A Windows update can coincide with a slow or unstable PC without being the only cause. Protect your files, record what failed, run the built-in troubleshooter, check storage and startup load, then repair Windows components or roll back a clearly suspect update. Use Windows Recovery Environment or Reset this PC only after you understand the effect on apps, settings, and data.

First, establish what actually failed

Do not assume that a slowdown beginning after an update proves the update caused it. Microsoft lists low free storage, too many startup programs, outdated software or drivers, malware, and aging hardware as independent causes of poor performance. Several can occur together. Your first job is to separate an update installation failure from a general performance problem.

Record the symptoms

  • Write down the update error code and, if shown, its KB identifier.
  • Check whether the update downloaded, installed partially, or failed during a restart.
  • Note the date and time the slowdown, crashes, freezes, missing files, or boot failures began.
  • Record whether Windows starts normally, starts only in Safe Mode, or does not start at all.
  • Describe whether the problem is constant or appears only while Windows Update is checking, downloading, or restarting.

Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history in Windows 10) and record the relevant installation date. This timeline is useful when deciding whether a single update is a credible cause.

Back up before repair or recovery

Copy important documents, photos, browser data, and other irreplaceable files to a separate drive or trusted cloud location before running repair or recovery tools. Microsoft recommends a backup before Windows Update troubleshooting. A later Reset this PC operation can remove apps, settings, and, depending on the option selected, personal files.

Run the low-risk checks first

These checks address common update failures without changing installed Windows components. Restart once after completing the troubleshooter, then check for updates again.

Use the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Windows 11: Open the Get Help app and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter. If your release still exposes the Settings route, use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
  2. Windows 10: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Apply any repair the tool reports, restart the computer, and select Check for updates.

Labels can differ by Windows release, installed servicing updates, and whether an organization manages the device. If a work or school policy removes an option, do not treat its absence as proof that Windows is damaged.

Check the conditions an update needs

  • Free space: In Microsoft’s guidance for particular insufficient-space upgrade errors, the stated requirement is at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. This is not a universal minimum for every current Windows installation and does not, by itself, diagnose slowness. Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10 to identify large temporary files, previous installations, or applications you can safely remove.
  • Internet access: Confirm that ordinary websites load and that the PC is not switching repeatedly between Wi-Fi networks. A metered connection, captive portal, or unstable VPN can interrupt downloads.
  • Date and time: In Settings > Time & language > Date & time (Windows 11) or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time (Windows 10), enable automatic time and time-zone settings, then select Sync now if available.
  • Power: Keep a laptop connected to AC power during a download and restart. Do not force the power off while the screen says that Windows is installing or undoing changes unless it has clearly been frozen for an unusually long period and you have exhausted safer options.
  • Security software and VPNs: Microsoft notes that some third-party security products and VPN configurations can interfere with feature updates. Do not disable protection indiscriminately. If Microsoft’s instructions for a particular error call for temporary removal of incompatible security software, make sure you have a compatible replacement or reinstall package ready and restore protection immediately afterward.
  • Drivers and services: A faulty storage, graphics, network, or chipset driver can look like an update failure. Install drivers offered through Windows Update or the device manufacturer when they match your model; avoid random driver packages.

Restart update-related services only when directed

Some errors are caused by a stopped update service or a damaged download cache. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking update services for particular failures. If a Microsoft procedure tells you to stop and restart services or clear a cache, follow that procedure exactly and use an administrator account. Do not delete arbitrary folders in C:Windows; a wrong deletion can create a new servicing problem.

Diagnose slowness separately from the update error

A PC may remain slow even after an update installs correctly. Check these causes independently so that you do not remove a security update to solve a startup-load or hardware bottleneck.

Find what is consuming resources

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk in turn. Let the list settle for a minute rather than judging a brief spike during an update.
  3. On Startup apps, disable only programs you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. Leave security, touchpad, audio, backup, and hardware-control utilities enabled unless their vendor documents otherwise.
  4. Restart and compare the result. If the PC is responsive after reducing startup load, the update may have exposed a pre-existing background-app problem rather than caused it.

Check storage and software age

Keep enough free space for temporary update files and the rollback copy Windows may need. Remove unneeded applications, empty temporary-file categories that you recognize, and move large personal media rather than deleting it. Install pending application updates from their publishers. Microsoft identifies outdated software as one contributor to poor performance.

Scan for malware

Run a Windows Security scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. A full scan takes longer than a quick scan but checks more files. If the computer is unstable, save work first and allow the scan to finish without running other demanding tasks.

Account for hardware limits

Older processors, limited memory, failing storage, and thermal throttling can make a modern Windows release feel slow. If Task Manager shows memory or disk activity staying near its limit when no update is running, an update rollback is unlikely to be a durable fix. Microsoft cautions that older PCs may not improve substantially from software cleanup alone.

Symptom Checks to make What it suggests
Slowness only while downloading or installing Update activity, disk space, network stability, and available CPU/disk capacity Normal servicing load or a constrained system; wait for completion before judging performance
Slowness after every sign-in Task Manager startup apps, background processes, malware scan, and storage usage Startup or general performance issue that may be unrelated to one update
Crashes began immediately after one KB installed Update history, event timing, driver changes, and whether uninstalling that KB is offered A specific update is plausible, but confirm the timeline before rollback
Files appear missing after an update Correct user profile, search, OneDrive or other sync status, and update history Profile, sync, or indexing issue; do not reset Windows before checking locations

Repair damaged Windows components with DISM and SFC

If updates repeatedly fail, Windows features behave inconsistently, or error messages suggest corrupted system files, use Microsoft’s documented repair order. These are advanced commands intended for people comfortable with an administrator command line.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for Deployment Image Servicing and Management to reach completion. It may appear to pause for several minutes.

