If a Steam Deck game freezes or loses sound after waking, first update SteamOS, restart the Deck, and test again. For missing sound, check the selected audio output; for a freeze in only one game, troubleshoot that game before changing system recovery settings. These steps apply generally to both LCD and OLED models, but Valve does not identify one universal cause or guaranteed fix for resume problems.
Start with updates and a restart
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Restart from Steam > Power > Restart.
- After the Deck starts again, launch the affected game, suspend the system, and resume to see whether the problem returns.
Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether the issue persists. Valve’s general guidance for LCD and OLED models recommends updates and a restart as basic troubleshooting steps. Valve’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide
Close third-party Desktop Mode apps
If restarting does not help, temporarily exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, especially tools that can affect games or SteamOS. Restart and test resume again. This is an isolation step: it can help determine whether an added application is involved, but it does not establish that such an app is the cause. Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide
Fix audio that disappears after resume
Check where sound is being sent
If the built-in speakers are silent, check for connected Bluetooth, USB-C, or 3.5 mm audio devices. A docked TV or monitor may also be receiving audio. Disconnect or disable those devices, select another output, then return to the default speakers. Restart if sound is still missing. Valve’s audio troubleshooting guidance

Reconnect a Bluetooth device
Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and the headset or speaker is in pairing mode. If a device that was paired before will not reconnect, forget it on the Deck and pair it again. Valve notes that some third-party audio devices may not work properly with SteamOS, so test the built-in speakers or another output to distinguish a device-specific issue from broader audio loss. Troubleshoot a freeze in one game
Check compatibility and game requirements
Look up the game’s Deck Verified category and its requirements on the Steam Store page. If other games resume normally, focus on the affected title rather than assuming the entire Steam Deck is at fault. Compatibility information can help set expectations, but it does not prove why a particular game freezes after resume. Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide

Try game-level adjustments
- Make sure the game is up to date.
- For a Steam game with instability, try the latest Proton compatibility tool when appropriate.
- Reduce the game’s graphics settings and test suspend and resume again.
These are Valve’s general suggestions for game instability, not a symptom-specific guarantee. If the game still fails, consult SteamOS or Steam Deck discussions, or contact Steam Support. Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide

If the issue persists after updating and restarting, Valve suggests trying Beta Participation as a possible troubleshooting step. Open Settings > System > Beta Participation and follow the on-screen options. Beta software may include a relevant change, but Valve’s guidance does not establish that a beta version fixes this particular resume symptom. Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide

Reserve recovery options for persistent, broader problems
Recovery is a later step, especially when only one game has trouble. Valve distinguishes rollback, which can return to a previous known-good SteamOS version while retaining user data, from repair and more destructive options. Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content; re-imaging or factory reset clears local content. Before any operation that may erase data, back up or otherwise account for local files. Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guide

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Whether one game or multiple games freeze or lose audio.
- Whether sound is absent only from the built-in speakers or also from headphones.
- Whether Bluetooth, USB-C audio, a headset jack, dock, TV, or monitor is connected.
- Whether third-party Desktop Mode applications are installed.
- Whether the Deck is LCD or OLED, along with the SteamOS version and update channel.
Valve’s published guidance does not name a universal resume bug or identify one SteamOS version as the cause, and it provides no rate for how often these symptoms occur. Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide · Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide
