If Windows repeatedly opens Automatic Repair and reports “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” or “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC,” the message means only that the automated startup attempt failed. It does not identify one definite cause. Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to choose the least disruptive option that matches what changed recently: try Startup Repair once, remove a suspect update, restore an earlier system state, and only then consider Reset this PC or a reinstall. Protect your files and have your BitLocker recovery key available before making changes.

What the Automatic Repair message actually means

Windows Recovery Environment is a separate recovery system that can launch after Windows fails to start correctly several times. Its tools include Startup Repair, System Restore, Uninstall Updates, Reset this PC and command-line utilities. The blue-screen wording is commonly either “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” or “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC.” Both indicate that Startup Repair completed an attempt without correcting the startup problem; neither proves that your SSD, boot configuration, update, drivers or files are irreparably damaged.

Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a built-in Windows recovery tool that helps fix issues preventing the operating system from starting.” It targets common startup conditions such as missing or damaged system files and boot-configuration problems, but it cannot repair every failure. Treat the report it displays as useful context, not as a complete diagnosis.

Before choosing a repair option

Get into Windows Recovery Environment

When repeated failed boots trigger recovery, select Advanced options on the Automatic Repair screen, then choose Troubleshoot. If WinRE does not appear, you can reach it from Windows installation or recovery media created on another working computer. The exact wording and available choices can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions and versions.

WinRE is not the same as normal Safe Mode or the regular Windows desktop. It runs independently so that it can work on an installation that cannot finish booting. A tool may therefore ask you to select an account, enter its password, or unlock an encrypted volume before it can continue. If an option is missing, do not assume that another menu or an internet command will safely substitute for it; feature availability depends on the Windows version and the device’s recovery configuration.

Protect data and credentials first

  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, memory cards and external drives. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and any drive required to boot.
  • If the disk is encrypted with BitLocker, locate the recovery key before selecting recovery actions. WinRE may request it to unlock the Windows volume.
  • If you can reach your files through another computer, a backup, or a temporary file-copy environment, copy irreplaceable documents and photos before using Reset or reinstalling Windows.
  • Keep the computer connected to reliable power. Interrupting a reset, update removal or installation can leave the system in a worse state.
  • Write down the exact error wording and what happened immediately before the first failed boot. “After an update” points to a different option than “after installing a driver,” even though both may end at the same blue screen.

Do not start a reset merely because the screen is inconvenient. Reset and reinstall decisions are much easier to reverse when you have a recent backup, application installers and license details. A BitLocker key is especially important if the drive is moved to another computer or WinRE needs to unlock it offline.

Which fix should you try first?

Option Best match Personal files What changes Needs BitLocker key?
Startup Repair Unknown startup cause; first automated attempt Designed to leave them in place Checks and repairs common startup components automatically Possibly
Uninstall Updates Boot failure began after a recent quality or feature update Preserved Removes the selected recent Windows update Possibly
System Restore Recent driver, application or settings change and an available restore point Personal files remain Rolls system files, registry settings and installed programs back to a restore point Possibly
Reset this PC — Keep my files Windows remains unbootable after less disruptive options Personal files retained; apps and settings removed Reinstalls Windows using the reset workflow Possibly
Reset this PC — Remove everything Ready to erase the device or preparing it for another owner Removed Removes personal files, apps and settings and reinstalls Windows Possibly
Installation or OEM recovery media WinRE is unavailable or its options fail Depends on the chosen installation path Repairs, resets or reinstalls from external media; manufacturer media may add device-specific drivers and factory software Often

The sequence below is deliberately ordered from least disruptive to most disruptive. Stop when the computer starts normally; do not run every option “just in case.” The right branch depends on four facts: whether WinRE opens, what changed recently, whether a restore point or backup exists, and whether you can unlock the Windows volume.

1. Run Startup Repair from Advanced options

Exact path

  1. On the recovery screen, select Advanced options.
  2. Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options.
  3. Choose Startup Repair.
  4. Select the Windows account requested and enter its password if prompted. Supply the BitLocker recovery key if WinRE asks for it.
  5. Allow the scan and restart to finish without powering off the computer.

What to expect

Startup Repair checks common startup files and boot settings and then restarts the computer. A successful repair should take you to the normal Windows sign-in screen. If the same “couldn’t repair your PC” message returns, note any log or explanation shown, but do not infer a specific hardware failure from it. The report can help you decide what to try next, but it is not a complete diagnosis or a guarantee that repeating the scan will produce a different result.

When repeating it is not useful

Running the same automated repair repeatedly rarely adds information. After one unsuccessful attempt, move to the option that corresponds to your recent change. A loop can also be caused by a failed update, a recently installed driver or software, damaged system components, storage errors, or a configuration that Startup Repair cannot resolve.

