If a website in Chrome shows strings such as ä or ®, it is usually a character-encoding mismatch called mojibake. If you see empty boxes instead, the page may be missing a font glyph. Start by checking whether the problem affects one site or many, then use Incognito to separate a site issue from a browser extension or stored data.
Identify what kind of text problem you have
The shape of the problem helps narrow down its cause:
- Garbled sequences such as “Ô, “” or “�”: usually mojibake—the page’s bytes were decoded using an encoding that does not match the text.
- Empty squares or missing characters: more likely a font-rendering problem: Chrome cannot display the needed character with the available font.
- Fuzzy or poorly smoothed text: may be related to font rendering settings rather than encoding.
Google describes garbled text as an encoding mismatch. Chromium notes that missing or conflicting character-set declarations can keep a page from displaying correctly: Google Chrome Help and Chromium charset guidance.
Check whether the problem is one website or many
If only one site is affected
The site may be sending an incorrect character set in its HTTP response header or declaring the wrong charset in its HTML. Try the same page in another browser. If it is garbled there too, that points more strongly to the site than to Chrome. A visitor can try the steps below, but the durable correction may need to come from the site owner.

If several sites are affected
Look for a local cause, such as a Chrome extension, cached browser state, an outdated browser, security software interference, or a system font issue. Continue with the Incognito test before changing settings or resetting Chrome.
Use Incognito to test extensions and stored browser state
- In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window.
- Visit the same URL and compare the text.
- If it displays normally in Incognito, disable your extensions in a regular window, then turn them back on one at a time until the issue returns. The extension enabled just before the problem reappears is a likely cause.
- If the page is still garbled in Incognito, the issue is less likely to be caused by an extension or ordinary browsing data. Continue with the site-scope and font checks.
Incognito is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a single cause: it changes more than one aspect of the browsing session.

Clear browser data, update Chrome, and restart
If the issue appears tied to your regular Chrome profile, clear browsing data—selecting cached files and, if appropriate, cookies—then update Chrome and close it fully before reopening it. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites, so include them only if you are comfortable signing in again.

Check fonts when characters are boxes or text looks fuzzy
Windows
For boxes, missing characters, or fuzzy text, run the Windows ClearType Text Tuner. If that does not resolve fuzzy text, check the Windows setting labeled Smooth edges of screen fonts, then reopen Chrome. These steps target rendering; they do not correct a website that sends text using the wrong character encoding.
macOS and Linux
Compare the page in another browser. If the missing glyphs persist, inspect recently installed or damaged system fonts. The Google guidance cited here does not prescribe a platform-specific font reset procedure for macOS or Linux, so avoid applying Windows-only instructions to those systems.

Why Chrome’s encoding menu is not the fix it used to be
Chrome no longer provides a built-in text-encoding menu. Google suggests that users may try a Chrome Web Store extension for garbled text, but an extension is at most a workaround for viewing a page; it does not repair the website’s response. Be cautious about granting extensions access to browsing data.

If you maintain the affected website
Check that the server sends the correct Content-Type charset, use a legal IANA character-set name, and make the HTTP header and HTML declaration agree. For UTF-8, the response commonly includes Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8, with a matching HTML declaration such as <meta charset="utf-8">. The actual charset must match how the page was encoded; declaring UTF-8 does not convert content that was saved in another encoding.

Escalate only after the simple checks
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software is interfering with page loading.
- Close unnecessary applications if the computer is low on available memory.
- Run Chrome Safety Check and, if the earlier steps fail, consider resetting Chrome settings.
- Do not install “codec” or “font fix” downloads offered by unexpected pop-ups. They are not a safe or relevant way to correct a website’s character encoding.
