If Windows 11 appears stuck on the “Getting Things Ready” screen, first identify whether it appeared during an update, a restart, or initial setup. Microsoft’s reviewed support guidance does not treat that exact message as a separate diagnostic condition or set a universal waiting time. Keep the PC powered while an update or restart is in progress; if Windows eventually opens, troubleshoot Windows Update. If it will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and move from targeted repair options to broader recovery only after considering file loss.
How long should I wait on Getting Things Ready?
There is no Microsoft-prescribed time limit for this exact screen, so a precise cutoff would be a guess. Consider what the PC is doing: is the screen changing, did the device restart recently, and did the message appear during an update or first-time setup? Those details help distinguish a process that may still be underway from a startup failure.
Keep the device powered during an update or restart. Microsoft notes that updates may need a restart to finish, and recommends keeping the PC plugged in and online while updates download (Windows Update FAQ). If the PC remains on the same screen and Windows does not become accessible, move to the recovery steps below rather than relying on an unsupported wait-time rule.

What do I do if my PC is stuck on Getting Things Ready?
Choose the path that matches the current state of the PC: update troubleshooting if Windows opens, or WinRE recovery if it cannot start. Avoid jumping straight to a reset or reinstall; those options can affect files, apps, and settings.

If Windows opens: run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this as the starting point for Windows 11 update problems (Windows Update Troubleshooter).
- When it finishes, restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates again. If you use the Settings troubleshooting route instead, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, run Windows Update, then restart and check again.
If an update error code appears
Use the error-specific guidance rather than assuming every stalled update has the same cause. Microsoft associates these codes with the following scenarios on its Windows update troubleshooting page:
- 0x8007000d: possible update-file or cache corruption.
- 0x800705b4: a slow or interrupted update.
- 0x80240034: an incomplete update or connection issue.
- 0xC1900101: an incompatible driver.
Check internet access and available storage, and run the troubleshooter. Microsoft describes stopping Windows Update and clearing the contents of SoftwareDistribution for a cache-corruption scenario; this is a targeted step, not a first move for every update problem. Follow the relevant Microsoft instructions for that scenario before changing update components.
For certain upgrades, Microsoft states a minimum of 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Those figures apply to the upgrade scenario described on its page; they are not a universal free-space requirement for every Windows Update operation.

If Windows will not start: try Startup Repair
Open Windows Recovery Environment and navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart. Startup Repair scans for startup issues and attempts to fix some of them, including certain problems involving missing or damaged system files, boot configuration data, the master boot record, incompatible drivers, or registry errors. It is not a guarantee that Windows will start. On an encrypted device, you may need the BitLocker recovery key. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.
If the problem began after an update: consider uninstalling it
From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates. Microsoft lists this as a recovery option when a recent update may be involved. It targets the update rather than resetting Windows, but the available choices and consequences depend on the recovery path and device state. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before proceeding.
Use Safe Mode to narrow down the problem
In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, restart, and choose Safe Mode. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If the issue does not occur in that reduced environment, it can help narrow down the cause, but it is a diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix. Microsoft explains the options on its Windows startup settings page.

Will I lose my files if I use Startup Repair or reset Windows?
Startup Repair is designed to address certain startup problems, not to reinstall Windows. Reset and reinstall choices have broader effects, and the outcome depends on which option you select. Back up important files before recovery whenever Windows or another available method lets you do so. If the device is encrypted, have the BitLocker recovery key available.

| Startup Repair | Certain problems that prevent Windows from starting. | Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance describes a startup repair, not a Windows reset or reinstall. It does not promise a fix. |
| Uninstall updates | A problem that began after a recent Windows update. | Targets an update; review the choices shown in WinRE and Microsoft’s recovery guidance for their effects. |
| Reset this PC | A broader Windows recovery option. | Available choices differ in whether personal files are kept or removed, and apps and settings can be affected. Read the selected option carefully before confirming. |
| Reinstall from recovery media | A last-resort route to reinstall Windows. | Microsoft says reinstalling from a recovery drive removes personal files, apps, and settings. Back up first if possible. |
Microsoft recommends creating a recovery drive on a USB drive while the PC is working. Recovery media is preparation for a last-resort recovery path, not a fix for a stalled screen by itself. See Microsoft’s recovery options for the available paths and their consequences.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
If Windows remains inaccessible after the relevant recovery options, or you suspect hardware trouble, seek device-specific support from the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional. Microsoft’s general guidance cannot diagnose a particular PC, and the same screen wording can occur in different update or setup contexts. Note what happened immediately before it appeared and any visible error code; that information can help determine the next appropriate step.