  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow

Allow System File Checker to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows, then try Windows Update again.

Understand the results

  • If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the system-file check did not find corruption; the update problem may have another cause.
  • If SFC repaired files, restart before testing. A repair result does not prove that the original update issue has been identified.
  • If DISM or SFC cannot complete, copy the exact message. Repeating commands without addressing the reported error can waste time; use Windows Recovery Environment or Microsoft Support guidance for that message.

Microsoft describes DISM and SFC as built-in tools that scan for corrupted system files and restore missing or damaged Windows components, helping return a system to a stable state. They require administrator permissions and should not be run from an ordinary, unelevated prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When one recent update is the likely trigger

Consider rollback only when the timing is strong: a known update installed, the problem began afterward, and other checks do not explain it. Removing an update can remove security fixes, and Microsoft says some updates cannot be uninstalled.

Uninstall from a working Windows desktop

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  2. Select Uninstall updates.
  3. Select the suspect update and choose Uninstall, if Windows offers that control.
  4. Restart and test the specific failure you recorded. Do not treat a temporary improvement as proof that all performance problems are solved.

Windows 10 uses Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates. Exact labels vary by release.

Uninstall from Windows Recovery Environment

If Windows will not start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, and choose the available quality or feature update option. WinRE may ask for an administrator account or recovery key. If the update is not removable, use another recovery tool rather than forcing the operation.

Do not make permanent pausing the default fix

Pausing updates can be a short-term scheduling measure while you investigate, but it is not a substitute for repairing the cause. Leaving security updates blocked indefinitely increases exposure and can make a later upgrade more disruptive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when it is available

Supported Windows 11 PCs may offer a less disruptive alternative to uninstalling an update: Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This downloads and reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves installed apps, personal files, and settings.

The control may be absent on a work- or school-managed device, on an older Windows 11 release, or when the required servicing update is not installed. Its absence can therefore reflect eligibility or policy, not a new hardware fault. Save work, connect reliable power and internet, and allow the process to complete without forced shutdowns.

Escalate through Windows Recovery Environment

WinRE provides recovery tools when ordinary Windows troubleshooting cannot restore a usable system. Depending on the failure, it can include:

Tool Best fit Main consequence or limitation
Startup Repair Windows fails during boot Targets startup configuration; it is not a general performance optimizer
System Restore A recent driver, application, or configuration change caused instability and restore points exist Rolls system state back to a restore point; it does not replace a personal-file backup
Uninstall Updates A specific recent update aligns with the failure Some updates cannot be removed; removing a security fix has risk
Command Prompt Advanced offline repair or diagnostics Requires careful commands and an administrator or recovery credential
Reset this PC Windows remains damaged after less disruptive options Apps and settings are removed; personal-file impact depends on the selected reset option

Reach WinRE when Windows still starts

From the sign-in or desktop screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. You can also use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 10. Menus can differ by release.

Reach WinRE when Windows will not start

Windows may enter automatic repair after repeated failed starts. If it does not, create Windows installation media on a USB drive using another working PC, boot the affected computer from that media, and choose Repair your computer to reach WinRE. This USB is an optional recovery aid for a non-booting system, not a requirement for routine Windows Update troubleshooting.

Reset this PC: the last-resort trade-off

Reset reinstalls Windows and should follow a backup and a review of less disruptive choices. In WinRE or Windows Settings, choose the reset option that matches your data and recovery needs.

Choice What remains What is removed
Keep my files Personal files in the user profile Installed applications and changed settings
Remove everything Nothing from the Windows installation is retained Personal files, applications, and settings

Cloud download fetches a fresh Windows image. Local reinstall uses files already on the device and may not include the latest updates. Cloud download needs a dependable internet connection; local reinstall can fail if the local component files are damaged.

Back up first and locate the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. Without the key, a recovery operation may leave encrypted data inaccessible. Reset is a reinstallation, not a guarantee that aging hardware, incompatible drivers, or third-party software will stop causing problems.

Windows 10’s support status changes the decision

Microsoft states that free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 PC that cannot receive ordinary security servicing has a different risk profile from a Windows 11 PC with a single failed update. Confirm the device’s edition and eligibility for any available support or upgrade path before investing heavily in repeated repairs. Do not assume that a successful rollback restores an ongoing security-update supply.

  3. Separate performance causes: Review Task Manager, startup apps, storage, malware scans, software updates, drivers, and hardware limits.
  4. Repair components: From an elevated Command Prompt, run DISM first and SFC second, then restart.
  5. Target one update: If the timeline supports it, uninstall the available update from Settings or WinRE, understanding the security trade-off.
  6. Prefer repair reinstall on eligible Windows 11 systems: Use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now when offered.
  7. Escalate carefully: Use Startup Repair, System Restore, or other WinRE tools; reserve Reset this PC for failures that survive less disruptive measures.

This order minimizes data loss while still giving you a route from a simple stuck download to damaged system components or a non-booting installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%?

The percentage alone does not identify the cause. Check free storage, network stability, date and time, update history, and whether the process is still using disk or network resources. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and restart before attempting component repair.

What if Windows Update reached 51–99% and will not finish?

Record the error and whether the failure occurs during restart. Allow a connected, powered PC reasonable time to complete, then use the troubleshooter. If repeated attempts fail, run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt and review the update history for a specific removable update.

Can I recover files that seem to have disappeared after an update?

Before resetting Windows, verify that you signed into the expected user profile, search the drive, and check the status of any file-sync service. A profile or synchronization problem can look like data loss; reset operations can make recovery harder.

Why is the Windows 11 repair-reinstall option missing?

Microsoft says it may be unavailable on work- or school-managed devices, older Windows 11 releases, or systems missing the required servicing update. The missing control can therefore reflect eligibility or policy rather than a new fault.
