First identify what has failed: a new accessory that will not pair, one manufacturer’s accessories showing “No Response,” accessories from several makers, or a Thread setup that requests a border router. That distinction points to the right checks and helps avoid resetting devices unnecessarily.

Start by identifying the problem

  • New accessory will not pair: Check compatibility, required hardware and the accessory’s setup instructions.
  • “No Response” for one maker: Start with that manufacturer’s app, firmware and accessories.
  • “No Response” across several makers: Look for a shared issue with Wi-Fi, Apple-device software, Bluetooth, a hub or network security software.
  • “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”: Confirm whether the accessory requires Thread and whether a compatible Thread border router is already available.

Apple’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes between one maker’s accessories failing and failures across several makers. Apple’s connection troubleshooting steps and its add-accessory guidance cover different parts of the process.

If a new accessory will not pair

Check support and setup requirements

Confirm that the accessory supports Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter, and follow its manual. Some accessories need a firmware update, setup in the manufacturer’s app, or additional hardware such as a bridge. Apple says to use an iPhone or iPad to add an accessory; its current support article says a Mac cannot add one. Requirements can change, so check Apple’s current guidance and the accessory’s documentation for your model and software version.

Check the basics before retrying

  • Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad you are using to pair the accessory.
  • Connect that device to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories while troubleshooting locally.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placing the accessory in pairing mode and completing setup.

Match the alert to the next step

If Home reports “Unable to add to home” or “Accessory Already Added,” consult Apple’s add-accessory troubleshooting guide and the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid assuming these alerts have the same cause; follow the steps for the exact message and accessory.

If an accessory shows “No Response”

Check whether the problem affects accessories from one manufacturer or several. That determines whether to focus first on the maker’s equipment or on shared home-network conditions.

Only one manufacturer is affected

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the Apple device used to control the accessories.
  2. Restart the affected accessories. For battery-powered devices, remove and reinsert the batteries if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s app and check for accessory firmware updates.
  4. Restart any third-party bridge used by those accessories, then restart the relevant Apple home hub.
  5. If the issue remains, remove the accessory from Home, follow the manufacturer’s specific reset instructions, and add it again. If it still fails, contact the accessory maker.

Reset steps differ by product, so use the maker’s directions rather than a generic button sequence. See Apple’s steps for an unresponsive HomeKit or Matter accessory.

Several manufacturers are affected

  2. Connect the Apple device to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories, and turn on Bluetooth.
  3. Restart the affected accessories and check each manufacturer’s app for firmware updates.
  4. If Thread accessories are affected, disconnect them from power for 5 minutes, reconnect them, and wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize before checking again. These are Apple’s recommended troubleshooting intervals, not accessory performance guarantees.
  5. If the problem continues, restart the modem and router, third-party bridges, Apple home hubs, accessories and the controlling Apple device.
  6. Check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering with network connections.

For remote control of accessories, Apple says, “To control your accessories remotely, you must set up a home hub.” The same-network check above is for local troubleshooting. Follow Apple’s complete multi-accessory troubleshooting sequence.

If setup says “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”

These alerts indicate that the accessory being set up requires a Thread border router. Check the accessory’s requirements and see whether your home already has a compatible Thread-capable device before buying anything.

If the home hub or Wi-Fi seems to be the shared problem

Focus on the hub’s connection when the hub itself is failing or the Home app reports a hub network problem; weak Wi-Fi is not an explanation for every accessory fault. Apple’s HomePod troubleshooting guidance recommends moving a HomePod closer to the router if its Wi-Fi connection is weak, reducing possible sources of wireless interference, and restarting it using Apple’s instructions.

When to remove or reset an accessory

Removal and factory reset are later steps, not the first response to a connection problem. Try the relevant maker-specific, software and network checks first. If you do need to reset, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then add the accessory to Home again. Contact the maker if the accessory still will not connect after those steps.
