A router that supports a new Wi-Fi standard cannot make every part of your connection equally fast. Your internet plan, modem, router placement, walls, interference, household traffic and the Wi-Fi hardware in each device all affect the result. Test before changing settings or buying equipment: comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and checking more than one device and location, can show where the slowdown starts.
First, find out where the slowdown is
Ofcom cautions that “A slow Wi-Fi test does not always mean there is a fault with your broadband line.” A speed test measures the path from a particular device, over its current connection, to a test server; it does not isolate the router by itself. Ofcom recommends testing more than once, and Google notes that server location and congestion can change results.
Record a useful baseline
Run a few tests before making changes. Record the time, device, whether it is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the room, and whether other devices are streaming, downloading or backing up files. Test both near the router and in the room where Wi-Fi is poor. Compare like with like, and do not treat one result as conclusive.

Check whether one device or all devices are affected
If just one phone or computer is slow, check that device’s software, Wi-Fi connection and wireless capability. A new router cannot upgrade an older adapter or remove a device-specific problem. If several devices are slow, compare wired and wireless results and continue checking the router, modem and service.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
When possible, connect a computer to the router with an Ethernet cable and run a comparable speed test. Ethernet bypasses the wireless link, making it a useful way to distinguish Wi-Fi conditions from problems elsewhere in the connection.
- Ethernet is good, Wi-Fi is slow: Focus on router placement, signal, interference, congestion or the affected device’s wireless capability.
- Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow: The issue may be the broadband service, plan, modem, router or upstream equipment. A wired result alone does not identify which one.
TP-Link also describes testing a computer directly through the modem to help separate router trouble from a modem or ISP issue. Do this only if your provider’s instructions allow it, and follow its directions for reconnecting the modem.

Improve the wireless signal before changing settings
Wi-Fi performance depends on the path between the router and each device. Distance, walls and other obstacles can weaken the signal, so a router’s advertised standard or maximum capability does not guarantee the same speed in every room.
Choose a better router location
- Place the router in an open, roughly central spot serving the areas where you use Wi-Fi.
- Keep it elevated rather than on the floor.
- Move it away from thick walls, bookcases, fish tanks and other obstacles.
- Keep it away from potential sources of interference, including microwaves and some cordless devices.
After moving it, repeat tests in the same locations and on the same devices as your baseline. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.

Check household traffic, bands and channel congestion
Look for other activity using the connection
Downloads, video streams, backups and other active devices share network capacity. If slowdowns coincide with heavy use, retest when that activity stops. A busy household can affect performance even when the router and broadband connection are otherwise working.
Compare available Wi-Fi bands
A compatible device on a less congested or higher-frequency band may reach speeds unavailable to a device using 2.4 GHz. But range and obstacles matter: switching bands does not always help, especially in a distant room or through several walls. Compare performance where you actually use the device.

Change channels only when there is evidence of congestion
Crowded channels can reduce performance, but there is no channel number or channel width that is best in every home. Microsoft also notes that some older adapters or drivers can have problems with 40 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz. Check local performance first, and consult the router maker’s instructions for model-specific settings rather than applying a universal recommendation.

Know when to contact your ISP or consider mesh
Contact your ISP if wired tests are also slow
If a wired test is consistently slow as well as Wi-Fi, ask your provider to check for an outage or local service issue, a plan limitation, or a line or modem problem. The comparison narrows the investigation but does not prove which part is at fault.
Consider mesh for a verified coverage gap
If wired service is satisfactory and Wi-Fi remains weak in a distant room after improving router placement, a mesh system may help extend coverage. Ofcom describes mesh as additional boxes placed around the home that connect to the existing router. It is not a fix for slow ISP service or a client device that cannot use the available Wi-Fi capabilities.
Before choosing a system, check the problem it is meant to solve, where its points can be placed to communicate reliably, and whether your devices and internet service can use the capabilities you would be paying for. Compare the cost of the complete system and any additional nodes, and confirm compatibility with your router and provider. The cited guidance establishes that mesh can extend coverage and that placement matters; it does not establish a ranking of particular products.
