To flash an ASRock Rack motherboard BIOS, first identify the exact board model and current BIOS version, then follow that model’s official instructions. For boards that support local Instant Flash, ASRock Rack’s general procedure is to put the extracted BIOS files on a supported device such as a FAT32 USB drive, enter setup during startup, and run Advanced > Instant Flash. Remote procedures differ by BMC generation and management interface. Do not power off during a flash.

Before you start: identify the board and firmware

Find the motherboard’s exact model and revision, and record its current BIOS version. Use the model’s official ASRock Rack support page and manual to select the BIOS package and check release notes, prerequisites, and any model-specific instructions. A general procedure cannot establish the correct image or update sequence for every board.

Confirm that the file is for the BIOS, not the BMC. BIOS and BMC firmware are separate update targets with different images and procedures; use the instructions for the component you intend to update.

Choose an update route supported by your board

Route What it requires Scope
Local Instant Flash Local access to BIOS setup and a supported storage device containing the BIOS files ASRock Rack’s general FAQ describes this local method; confirm it applies to your model. ASRock Rack BIOS FAQ
IPMI web interface A supported server motherboard and BMC generation The FAQ documents a remote BIOS update route for AST2500/AST2600 systems. ASRock Rack BIOS FAQ
Server Management Utility A supported management utility and AST2500 BMC The documented procedure is for AST2500 boards, not every ASRock Rack system. ASRock Rack BIOS FAQ
OpenBMC An OpenBMC management interface and the intended firmware image Use the separate OpenBMC firmware workflow and verify whether the target is BIOS or BMC. ASRock Rack OpenBMC FAQ

These routes are not interchangeable, and the available documentation does not establish that one is universally faster or safer than another. Use the route specified for your board and management controller.

Flash locally with Instant Flash

  1. Prepare the media. Download the BIOS package for the exact motherboard from its official support page and extract its files. ASRock Rack’s FAQ lists FAT32 USB storage, FAT32 hard disk, and floppy storage as examples of supported media.
  2. Open BIOS setup. Start or restart the system and press F2 during POST. The FAQ also describes pressing F6 where the corresponding prompt or entry route is available.
  3. Run the utility. In setup, open Advanced > Instant Flash. Let the utility detect devices and list BIOS versions it considers suitable for the motherboard, then select the intended image. This detection is not a substitute for downloading the package for the exact board.
  4. Wait for completion. Follow the on-screen prompts and do not power off while the update is running. Wait for the completion message and reboot when prompted.
  5. Verify and restore settings. Re-enter setup and check the BIOS version. ASRock Rack instructs users to load default settings and save. Review any custom boot, storage, virtualization, or security settings afterward, because defaults may change configuration you rely on.

Remote update procedures

IPMI web UI for supported AST2500/AST2600 systems

ASRock Rack’s FAQ documents this route for server motherboards with AST2500 or AST2600 BMCs. In the IPMI web interface, open Maintenance > BIOS Update, provide the BIOS firmware file, and follow the verification and proceed prompts. Wait for completion; the FAQ recommends clearing browser cookies afterward. Follow the board’s current instructions if its interface or prompts differ.

Server Management Utility for supported AST2500 boards

The documented utility procedure lets an administrator select hosts, import the BIOS image, start the update, and monitor the process through upload, upgrading, and idle stages. Use it only where the board and BMC support this procedure, and follow the utility’s documentation for the installed version.

OpenBMC

ASRock Rack’s OpenBMC FAQ describes opening Operations > Firmware, selecting the firmware file, waiting for the update to finish, refreshing the page, and restarting. Confirm the selected file targets BIOS rather than BMC; the two firmware components must not be confused.

An ASRock Rack IPMI user manual also describes separate BMC Firmware Update and BIOS Update pages, with BIOS controls for preserving configuration and immediately shutting down the server to flash. That manual is an older interface reference, so use current model-specific instructions for the actual procedure.

If the update fails or the system will not boot

ASRock Rack warns that an incomplete BIOS flash can leave a system unable to boot and may require service. Its FAQ suggests repeating the process or trying the original BIOS file when an update problem occurs, but that advice is not a universal recovery sequence. If the machine is already unresponsive, do not improvise: consult the board-specific instructions or contact ASRock Rack support.

Do not interrupt a flash to troubleshoot a stalled-looking screen. The consulted guidance does not establish a universal update duration, rollback guarantee, or recovery procedure across board models.
