To read a golf leaderboard, separate a player’s position from their score: the position shows rank, the score usually shows strokes relative to par, and “Thru” shows how many holes they have completed in the current round. Check those fields together, because players may be at different points in a round.

What the main leaderboard columns mean

A PGA TOUR leaderboard example separates position, cumulative score, progress through the round, current-round score, round-by-round scores, and total strokes. Labels differ among websites and broadcasts, so read the column headings on the board in front of you.

Field What it tells you
Position The player’s current rank. A “T” before the number means tied; T2 means tied for second.
Total The cumulative score relative to par for the tournament, as shown on this PGA TOUR board.
Thru How many holes the player has completed in the current round. “F” means the player has finished the round.
Round The player’s score relative to par for the current round.
R1–R4 The player’s stroke totals for each round.
Strokes The aggregate number of strokes taken.

These labels and distinctions appear on the PGA TOUR 2026 PGA Championship leaderboard. PGA TOUR broadcast graphics may instead use “TOTAL,” “THRU,” and “TODAY”; scorecard-style graphics can also show marks for individual holes. The graphics reference describes those broadcast conventions, not a layout guaranteed across all apps and sites: PGA TOUR World Feed Graphics Package Styleguide Assets.

How to read scores relative to par

A score-to-par figure compares a player’s strokes with the course’s par. A minus sign means under par, a plus sign means over par, and E means even with par. For example, -6 means six strokes under par in the column where that figure appears.

Pay attention to whether a figure is the tournament total or the current-round score. A player could be E for the round but -6 overall: the round figure covers only today’s play, while the total includes earlier rounds. As a simple illustration, a player at -2 today and -8 overall has scored two under par in the current round and eight under par cumulatively; those figures are not from a particular event.

Position is separate from score. If two players are both listed T2 at -6, they share second place and have the same score-to-par total on that board. The tie marker does not add to or change their score.

How to follow players during a round

Use “Thru” to judge how much of the current round each player has played. A player marked Thru 12 has completed 12 holes; a player marked Thru 9 has completed three fewer. Their totals are snapshots at different points in the round, so the player currently ranked higher is not necessarily finished or guaranteed to remain ahead.

  1. Check Total to see each player’s cumulative score relative to par.
  2. Check Thru to see how many holes each has completed in the current round, or whether the player is marked F.
  3. Check Round or Today to isolate performance in the current round.
  4. Use R1–R4 or the scorecard when you want to see the round-by-round or hole-by-hole detail behind the total.

This comparison is especially useful when a leaderboard is live: a player with fewer holes completed has more of the round left to play, and the displayed order can change.

How the scorecard connects to the leaderboard

A scorecard records the strokes taken on each hole. The sum of those strokes is a raw stroke total; the score relative to par expresses that total against the course’s par. A leaderboard typically presents a summary, while a player’s scorecard can show the individual holes that produced it.

PGA TOUR’s 2025 Sentry scorecard, citing stroke-play Rule 3.3b, says: “After each hole during the round, the marker should confirm with the player the number of strokes on that hole and enter that gross score on the scorecard.” See the official scorecard. A pencil is useful only if you want to keep your own paper notes; it is not needed to understand a digital leaderboard.

What CUT means

“CUT” indicates that a player has not qualified to continue under that event’s cut rules. The number of players who advance and the qualification formula depend on the event. A CUT label on one PGA TOUR leaderboard illustrates the status, but does not establish a universal cutoff. For a specific tournament, consult its official competition regulations.

Why team-event scores can work differently

Do not assume an individual leaderboard’s scoring presentation applies to a team event. The International Golf Federation’s 2025 World Amateur Team Championship Manual describes team standing to par through holes completed and notes that a team total can change when a player’s score changes; the team score is not official until the round ends. That is a specific team-event format, not a rule for individual leaderboards.
