If opponents keep finding passes behind your back line in EA SPORTS FC 26, do not begin by copying a formation or a popular depth value. Diagnose the failure in order: confirm the gameplay mode and tactic that are actually active, check the space in front of your center-backs, inspect defensive-midfielder roles, then adjust line height and your in-match defending one change at a time.

That process matters because FC 26 does not have one defensive setting that works for every formation, mode, or patch. A high line can expose the space behind it, while a very deep line can give the opponent time to build attacks. The right fix is the one that removes the specific space your opponent is using without creating a different one.

Start with the symptom, not a copied tactic

“Why is my defense so open?” usually describes more than one problem. The visible gap may come from the defensive line, a midfielder leaving his zone, an inactive preset, or a rushed tackle that turns a manageable attack into a breakaway. Use the table below to identify the first check.

What you see Most useful first check Adjustment to test
Through balls go straight between your center-backs Look at the space in front of the center-backs and the recovery position of your defensive midfielder. Keep a midfielder screening the central lane; then test a slightly lower line height if the pass is still reaching the space behind.
Wingers receive behind your full-back Check whether the full-back is stepping out alone while the rest of the line stays deep. Delay with jockeying and use the touchline as a boundary instead of diving into an early tackle.
You concede immediately after losing the ball Inspect the active midfield role and the distance between attacking and defensive lines. Replace a role that joins attacks without prioritising defensive work, or use a more conservative instruction in the selected tactic.
Your line is repeatedly caught by runs in behind Confirm the current line-height setting and whether you are relying on an automatic offside step. Lower the line in small increments and defend the runner manually; do not assume the game will push the line up for every offside attempt.
The team feels compact but cannot stop pressure Check whether the line has become so deep that the opponent can pass and turn in front of it. Raise the line slightly or defend the ball carrier earlier while keeping the central screen in place.

Work through the checks in that order. Changing formation, line height, midfielder role and pressing behaviour at once makes it impossible to tell which change helped.

1. Confirm the mode and the tactic that is actually active

Competitive and Authentic gameplay are different contexts

FC 26 separates Competitive gameplay, aimed mainly at online modes such as Ultimate Team and Clubs, from Authentic gameplay, which is the default for Manager and Player Career and can also be selected in Kick Off. A tactic that feels safe in a slower, more simulation-oriented Career match may leave too much space in an online Competitive match, where transitions are faster and opponents attack the space immediately.

Before changing settings, write down the mode in which the problem occurs. If the issue appears only online, diagnose it using the Competitive context rather than assuming that a Career solution will transfer unchanged. If it appears in Career or an Authentic Kick Off match, assess the same shape under that gameplay preset. EA’s FC Gameplay Team notes describe these presets as separate contexts, not as a universal ruleset.

Verify the highlighted preset in the match

Open the pause menu and the in-match Tactics or Team Management screen, then verify which tactic is highlighted. Many players edit a saved preset and continue playing with a different preset still selected. Check the formation, roles, instructions and line height of the tactic shown as active during the match; do not rely on the name of the preset you intended to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check whether a tactical change is scheduled for another game state, such as when you are leading or chasing the match. If the exposed shape appears only after a goal, late in the match, or after a manual switch, inspect that state rather than the default tactic.

2. Find the missing midfield screen

Protect the area in front of the center-backs

A defensive midfielder should give you a first defender between the ball and the center-backs. When that player is marking high, joining attacks or standing beside the opponent’s midfielders instead of screening the central lane, a forward can receive facing goal or release a through ball before your center-backs can step out.

Watch the moment you lose possession. If the nearest central midfielder is already beyond the ball and both center-backs are exposed to a forward run, the immediate issue is transition protection, not necessarily the formation itself. Delay with the remaining midfielder, recover the closest player toward the middle and avoid pulling a center-back out to chase the ball carrier unless the passing lane is covered.

Audit the Box Crasher role

EA specifically describes Box Crasher as a defensive-midfielder role that joins attacks, is slow to return to defensive duties and does not prioritise defensive actions. That makes it a poor first choice when your recurring failure is an unprotected center-back area. The role can be useful when you deliberately want extra runs into the box, but those runs have a defensive cost during the next transition.

If you are using Box Crasher and conceding through balls after losing possession, test a role that stays connected to the defense. Keep the rest of the tactic unchanged for several matches or training segments so you can see whether the central gap disappears. If the problem remains, then examine line height and individual positioning rather than stacking more attacking roles on top of the same weakness.

