Before changing Wi-Fi 7 settings or buying a mesh node, find out whether the fault is your internet service, a wired connection, one device, or wireless coverage. Compare results on multiple devices, test near the router and in the problem room, and use Ethernet if available. The pattern points to the next useful fix.

1. Find out what is slow

Start by noting whether the issue affects one device or several, whether it happens everywhere or only in particular rooms, and whether it is constant or intermittent. Run comparable speed tests near the router and in the problem area. If possible, also test over Ethernet.

  • Wi-Fi is slow but Ethernet is healthy: investigate coverage, band selection, interference, or the affected device.
  • Ethernet is slow too: check the internet service, modem, router’s WAN link, cable or port, and the computer’s Ethernet adapter before tuning Wi-Fi.
  • Only one device is affected: look at that device’s Wi-Fi support, drivers or operating-system updates, and compatibility with the router’s band and security settings.
  • Several devices disconnect together: check router status or logs and the modem/ISP connection; note when the failures occur.

One speed test cannot establish the cause: results vary with the service plan, test server, time, device, and connection path. Repeat tests under similar conditions and record the device, location, and connection type. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the ISP delivers the expected speed at the modem and verifying the client adapter’s capability and physical link speed: TP-Link Wi-Fi 7 Router and Deco FAQ.

2. Check the Wi-Fi band and device compatibility

Try a band the client supports, then compare reliability near the router and in the affected room. In general, 2.4 GHz reaches farther through a home than 5 GHz or 6 GHz. The higher bands can be useful at shorter range, but walls and distance may weaken them more. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance describes the shorter range and weaker wall penetration of 5 GHz and 6 GHz: Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout.

A Wi-Fi 7 router can serve older clients, but those devices do not gain 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7 features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) unless they support them. If a particular older or IoT device repeatedly disconnects, check both its documentation and the router manual for a vendor-supported compatibility option. Change one setting at a time, note the original value, and reverse the change if it does not help. Splitting network names or disabling band steering is not a universal fix.

3. Improve router placement

When practical, put the main router in an open, central spot, elevated and away from enclosed cabinets, large obstructions, and metal objects. Retest the same locations after moving it so you can tell whether the change helped. Microsoft’s layout guidance also notes metal objects as a possible interference consideration.

If you use mesh, run the system’s placement test or app diagnostic if available. Google recommends using a mesh test to confirm point placement: Google Home and Nest Help: troubleshoot slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi. A mesh point needs a useful connection to the router or another point; putting it deep inside the dead zone may leave it with a weak backhaul and fail to improve service there.

4. Check firmware, interference, and traffic settings

Look up the support page for your exact router model and hardware revision, and check whether its firmware is current. Router menus and available features vary by model, firmware, and region, so use the manufacturer’s manual for the exact controls rather than applying a setting copied from another router.

If performance varies or connections drop, use the router’s supported diagnostics to check for channel interference. Linksys includes firmware and Wi-Fi channel-interference checks in its mesh troubleshooting guidance: Linksys: Fix Slow WiFi or Internet Speed on Your Linksys Mesh Network. TP-Link also recommends checking QoS settings when speed is below expectations: TP-Link Wi-Fi 7 Router and Deco FAQ. Do not assume one channel, channel width, DFS setting, or QoS configuration is best for every router or region.

If every device drops at once, check router and modem status and record the times and test results before contacting your ISP or router maker. For a single affected client, check its Wi-Fi driver or operating-system support and confirm that its supported band and security mode match the network.

5. Treat Wi-Fi 7 and MLO as compatibility-dependent

Wi-Fi 7 capabilities depend on support at both ends of the connection. MLO is not automatically faster or more reliable in every home, and some features also depend on compatible firmware. TP-Link documents compatibility and firmware dependencies for MLO and mixed mesh systems in its Wi-Fi 7 Router and Deco FAQ. ASUS cautions that MLO may cause compatibility issues with existing AiMesh nodes that do not support it: ASUS: What is MLO and how it works?.

If one client has trouble while other devices work, test a normal network name or a compatibility mode recommended by your router maker, if available. Check the manual for your router and client before changing MLO or mesh settings.

6. Decide whether to add equipment

Consider additional equipment only after the tests point to a coverage problem: the wired internet is healthy, multiple devices struggle in particular rooms, and placement and software checks have not resolved it. A compatible mesh node or system may help, but confirm support for your exact equipment and place the node where it still receives a good connection. Google’s placement guidance recommends checking mesh point placement with its mesh test: Google Home and Nest Help.

If tests instead reveal a wired-link limitation, choose cable and equipment according to the endpoint port speeds and the service or application. TP-Link recommends Cat 6 or above for speeds above gigabit; Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for internet speeds above 100 Mbps. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that replacing a cable will improve Wi-Fi. A Cat 6 cable can support wired testing or suitable backhaul, but it does not itself fix a wireless dead zone.
