Smart Switch can install an update Samsung offers for your device and, in some failed-update cases, provide emergency recovery. Back up first: recovery or a factory reset can erase your data. Odin is a separate, model-specific manual route; Samsung’s public support guidance does not provide a universal Odin procedure.
Choose the right route before changing your phone’s software
People use “flashing” to mean different things: installing an ordinary update, recovering software after an interrupted update, reinstalling firmware manually, or replacing Samsung software with an unofficial build. Those tasks do not carry the same risks. Samsung documents over-the-air updates, Smart Switch updates and some emergency recovery steps. It does not publish a one-size-fits-all Odin walkthrough in the support guidance described here.

Try Samsung’s supported update options first
Check for an update on the Galaxy phone
Use the phone’s software-update check to see whether Samsung offers an update for that device. The exact menu wording and location can vary by model, carrier, region and software version. Updates may be delivered over Wi-Fi or mobile data; release timing and eligibility can affect whether an update appears.
Install an offered update with Smart Switch
- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB data cable and allow Smart Switch to detect it.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, select Update and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone while the update is running. The phone may restart during the process.
If Smart Switch does not detect the phone or the update connection fails, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another compatible cable, USB port or computer. A cable supplied with the phone may already work if it supports data, not just charging.

Recover from a failed update carefully
If an update fails, first check the available storage and network connection, then retry where appropriate. Samsung also documents using Smart Switch in some cases, including emergency recovery after an interrupted update leaves a device operating abnormally. Follow the recovery options shown by Smart Switch for the connected device; the available steps depend on the situation.
Back up important data before starting recovery or any factory reset. Samsung warns that emergency recovery involving a factory data reset erases data and that it is not responsible for data loss. If the phone cannot be backed up because it will not start, assume that data may be at risk rather than treating recovery as data-safe.

What Odin flashing can—and cannot—be treated as
Odin is associated with manual Samsung firmware installation, but Samsung’s public support pages described here cover OTA updates, Smart Switch updating and recovery, and service escalation—not a general Odin walkthrough. That means there is no universal set of firmware-selection or flashing steps established by those sources for every Galaxy phone.
Manual work depends on the exact Galaxy model and variant, carrier or regional version, firmware package and current software state. A package that is wrong for the device can cause serious problems. Before proceeding, verify compatibility against reliable documentation for the exact model; do not assume that a guide for a similarly named Galaxy applies to yours. This article does not provide an Odin procedure or claim that manual flashing is Samsung-endorsed.

Installing official firmware and installing modified or otherwise unofficial software are also distinct choices. Do not assume that every action called “flashing” triggers Knox. Samsung Knox Documentation says its warranty bit detects an unofficial software state, such as a non-Knox kernel. Samsung describes the bit as one-time programmable: it can change from 0x0 to 0x1. If tripped, a new Knox Workspace cannot be created, data in an existing Workspace cannot be retrieved, and Knox-dependent services including Samsung Pay and Secure Folder may stop working. Protect personal data before repair
Samsung Maintenance mode can hide personal information—including photos, videos, contacts and messages—from someone handling a device for repair. Samsung says it is available on devices running One UI 5 or higher, with settings varying by carrier and software version. Maintenance mode is a privacy measure, not a substitute for a backup: Samsung recommends backing up because repair may require a reset or storage replacement.

Samsung US describes a temporary cloud backup through Maintenance mode that is retained for 30 days and cannot include files larger than 100 GB. Samsung does not state a page publication date for those limits here. Check current device and account eligibility before relying on this option.

A Galaxy phone that will not start or remains in a boot loop may have a software or hardware problem. Samsung recommends supported troubleshooting and professional inspection or service in appropriate cases; it also says service may be required if the phone does not boot normally after a failed update. Repeating manual flashing is not a reliable way to rule out or repair a hardware fault.