Use the tactical breakdown as an audit, not a verdict

FC 26’s tactical breakdown presents broad dimensions including Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance. Use those categories to ask why the selected tactic behaves as it does. A tactic can look aggressive in Attack while its Defence and Length settings leave a large distance between the midfield screen and the back line.

The chart helps you identify trade-offs; it does not declare a best formation. A high attacking contribution, wide spacing or long team length may be exactly what you want when chasing a goal and exactly what you do not want while protecting a lead. Compare the breakdown of your normal tactic with the state in which the goals occur, then change the smallest relevant factor.

3. Adjust defensive line height to the failure you can see

Why a high line is vulnerable

A high line compresses the opponent’s room to receive the ball in front of you and can support aggressive pressure. Its cost is the space behind the defenders. If your midfield pressure is beaten or a center-back steps out at the wrong time, one forward pass can put a runner into that space.

FC 26’s official gameplay notes state that “the defensive line will not automatically push up as far when trying to keep players offside.” This version-specific change means you should not expect an automatic, maximum step-up to rescue every offside attempt. Manual positioning, the timing of pressure and the distance between your lines still matter.

Why a very deep line is also vulnerable

Dropping too far protects the grass behind the defense but gives the opponent time to receive, turn and choose a pass. Your midfielders may be forced to defend for long periods, and a striker can combine at the top of the penalty area without being pressured. If opponents are not running behind you but are repeatedly passing around you, the line may be too deep for the way you defend.

Change one setting, then observe the same pattern

There is no evidence for one ideal numeric line height across every FC 26 formation, mode and patch. Move the setting in a small step toward the problem you identified: slightly lower when runners are consistently reaching the space behind, or slightly higher when the opponent can build unchallenged in front of you. Leave roles and width alone for the first test.

Play enough possessions to see the same type of attack again. A single goal is not a reliable evaluation: it may come from a deflection, a missed tackle or a one-off manual error. Remember that tactics codes can store Line Height

EA says Line Height is saved in tactics codes. When importing or sharing a code, inspect the stored line-height value instead of assuming that the code contains only formation and player roles. A code can silently restore the depth that caused your problem. After loading one, verify the active tactic and its line height in the in-match menu.

4. Defend transitions by delaying the attack

Use the first defender to buy time

When possession changes, the goal of the nearest defender is often to slow the attack long enough for teammates to recover. FourFourTwo’s FC 26 defending guide recommends measured pressure rather than charging at every ball. Approach under control, keep the attacker moving away from the most dangerous lane and wait for support before committing.

This is especially important when your line is high. A sprinting defender who misses the ball can remove the only player between the carrier and the goalkeeper. If the carrier has no immediate forward option, contain the player and use the time to restore the midfield screen.

Keep the CDM between the ball and the goal

During a counterattack, switch first to the midfielder who can block the central pass when that player is available. Hold the lane in front of the center-backs rather than following a harmless sideways run. The attacker may still pass wide, but the most damaging through ball becomes harder to play while your other players recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that midfielder is repeatedly out of position because of an attacking role, return to the role audit in the previous section. Manual defending cannot fully compensate for a tactic that sends its only screen into the box on every attack.

Jockey wide attackers instead of tackling immediately

Against a winger, FourFourTwo advises using the full-back to jockey and contain rather than rushing into an early tackle. Guide the attacker toward the sideline, keep a safe distance and wait for a heavy touch or a supporting defender. A missed tackle opens the channel behind the full-back; containment keeps the attack in front of you.

This is practical secondary guidance, not a guarantee from EA that one defensive action always wins the duel. 5. Match the fix to the kind of space being created

Decision Benefit Risk Use it when
Higher line height Less room for the opponent to receive and turn in front of midfield. More space for runs behind if pressure is bypassed. You can delay the ball carrier and your center-backs recover reliably.
Lower line height Smaller space behind the defense. More room for combinations and shots in front of the box. Opponents are repeatedly releasing runners with one pass.
Defensive midfield screen Blocks central passes and buys time after turnovers. Fewer late attacking runs and potentially less presence in the box. Your center-backs are exposed immediately after losing possession.
Attacking midfield role such as Box Crasher Extra movement and numbers in the attack. Slower recovery and fewer defensive actions from that player. You accept transition risk and have another player covering centrally.
Patient jockeying Preserves shape and encourages a mistake or backward pass. Allows the opponent a little time on the ball. A teammate is recovering or the attacker is near the touchline.
Immediate tackle or aggressive press Can win the ball quickly and stop a developing move. A miss removes the defender and opens a lane. The touch is loose, support is behind you and the recovery risk is low.

