If text on your OLED gaming monitor has colored edges, first tune Windows ClearType on that display and judge the result at your normal viewing distance. This can improve how text looks, but it is not a guaranteed cure: the visibility of fringing depends partly on the monitor’s pixel density and subpixel layout, as well as your own perception.
What text fringing looks like—and why it happens
Text fringing is a colored edge or outline around letters, often most noticeable on fine text. On an OLED monitor, the appearance can be influenced by how its subpixels are arranged and how densely the pixels are packed. It is not necessarily a sign that the display is damaged.
People can perceive the same layout differently. RTINGS notes that some viewers do not notice fringing during regular use, even on a monitor with a triangular subpixel layout. The effect seen in a magnified image may also be more conspicuous than what you experience from your usual seating position.
Tune ClearType on your Windows PC
Windows includes a text-tuning tool called ClearType. Use it on the OLED monitor where you see the problem, and choose the samples that look clearest to you:
#1 Best Overall
- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey OLED G6 Gaming Monitor is engineered for perfection with a QD-OLED Display featuring QHD resolution made to deliver high brightness and a wide range of colors for gameplay
- OLED Safeguard technology supports performance by actively helping to prevent burn-in with a thermal modulation system
- Glare Free Technology keeps screen clear of reflection from external light sources
- The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes
- In Windows, search for ClearType.
- Open Adjust ClearType text.
- Follow the on-screen steps, selecting the text samples that look best on your monitor.
- Check the result in the apps where you read or work, then assess it from your normal viewing distance.
ClearType’s initial choices correspond to RGB and BGR subpixel assumptions; they do not directly represent every OLED subpixel arrangement. Treat the tuner as a way to find a more comfortable rendering, not as a setting that is known to eliminate fringing on every panel or in every application.
If fringing is still distracting
Check your setup before considering a replacement
Make sure you are judging text at the distance and scale you actually use. Look at several applications rather than relying only on a close-up screenshot: the available evidence does not establish that one ClearType choice will affect every app identically. If you need help narrowing down the cause, note your monitor model, resolution, Windows display scaling, and the apps in which the colored edges are easiest to see.

Compare pixel density and subpixel design when shopping
If you are considering another monitor, compare resolution relative to screen size, which determines pixel density, and look for the manufacturer’s stated subpixel layout or text-rendering features. Higher pixel density can make fringing less visible, but the available evidence gives no numeric threshold that guarantees a particular result. Individual tolerance and normal viewing distance matter too.

Those are manufacturer-described design features, not independent proof that the effect will disappear for every user. ASUS also says that fifth-generation QD-OLED panels used in ROG displays have an optimized RGB subpixel layout intended to enhance text clarity; that statement applies to the generation and products it describes, not to all QD-OLED monitors. What to expect from the fix
Start with the built-in ClearType tuner because it is a practical adjustment to try before replacing hardware. If the text remains uncomfortable, the panel’s pixel density and subpixel layout may be the limiting factors; neither the Windows tuning step nor a manufacturer’s text-clarity feature is established as a universal fix.
