the 2022 season averaged 1 minute, 31 seconds from the team challenge to the announced verdict. That is historical timing data, not a current promise.

Is an ABS ball-strike challenge the same process?

No. MLB announced on September 23, 2025, that the ABS Challenge System would be used in Major League games beginning in 2026. Under that system, a pitcher, catcher, or batter can challenge a ball-or-strike call. It is distinct from a manager’s challenge of another reviewable play, such as a tag at a base. When a broadcast shows a challenge, first identify whether the disputed event is a pitch call or a play on the field. See MLB’s ABS Challenge System announcement for the 2026 introduction.