None of these options is universally superior. The trade-off is always between space behind the line and pressure on the ball, between midfield protection and extra attacking runs, and between patient containment and an early attempt to win possession.

6. Troubleshoot the most common exposed-defense patterns

“I concede through balls even with two center-backs back”

  1. Pause immediately after a failed attack and inspect the position of the defensive midfielder at the turnover.
  2. Check whether the Box Crasher role or another attacking assignment has left the central lane empty.
  3. Keep one midfielder in front of the center-backs for the next test.
  4. If the lane is still open, lower line height slightly and observe whether the runner now receives earlier or later.
  5. Defend the next transition by delaying the carrier instead of selecting a center-back and pulling him out.

“My defenders are compact, but the opponent passes around them”

  1. Look at where the opponent receives the ball: in front of your line, not behind it.
  2. Raise line height a small amount or pressure the receiver with a midfielder while keeping central cover.
  3. Use the tactical breakdown to check whether excessive defensive depth or team length is separating midfield from defense.
  4. Reassess after several comparable possessions rather than judging the change from one attack.

“My full-back is beaten every time on the wing”

  1. Use the full-back to jockey and keep the winger outside.
  2. Do not commit to a tackle while the attacker still has a controlled touch and a clear inside lane.
  3. Check whether your central midfielder can cover the cutback or inside pass.
  4. If the full-back is stepping out while the center-back is also chasing, restore the line before challenging.

“The problem appears only in one game state”

  1. Identify whether it occurs with your default tactic, a lead-protection tactic or a chasing-the-game tactic.
  2. Verify that the selected state has the intended midfielder role and line height.
  3. Compare its tactical breakdown with the state that feels stable.
  4. Change only the state that produces the exposed shape; do not weaken every tactic because of one situation.

7. A repeatable review routine

  1. Name the mode: record whether the match uses Competitive or Authentic gameplay and whether it is online, Career or Kick Off.
  2. Freeze the variables: select one active tactic and leave formation, width and roles unchanged while diagnosing line height.
  3. Watch the turnover: note which player is closest to the ball, where the defensive midfielder is and how much space separates midfield from the center-backs.
  4. Choose one intervention: change the midfield role, line height or defensive behaviour, but not all three at once.
  5. Replay the pattern: continue until you see several transitions of the same type, then compare the location and quality of the chances.
  6. Use the breakdown: inspect Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance for a structural explanation of the result.
  7. Check after updates: gameplay balance can change with patches, so a setting that worked previously may need to be re-evaluated.

This routine prevents a misleading conclusion such as “the formation is broken” when the actual cause is an inactive preset or a midfielder who never returns. It also prevents the opposite mistake: lowering the line repeatedly when the opponent is actually receiving freely in front of it.

What FC 26’s defensive changes mean in practice

EA’s FC Gameplay Team—Keegan Sabatino, Gigo Navarro and Thomas Caleffi—documents two details that are directly relevant to exposed defenses. First, the defensive line “will not automatically push up as far when trying to keep players offside.” Second, defenders are adjusted to man-mark opponents when they are close and inside the box. These are version-specific gameplay notes, not a promise that every manual run or offside situation will be handled automatically.

In practical terms, keep watching the runner and the ball rather than assuming an automatic step-up will erase the space. Inside the box, expect defenders to engage nearby attackers more directly; outside it, your own positioning, midfield cover and line-height choice still determine how much room the opponent can attack.

When to stop changing the tactic

Stop editing when the original failure no longer appears consistently and the remaining goals come from different, isolated mistakes. Every defensive compromise has a cost: a deeper line concedes territory, a screening midfielder reduces attacking numbers, and patient jockeying may allow a backward pass instead of an immediate regain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you keep changing settings after the shape is stable, you may trade a solved through-ball problem for a new problem in front of the box. Keep the tactic, improve the timing of the first defender and review again only when the same pattern returns across multiple matches or after a gameplay update.
