Suyu shows “Encryption keys are missing” when it cannot find the console-derived files needed to decrypt Nintendo Switch content. The usual fix is straightforward: dump your own keys from your Switch, place them in Suyu’s active keys folder, and restart the emulator.
Do not download a “Suyu key pack.” Suyu’s official documentation requires users to dump keys and system files from their own console. The project identifies suyu.dev and its Git repository as the official sources.
What the Suyu encryption-key error means
Switch games, updates, DLC, firmware, and other system content can be encrypted. Suyu needs console-derived keys to decrypt that content. Its official FAQ describes the related failure as Missing Derivation Components.

Firmware is separate. Keys provide decryption material; firmware provides system files and services that some games require. Installing firmware will not replace missing prod.keys or title.keys.

Before troubleshooting: check Suyu’s documented release status
The official Suyu repository currently lists two releases. The newest is v0.0.3, released April 12, 2024. That release officially supports firmware 17.0.0. Firmware 18.0.0 may work, but the release notes do not guarantee it. The official release page does not document a newer release or a newer supported-firmware list.
That matters when diagnosing a setup that contains very new firmware, keys, updates, or DLC. A newer file is not automatically compatible with this Suyu release.
Fix the error on Windows
- Obtain
prod.keysand, where your setup requires it,title.keysby dumping them from your own Nintendo Switch. - Open Suyu.
- Choose File → Open Suyu Folder. The official FAQ uses lowercase wording—
file→open suyu folder—but it is the same command. - Open the
keysfolder. Create it if it does not exist. - Copy the files directly into that folder:
prod.keys
title.keys- Close Suyu completely and launch it again.
The expected standard Windows location is:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingsuyukeysA quick way to reach the parent folder is to press Win+R, enter %appdata%, and open suyu followed by keys.
Check the Windows filenames
Windows may hide known extensions, so a file that appears to be prod.keys could actually be prod.keys.txt. In File Explorer, enable View → Show → File name extensions. The names must be exactly:
prod.keys
title.keysDo not use prod.key, prod.keys.txt, or a second nested folder. This is correct:
suyukeysprod.keys
suyukeystitle.keysThis is incorrect:

For a standard native Linux installation, Suyu’s user-data directory is:

cp ~/Downloads/title.keys ~/.local/share/suyu/keys/Restart Suyu after copying the files. To verify that they exist and are readable:
ls -l ~/.local/share/suyu/keysIf ownership or permissions are wrong, these commands apply to files in that standard path:
chmod 600 ~/.local/share/suyu/keys/prod.keys
chmod 600 ~/.local/share/suyu/keys/title.keys
sudo chown "$USER:$USER" ~/.local/share/suyu/keys/prod.keys
sudo chown "$USER:$USER" ~/.local/share/suyu/keys/title.keysDo not run those commands against a guessed directory if you installed Suyu as a sandboxed package. Use Suyu’s File → Open Suyu Folder command to identify the directory used by the running build.
Fix the error on macOS
Builds using the standard application-support layout commonly use:
~/Library/Application Support/suyu/keys/In Finder, hold Option while opening the Go menu, then select Library. From there, open Application Support/suyu/keys.
The safer method is to open Suyu and use File → Open Suyu Folder, because the active directory can differ between builds.
If the rebuilt macOS application will not open, the official v0.0.3 release notes document this Terminal command:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine suyu.appRun it from the directory containing suyu.app. This addresses macOS launch quarantine; it does not install keys.

Android: use the build’s own import option
There is no single verified Android path or stable menu label that applies to every Suyu-based build. Depending on the build, the option may be called Settings → Install Keys, Import Keys, or something similar.
Use the key-import option shown by your particular build and select the files dumped from your own Switch. Android 11 and later restrict access to parts of Android/data, so a file manager may not be able to copy files there manually. If the build does not expose a working import option, do not assume that copying to a guessed package folder will work.
Portable and sandboxed installations use different folders
A correct key file can still be ignored when it was placed in another Suyu installation’s user directory. This commonly happens when switching between:
- a normal installed build and a portable build;
- different Suyu executable folders;
- native and sandboxed Linux packages; or
- multiple unofficial builds.
A portable build may keep its data beside the executable, for example:
suyuuserkeysprod.keysSandboxed Linux packages may use an application-specific directory below ~/.var/app/. The application ID and layout vary, so the dependable procedure is to open the running Suyu build and select File → Open Suyu Folder. Put the files in the keys directory shown there.
If the files are present but the error remains
1. Confirm that Suyu is reading the folder you edited
Use the in-app folder command rather than searching your hard drive for every copy of prod.keys. Remove confusion caused by old installations, portable copies, or sandboxed packages.

2. Confirm the files are directly inside keys
Suyu should see:
keys/prod.keys
keys/title.keysIt may ignore files inside an archive or an extra folder such as keys/switch-keys/prod.keys.
3. Restart Suyu
Close the emulator fully and relaunch it. Suyu may not rescan key files during the current session after they are added or replaced.

If older games work but a newer game, update, or DLC fails, the dumped keys or firmware may not cover the newer cryptographic revisions or system components. Update the source Switch, dump fresh keys and firmware, replace the old files, and restart Suyu.
Do not assume that installing firmware fixes a key problem. The two components serve different purposes.
5. Check firmware compatibility separately
Depending on the build, the firmware command may appear as Tools → Install Firmware or Tools → Install Firmware from Directory. Some builds accept a firmware ZIP; others require the archive to be extracted first.
Because Suyu v0.0.3 officially supports firmware 17.0.0 and does not guarantee 18.0.0, test with a documented-compatible firmware version before blaming the key files.

Some third-party guides describe Tools → Install Decryption Keys. The current official FAQ instead documents manually placing the files through File → Open Suyu Folder, and the official release documentation does not list that menu as a universal current feature.

Your particular build may expose an import command, but if it does not, use the active-folder method. Menu labels copied from an older or modified build may not match your installation.
When Suyu crashes after installing keys
A crash immediately after adding prod.keys is not proof that the key file is missing. Community reports have associated this symptom with recently added game updates or DLC, and one report associated it with firmware 20.0.0/20.0.1. These are community observations, not official compatibility guidance.
For a controlled test:
- Close Suyu.
- Temporarily remove or disable the most recently added update or DLC.
- Verify that your firmware matches the version officially supported by your Suyu release.
- Launch Suyu again.
Another community report describes a crash after dismissing the missing-keys dialog and suggests deleting the Suyu configuration directory or replacing an unofficial build. Neither remedy is confirmed by Suyu’s official FAQ, so back up your configuration before attempting a reset and prefer the official repository source.
