If WhatsApp says verification is unavailable for an hour, wait until the countdown ends before trying again. Don’t repeatedly request codes or change the phone number while the timer is active. Then retry with the correct full international number; if SMS still doesn’t arrive and WhatsApp offers Call Me, use the automated call. The message tells you to wait, but WhatsApp’s published guidance does not establish one universal cause or duration for every one-hour timer.
What the one-hour verification message means
Treat the countdown shown in WhatsApp as the instruction: let it finish before requesting another code. WhatsApp’s help article describes a five-minute timer as an example and says to wait; that example does not mean every one-hour timer will end after five minutes or has the same cause. If you have entered an incorrect code more than once, WhatsApp says there is no way to speed up the designated wait.
The official guidance does not define every cause of the exact “Unavailable for 1 Hour” wording. Don’t assume it proves a ban, or that a particular number of attempts, network address, carrier, or fraud signal caused it. The safe approach is to wait, then check the number and code-delivery route.

Fix the verification problem step by step
- Identify which screen you have. A code countdown, “Login not available right now,” and a two-step verification prompt are different situations. Follow the section below that matches what WhatsApp displays.
- Wait for the countdown to finish. Don’t request codes repeatedly or edit the number during the timer. WhatsApp says its designated wait after too many incorrect code guesses cannot be made faster. WhatsApp’s “Can’t register phone number” guidance gives a five-minute timer example; it does not set the duration for every timer.
- Check the number format before retrying. Select the right country and enter the complete phone number with its country code. Don’t add an international exit code or a leading zero that should not be included in the international format. See WhatsApp’s registration instructions.
- Make sure the number and phone can receive codes. Confirm the SIM is active, the phone has reception, and the number can receive ordinary SMS messages and voice calls. Check whether call-blocking settings or apps could be stopping a verification call. Make sure mobile data or Wi-Fi is working.
- Update WhatsApp, then try SMS once. Use the latest version of the app. After the timer ends, request the SMS code and allow time for it to arrive.
- Use the call option if it appears. If the SMS does not arrive and WhatsApp offers Call Me, answer the automated call and enter the six-digit code it reads aloud. This is the normal alternative registration route, not a way to skip the timer.
Check whether your number can register
WhatsApp registration requires an active phone number that can receive SMS and calls. WhatsApp says VoIP, toll-free, premium-rate, universal-access, and most landline numbers aren’t supported for ordinary registration. A number that cannot receive the required message or call will not be fixed by repeatedly requesting codes. Check WhatsApp’s current registration requirements if you’re unsure whether your number type is supported.

If WhatsApp says “Login not available right now”
This message is not the same as a code countdown. WhatsApp says it can indicate suspicious activity or an issue involving its Terms of Service, but it also notes that problems such as lacking an active SIM, signal, or code delivery may have other causes. The screen alone does not prove your account is banned. Try again later; if the Contact Us option appears, use it to reach WhatsApp Support. The six-digit registration code verifies that you control the phone number. A two-step verification PIN or password is an additional account-security check; it is not the SMS registration code. If the screen asks for a two-step PIN, requesting more SMS codes does not answer that prompt.

Email verification is conditional, not a general alternative for first-time registration. WhatsApp describes email code delivery for an existing account when an email address was added previously; registering a number normally uses SMS or a voice call. What not to do while the timer is active
- Don’t guess codes or keep requesting new ones; WhatsApp says the designated wait cannot be shortened after too many incorrect guesses.
- Don’t change the number during the countdown. WhatsApp specifically advises against editing it during its five-minute timer example.
- Don’t treat reinstalling WhatsApp, restarting the phone, or switching networks as a way to defeat an account-side timer. WhatsApp lists reinstalling among general troubleshooting options, not as a timer bypass; back up chats before reinstalling.
- Don’t use unofficial WhatsApp apps, another person’s number, or paid “unlock” services as a workaround.
