For Windows PC problems, identify whether The Witcher 3 crashes, will not launch, or runs poorly, then follow the matching steps below. Start by verifying the game files and closing unnecessary apps; use the separate REDlauncher steps if the launcher itself will not open. On Steam Deck, CD PROJEKT RED recommends launching with DirectX 11. These PC instructions do not establish a troubleshooting procedure for console editions.
Before troubleshooting, identify where the problem occurs
Write down your platform, storefront, and game version (shown in the main menu). Note whether the failure happens before REDlauncher opens, after you select Play, or during gameplay. Also record whether you use mods, trainers, console commands, overlays, or custom launch parameters. CD PROJEKT RED’s support form asks for these details, along with the DirectX mode, when you report a problem: CD PROJEKT RED Support.
The steps below focus on Windows PC, with a separate Steam Deck instruction. They should not be assumed to apply to PlayStation or Xbox. Troubleshooting recommendations are not guaranteed fixes.
If The Witcher 3 crashes or closes unexpectedly
CD PROJEKT RED recommends checking the PC requirements, closing nonessential applications, checking for malware, and verifying the installation files before moving on to a clean graphics-driver installation. Its crash guidance specifically includes antivirus or antimalware software among apps to turn off temporarily while troubleshooting: official crash troubleshooting.

- Check that your PC meets the applicable requirements for your game version and settings.
- Close nonessential apps, including overlays and monitoring tools. If you temporarily disable antivirus or antimalware protection for diagnosis, restore it afterward.
- Check that the PC is free of malware.
- Verify the game files using the instructions for your storefront below.
- If the crash continues, clean-install the graphics driver for your GPU, removing the previous driver first. Use the driver for your exact GPU from its vendor: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, testing an older driver may also be worthwhile; CD PROJEKT RED notes that a newer driver is not always the answer.
If the game will not launch
First distinguish a game launch failure from REDlauncher failing to open. If REDlauncher opens but the game does not start, CD PROJEKT RED’s PC checklist is to check requirements, clean-install the graphics driver, reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, close unnecessary apps (especially overlays), and try a Windows clean boot. - Check the applicable system requirements and verify the game files.
- Clean-install the graphics driver for your GPU, following the vendor’s instructions.
- Reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables linked in CD PROJEKT RED’s support article. Install from the oldest package upward and skip ARM packages.
- Close unnecessary applications and overlays, including GeForce Experience, RivaTuner, MSI Afterburner, MSI Gaming app, and Fraps.
- Try a Windows clean boot using Microsoft’s documented procedure, then test the game before restoring your usual startup apps.
If it still fails, contact CD PROJEKT RED Support and include any error code or message shown on screen.

If REDlauncher itself will not open
These steps address the launcher, not a crash after the game has started. Close REDlauncher, then follow CD PROJEKT RED’s REDlauncher troubleshooting guidance:

- Run the storefront client—Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or GOG Galaxy—as administrator, then try opening the game.
- If that does not help, delete the REDlauncher folder at
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Redand try again. - Check that no custom launch parameters are set for the game.
If REDlauncher still does not open, submit a support ticket with your storefront, game version, and any error message. Avoid changing launch settings beyond the documented steps unless support directs you to do so.
If the game stutters, has low frame rates, or loads slowly
CD PROJEKT RED groups low frame rates, choppy or slow performance, and long load times under performance issues. Its published sequence is to clean-install the graphics driver, verify the game files, disable overlays and unnecessary apps, then contact support with a video if possible: official performance guidance.

- Clean-install the appropriate graphics driver. If performance worsened after a driver update, consider testing the previous driver rather than assuming the newest one is best.
- Verify the game files in your storefront.
- Turn off overlays such as Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or Galaxy, and close unnecessary programs, including hardware-monitoring and antivirus or antimalware software, while checking whether performance changes.
- Compare performance after adjusting output resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing mode, or upscaling. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what affects the problem.
Resolution matters because a higher output resolution requires rendering more pixels; upscaling instead renders at a lower resolution and enlarges the result. CD PROJEKT RED illustrates the difference with 5120 × 2880 (14,745,600 pixels) and 2560 × 1440 (3,686,400 pixels), but those are pixel-count examples, not frame-rate benchmarks: resolution and upscaling explanation. Expected frame rates also vary by scene, system configuration, settings, and output resolution; the published targets on the PC requirements page are based on CD PROJEKT RED QA testing, not a guarantee for every system.
If the problem occurs only in a particular location, include the relevant save files from %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves in your support report. A short video showing the issue can help support understand the behavior.

Verify game files in the right storefront
CD PROJEKT RED says corrupted installation files can cause crashes, graphical problems, or failure to launch. Use the storefront’s built-in verification or repair tool and let it finish; do not start by manually deleting game files. The steps below come from its file verification instructions.

Steam Deck: switch to DirectX 11
For Steam Deck, CD PROJEKT RED recommends launching the game in DirectX 11. Its support article says REDlauncher defaults to DirectX 12; switch the launch choice to DirectX 11 before starting the game: Steam Deck launch guidance. This instruction is specific to Steam Deck; the source does not recommend DirectX 11 as a universal fix for Windows PCs.
Check storage and requirements
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements page states that an SSD is required for the game’s latest technical enhancements. If your PC does not have one, treat it as a requirements issue to address—not as evidence that an SSD will fix every crash, launch failure, or stutter. Review the current requirements for the applicable version before changing hardware or settings.
What to send support if the problem remains
Use the CD PROJEKT RED support form and describe the symptom precisely. Include the storefront and platform, game version, DirectX mode, whether mods/trainers/commands are in use, and any displayed error code or message. Attach a DxDiag report where relevant. For performance issues, add a video if possible; if the issue is limited to one location, include the relevant save files from the folder listed above.
Requirements and available support-form version choices can change. Check the current form and requirements page when submitting a report rather than relying on an old version label.
