The UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP blue-screen error is bug check 0x7F. It can follow a driver or software conflict, overclocking, faulty or mismatched memory, or another hardware problem; the code alone does not identify which one. Start with recent changes and reversible checks, then use memory and manufacturer diagnostics before replacing hardware.
What does Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap mean?
Microsoft describes bug check 0x7F as a trap generated by the Intel CPU that the Windows kernel failed to catch. The first bug-check parameter identifies the trap number; parameter 0x8 indicates a double fault. A double fault can result from a kernel stack overflow or hardware problems. In some cases, multiple drivers attached to the same stack can contribute to a stack overflow through file-system recursion. See Microsoft’s 0x7F technical reference.

Microsoft lists faulty or mismatched memory and failing hardware among common possibilities. Other candidates include a motherboard or power-supply problem, incompatible drives or controllers, overclocking, and driver or service conflicts. During an operating-system upgrade, incompatible software such as a device driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup tool can also be involved. These possibilities are not a diagnosis of your PC.
What to do first when Windows shows stop code 0x7F
1. Record the code and recent changes
Write down the exact stop code and, if shown, its first parameter. Note when the crashes began and whether you had just added hardware, installed or updated a driver or application, installed a Windows update, or changed overclocking settings. The timing can help narrow the next check, but it does not prove what caused the crash.

2. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down the PC before disconnecting or removing newly installed hardware. Then restart and see whether the crash returns. If you are unsure how to remove a component safely, consult the computer or component maker’s instructions instead of opening the PC. Microsoft recommends removing newly added hardware when stop-code errors recur.
3. Use Safe Mode if Windows will not start reliably
If normal startup is difficult, use Windows Recovery Environment to start in Safe Mode, following Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 stop-code troubleshooting guidance. From Safe Mode, review recently installed or updated drivers and software. If a driver change immediately preceded the crashes, remove or roll back that driver where Windows allows it; if you cannot boot normally, use the appropriate recovery options rather than repeatedly attempting normal startup.
4. Check devices, Windows updates, and manufacturer updates
Open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning symbol. For a device that is a plausible suspect, update, disable, or uninstall its driver as appropriate. Install available Windows updates. Also check the computer or component maker’s support page for relevant ACPI/BIOS, storage-controller, or network-card updates, using the exact system model and the maker’s instructions. Firmware updates can carry more risk than ordinary settings changes, so do not install one intended for a different model.

5. Test memory and run hardware diagnostics
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic to check system memory, and use diagnostics supplied by the computer manufacturer to check other hardware. Faulty or mismatched memory is one documented possibility, but a test result should guide any replacement decision. If diagnostics indicate a memory fault, confirm the required memory type and configuration for your exact computer before buying or installing a module; RAM is not a universal fix for this stop code.
6. Return overclocking to default and review Event Viewer
If the CPU or memory is overclocked, return it to the manufacturer’s default settings and see whether the crashes continue. Review the System log in Event Viewer around the time of a crash for clues about a device or driver. An event near a crash may help direct troubleshooting, but it does not by itself establish the root cause.

7. Consider Windows recovery if the crashes continue
If the preceding checks do not resolve recurring crashes, consider System Restore or another recovery option appropriate to your situation. Microsoft’s consumer guidance covers recovery options for Windows 10 and 11. Choose an option with your personal data and ability to start Windows in mind; a full reinstall is not the first troubleshooting step.

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Recent change: Undo or investigate the hardware, driver, application, update, or clock-setting change that preceded the first crash.
- Device warning: Investigate the affected device and its driver before making unrelated system changes.
- Diagnostic result: Use a memory or manufacturer diagnostic result to guide a repair or replacement decision, and verify component compatibility.
- Recurring crash pattern: If basic checks do not isolate a cause, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional to run hardware diagnostics.
Microsoft Support also suggests keeping roughly 10% to 15% of the drive free for Windows and applications to create swap files and perform other functions. Treat this as general stop-code troubleshooting guidance, not as an established specific cause of 0x7F.
When dump analysis or professional diagnostics may help
For advanced analysis of crash dumps, Microsoft recommends starting with !analyze -v, comparing recurring patterns across dumps, and then using debugger commands such as kv and, depending on the stack, .trap or .tss. This requires debugging tools and experience interpreting their output. For most users, the stop code, recent-change history, and results from built-in or manufacturer diagnostics are more useful information to bring to support or a repair professional.
A dump naming a Windows component does not, by itself, prove that Windows or that component caused the failure. The documented causes span hardware, drivers, software conflicts, and kernel stack problems. If the crashes persist and you cannot isolate the failing part, manufacturer diagnostics or qualified repair help are more appropriate than replacing components at random.
