If a smart-home device won’t connect, first identify where the failure is: the device’s power or pairing mode, the phone and setup app, the Wi-Fi network or router, or a voice-assistant integration. Check these in order before factory-resetting the device. The right Wi-Fi band and settings vary by model, so use the device maker’s instructions rather than assuming every smart device needs 2.4 GHz.

Identify what is failing

Start by noting which situation you have. A new device that cannot be found during setup needs different checks from one that used to work and is now offline. A device that works in its manufacturer’s app but not in Alexa or Google Home points to a different problem again.

  • New device is not found: Check its power and pairing mode, then the setup app, phone permissions, and discovery conditions.
  • Device is found but will not join Wi-Fi: Check the password, supported Wi-Fi band, signal, and router settings.
  • Device appears offline after working: Check whether it is still powered and connected, then test control in its manufacturer’s app.
  • Manufacturer’s app works but a voice assistant does not: Investigate the assistant’s skill or integration rather than resetting the device’s Wi-Fi.

Google and Amazon both identify device state, setup conditions, internet access, and network configuration as possible causes of pairing or connection problems. Google’s pairing guidance and Amazon’s Alexa connection guidance for the UK describe checks for their respective setups.

Check power, pairing mode, and internet access

For a new setup, confirm the device is plugged in or charged and is in the pairing mode specified for that model. For a device that dropped offline, check its power and status indicators before changing network settings. Make sure another phone or computer can access the internet over your home network; this helps separate a device-specific issue from a broader internet outage.

Open the manufacturer’s app and check whether it reports a setup prompt, connection status, or specific error. If you are adding the device to a voice assistant, establish whether the manufacturer’s app can control it first. That result helps determine whether to focus on the device’s network path or the assistant integration.

Refresh the phone and app setup path

  1. Close and reopen the setup app. If discovery still fails, restart the smart device and try again; Google recommends restarting the device and app and allowing time for discovery in its Seamless Setup troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi password carefully, including capitalization and any characters that are easy to confuse.
  3. Enable Bluetooth and the permissions the app needs to discover and configure nearby devices. On iPhone, check Local Network access for the app where relevant; permission names and paths can vary by operating-system version.
  4. For Google Home or Nest setup, Google advises connecting the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the device and turning off cellular data during setup. See Google’s pairing troubleshooting steps.
  5. If the app still cannot complete setup, restart the phone. Restart the modem or router only if other checks point to a network problem; router restart steps differ by equipment.

Verify the device’s Wi-Fi band and router settings

Look up the exact model’s supported Wi-Fi bands in its manual or compatibility information. Some smart-home Wi-Fi products support only 2.4 GHz; others support more than one band. Do not assume that a phone and device must always use the same band or that all products require 2.4 GHz. Google, for example, recommends trying both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for its speakers and displays, while also describing 2.4 GHz as a setup option for some devices. Consult Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Seamless Setup troubleshooting for those product-specific cases.

If the device is 2.4-GHz-only, confirm that the router’s 2.4 GHz network is enabled and follow the maker’s instructions for connecting it. If setup depends on selecting a particular network name, make sure you choose the intended home network rather than a guest network or a similarly named network.

A correct password does not guarantee that devices can communicate with one another locally. Guest-network restrictions or access point (AP) and client isolation can prevent discovery or local control. Google lists guest mode and AP isolation among settings to check when its devices cannot communicate as expected. Router labels and controls vary, so use the router maker’s manual or contact your internet provider instead of changing unrelated security settings.

Improve signal and account for the connection type

During setup, place the device and phone nearer the router and retry. A weak signal can make onboarding unreliable even when the network works elsewhere. Avoid locations with obstacles or sources of interference identified in the device maker’s instructions. Philips Hue, for example, recommends adequate router coverage and avoiding large metal objects or strong radio sources around Hue devices or the Bridge in its US Hue connection FAQ.

Not every smart-home product connects directly to Wi-Fi. Matter, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and hub- or bridge-based products have different setup paths and range considerations. Amazon’s Alexa guidance gives proximity advice for supported Matter, Zigbee, and Bluetooth equipment; those distances should not be applied as a universal Wi-Fi rule. Check Amazon’s UK device-connection guidance for the supported connection types it covers.

For a hub or bridge system

Troubleshoot the hub’s connection to the router separately from the connection between the hub and its endpoint devices. Philips Hue’s US FAQ describes the Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro as part of its system and specifies Ethernet to the router as its standard Bridge setup, with the Hue app on the same Wi-Fi network. Verify your exact Hue hardware and current instructions before applying that setup to another system; a bridge-based product may not put each bulb directly on Wi-Fi.

Use a hotspot as a diagnostic, not a permanent fix

If the device maker supports it, you can try setting up the device temporarily on a phone hotspot. If it connects there but not to home Wi-Fi, the home router, its configuration, or the internet-provider path becomes the likelier place to investigate. If it also fails on the hotspot, focus on the device, pairing process, or app support.

This test is not definitive: Google says hotspot use is not fully supported, and availability depends on mobile coverage and plan. Treat the result as a clue, not proof that the device will work reliably on a hotspot or that the router is the only cause. See Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page.

Separate Wi-Fi trouble from a voice-assistant problem

Try controlling the device in its manufacturer’s app. If that works but Alexa cannot control the device, check whether the relevant Alexa skill is enabled and linked to the correct manufacturer account; relink or rediscover the device using the maker’s and Amazon’s instructions. If the manufacturer’s app cannot control it either, troubleshoot the device’s power, Wi-Fi, and internet connection first.

Amazon’s UK support pages distinguish Wi-Fi connectivity checks from Alexa control problems. Use Amazon’s smart-home Wi-Fi checks for connection status and its Alexa control troubleshooting for devices Alexa cannot operate. If your device works in its native app but not in Google Home, follow the integration and linking instructions for the specific manufacturer and Google Home setup.

Factory-reset only after simpler checks

A reset can erase setup and pairing information without resolving a router or integration problem. Try the power, app, band, signal, and network checks first. If those fail, follow the reset instructions for the exact model; button combinations and reset behavior differ by product.

After a reset, put the device into pairing mode and complete the manufacturer’s setup flow before reconnecting a third-party assistant if the maker requires that order. A factory reset may not remove the device from every app: Google says its Seamless Setup devices are not automatically removed from the Google Home app by resetting. Check the app and remove a stale entry if the model’s instructions call for it. See Google’s Seamless Setup troubleshooting page.

What to give support if it still will not connect

When contacting the device maker, router maker, internet provider, or platform support, provide details that help distinguish the failing layer:

  • Device make, exact model, and connection type if known.
  • Setup app and phone operating-system version.
  • Router model and firmware version, if available.
  • Whether other devices can use the home internet.
  • The exact error message and whether the device is new, newly offline, or only missing from a voice assistant.
  • Whether the manufacturer’s app can control it and whether a supported hotspot test succeeds.

For a specific Google Nest product or error code, use its dedicated support path. For router-specific settings, consult the router manufacturer or internet provider; menu names and available controls vary by equipment.