2. Remove a recent Windows update

When this is the right branch

Choose this path when the first failed boot followed Windows Update, a restart that installed updates, or a feature upgrade. WinRE may offer separate choices for removing the latest quality update and the latest feature update; the labels depend on the Windows version. Match the choice to the timing shown in your update history if you can access that information from another device or a previous note.

Steps

  1. Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
  2. Select Uninstall Updates.
  3. Choose the available update-removal option that matches the timing of the failure.
  4. Confirm the action, provide the requested account credentials or BitLocker key, and let Windows restart.

This reverses the selected update; it does not roll back every driver, application or personal-file change. If Windows starts, pause before immediately reinstalling the same update. Check that your important files are backed up and look for a corrected update through normal Windows maintenance. If update removal is unavailable, that absence is a reason to consider System Restore or external media, not a reason to delete random files from the Windows directory.

3. Use System Restore for a known recent change

What System Restore changes

System Restore returns system files, registry settings and installed programs to the state captured in a restore point. It does not normally remove personal documents, photos or other files in your user folders. A restore point must exist, and the restore point must predate the driver, application or settings change associated with the boot failure.

Steps

  1. From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  2. Choose the affected Windows installation and sign in if prompted.
  3. Select a restore point created before the problem began. Use Scan for affected programs, when shown, to review applications and drivers that will be changed.
  4. Confirm the restore, keep the computer powered, and wait for the restart.

Limitations

System Restore is not a substitute for a file backup and cannot help when no suitable restore point exists. Programs installed after the selected point may be removed, while programs removed after that point may return. If the failure started after an update rather than an application or driver, Uninstall Updates is usually the more targeted first choice. Do not select an old point simply because it is available; choose one that clearly predates the event you are trying to undo.

4. Reset Windows while keeping personal files

When to consider it

Use Reset this PC after Startup Repair, update removal and System Restore are unavailable or unsuccessful, and you have protected important data. Microsoft classifies reset as more disruptive because it removes installed applications and settings even when personal files are retained.

Steps and choices

  1. In WinRE select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  2. Choose Keep my files if you need to preserve files in your user folders. This still removes installed applications and resets settings.
  3. Follow the prompts for the available reinstall source, such as local files or cloud download. Availability depends on the Windows version and device state.
  4. Review the summary, connect power, and start the reset. Do not interrupt it during restarts.

Before starting, record application names, license information and any configuration you will need to recreate. “Keep my files” is not a promise that every location, encrypted file or application data store will survive; make a separate backup whenever possible. The Remove everything choice is broader still: it removes personal files, applications and settings and is appropriate only when you have a verified backup or intend to erase the computer for another owner.

5. Repair or reinstall from external recovery media

When media is necessary

If the internal recovery environment will not start, its options fail, or the Windows installation is too damaged to reset, create Windows installation media on another working computer. A USB flash drive stores the installation files; the drive itself does not automatically repair Windows. You will need a suitable blank drive, a working computer with internet access to create the media, and the affected computer’s boot menu or firmware settings.

Use Microsoft installation media carefully

  1. On the working computer, download the Windows installation-media tool or disk image from Microsoft’s official Windows download pages for the edition you intend to use.
  2. Use the tool to create a bootable USB flash drive. The creation process erases the drive, so copy off anything stored on it first.
  3. Insert the USB into the affected computer and start it. Use the device maker’s documented boot-menu key or firmware instructions to select the USB; the key differs by model.
  4. At Windows Setup, choose Repair your computer to reach WinRE before considering installation. Try Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates or System Restore from this external environment.
  5. If repair options cannot recover the installation, choose a reset or clean installation only after confirming your backup and understanding that installation can remove data.

Manufacturer recovery media can be preferable for a particular laptop or desktop because it may contain hardware-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Microsoft media does not. Obtain model-specific instructions from the device manufacturer rather than guessing BIOS settings or recovery-key combinations. Generic media is useful for reaching repair tools, but it may not recreate the manufacturer’s original software image.

What you need when another computer is required

Plan for three separate items: an unaffected computer that can download and create the media, a blank USB flash drive dedicated to that task, and a way to save or restore the affected computer’s files. The USB is a practical purchase only when you need to create this media; it is not a diagnostic device and does not contain a guaranteed fix until the official media-creation process writes one to it. Keep the installer with the computer only after confirming that it no longer contains unrelated files.

Why common online command recipes are risky here

Forum posts often present BOOTREC, SFC, DISM or CHKDSK commands as a universal solution. WinRE can assign different drive letters from those used by normal Windows, and the correct command, switches and offline-image path depend on the installation, partition layout and boot mode. A command that is harmless on one setup can target the wrong volume on another. The recovery options above are the supported first-line workflow; use advanced commands only with documentation that matches your Windows version and disk configuration, and only after identifying the correct offline Windows volume.

Do not paste a long command list merely because the computer is looping. First determine whether an update removal or restore point addresses the timing of the failure. If you later use an advanced repair procedure, record each command and its result so that a technician can distinguish an unsuccessful repair from an additional change made during troubleshooting.

What the error does not tell you

  • It does not establish that the SSD or hard drive is failing. Storage problems remain possible, but they require separate diagnostics.
  • It does not prove that the boot configuration data is corrupted.
  • It does not prove malware caused the loop.
  • It does not identify which update, driver or application is responsible.
  • It does not provide a repair-success probability. Microsoft’s recovery guidance does not publish a universal success rate for Startup Repair.

If the computer shows clicking noises, disappears from firmware storage listings, repeatedly freezes during recovery, or reports serious hardware errors, stop repeated software repairs and seek hardware diagnostics. Preserve data before replacing a drive or reinstalling Windows. A clean reinstall may hide a failing drive rather than solve it, and it can make later file recovery harder.

Windows 10 support context

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes from Microsoft. This date does not explain an individual Automatic Repair loop, but it matters when deciding whether to restore an old installation or move to a supported Windows release. Confirm your edition and hardware compatibility before upgrading or reinstalling. Do not treat the end-of-support date as evidence that a particular update caused your current failure.

A practical decision checklist

  • No known recent change: run Startup Repair once, then review the other WinRE options rather than repeating it.
  • Failure began immediately after Windows Update: try Uninstall Updates.
  • Failure followed a driver, application or settings change: use a restore point created before that change.
  • WinRE tools fail but personal files are backed up: use Reset this PC, choosing Keep my files only if you accept app and settings removal.
  • WinRE is missing or unusable: create installation media on another computer and select Repair your computer first.
  • Device-specific drivers or factory software are important: check the manufacturer’s recovery-media process.
  • BitLocker is enabled: do not begin a recovery action until you can retrieve the recovery key.
  • The computer is being transferred to someone else: use Remove everything only after verifying that the backup is complete and accessible.

After Windows starts again

Sign in and confirm that your documents, desktop files and required applications are present. Back up important data before making further changes. Record which action fixed the boot problem, install pending updates one at a time when practical, and create a current recovery plan. If the loop returns, the timing of the next failure is valuable evidence: note whether it follows an update, driver installation, shutdown or hardware change before entering WinRE again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you used Reset, expect to reinstall removed applications and reapply settings. If you used System Restore, check that the programs you still need are present and that any security software is current. If you removed an update, monitor the next restart rather than assuming the underlying issue is permanently solved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” prove that my SSD has failed?

No. The message only says that Startup Repair did not correct the startup problem. Storage failure is one possibility, but the wording does not diagnose it. Seek hardware diagnostics if the drive disappears from firmware, makes unusual noises, or produces serious hardware errors.

Should I run Startup Repair repeatedly?

Usually not. Run it once, note any report, and then choose an option that matches the timing of the failure. Repeating the same automated attempt rarely adds useful information.

Which option should I use after a Windows Update?

Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options and try Uninstall Updates when the first failed boot followed an update or feature upgrade. Choose the available quality- or feature-update removal option that matches the timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will System Restore delete my personal files?

System Restore normally leaves personal documents and photos in place while rolling system files, registry settings and installed programs back to a restore point. It requires a suitable restore point, and applications changed after that point may be removed or returned.

What does Reset this PC’s “Keep my files” option preserve?

It is intended to retain personal files, but it removes installed applications and resets settings. Back up important files first because encrypted data, unusual storage locations and application data are not guaranteed to survive.

What if WinRE asks for a BitLocker recovery key?

Find the key before continuing. WinRE may need it to unlock the Windows volume for recovery actions. Do not begin a reset or reinstall without confirming that you can access encrypted files.

Can a USB recovery drive repair Windows automatically?

The USB stores Windows installation media and lets you reach repair tools on a computer whose internal WinRE will not start. It does not repair Windows by itself. At Setup, choose Repair your computer first; reset or reinstall only after considering data consequences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use BOOTREC, SFC, DISM or CHKDSK from WinRE?

Do not treat forum command lists as universal recipes. WinRE drive letters and offline paths can differ, and the correct commands depend on the installation and boot configuration. Use documented procedures that match your Windows version and identify the correct volume first.

When is manufacturer recovery media better than Microsoft media?

A manufacturer image may include hardware-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Microsoft media does not. Follow the device maker’s model-specific instructions instead of guessing firmware keys or recovery procedures.

The Bottom Line

Startup Repair’s failure is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Use WinRE once, match Uninstall Updates or System Restore to the recent change, protect files and the BitLocker key, and reserve Reset or reinstall media for cases where the less disruptive paths fail.
