A slow VPN is not automatically a slow VPN provider. Compare your connection with the VPN off, then test a nearby server, another protocol your app supports, and your local network. This sequence helps identify the bottleneck before you change security settings or buy hardware; it cannot guarantee a speed increase.
1. Compare your speed with the VPN off and on
Start with a baseline. Disconnect the VPN, run a speed test, and note the download speed, upload speed, and latency if shown. Then connect to the VPN and repeat under similar conditions.
For a useful comparison, keep the device, Wi-Fi or wired connection, test service, and approximate time the same. Record the test endpoint if the service displays it. A different endpoint, changing network conditions, or other people using the connection can skew the comparison. Private Internet Access recommends testing without the VPN first; if that result is already slow, investigate your internet connection or contact your ISP (Private Internet Access support).

2. Test a nearby VPN server
Choose a server close to your physical location, run the test, and compare it with another nearby location. A longer route can add latency, and server load can affect performance. Neither a close location nor a provider’s load indicator guarantees a faster result; routes and loads can change over time. Keep the rest of your test conditions consistent. If one nearby server performs better, that is evidence about your connection at that time—not a promise that it will always be the fastest.
3. Compare protocols your VPN actually offers
If your VPN app has a protocol selector, try another supported option and repeat the same test. Protocol behavior depends on the provider, device, and network, so there is no universal fastest setting. Proton explains that protocol choices involve trade-offs in speed, security, and stability (Proton VPN support).

There is a narrower router-specific exception: for OpenVPN configured on a router, Private Internet Access recommends UDP when possible and notes TCP may help on restricted networks (Private Internet Access router guidance). Do not apply that advice as a blanket rule to other protocols or setups, and do not select an option your app does not provide.
4. Check Wi-Fi and other network use
To see whether the local network is limiting the test, move closer to the router or compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection, if available. An Ethernet cable is optional: it is useful for this comparison, but it cannot fix a slow ISP connection or a poor route to a remote VPN server. Proton recommends a wired connection or moving closer to the router when troubleshooting VPN use over Wi-Fi (Proton VPN support).

Also pause large downloads or temporarily disconnect other devices, then repeat the test. If speeds improve, shared network demand may be affecting the results. For a VPN running on a router, note how many devices are using that VPN connection.
5. Check the router if it runs the VPN
A router-based VPN makes the router handle VPN processing for connected devices, so hardware limits can matter. Check CPU and memory use under load if the router’s interface provides those figures. If practical, compare the same VPN on a computer or phone running its own VPN app, using similar test conditions.

Private Internet Access says router VPN results vary with hardware, firmware, protocol, server distance, and internet connection. It also advises considering an upgrade if CPU or memory is consistently maxed out. Treat that as a conditional option, not a routine fix: first establish that the VPN is running on the router and that its resources are constrained (Private Internet Access router guidance). GL.iNet likewise identifies router hardware as one factor in VPN speed (GL.iNet support).
6. Contact the right support team with useful details
If your non-VPN baseline is slow, contact your ISP. If it is fast but the VPN remains slow after testing nearby servers and available protocols, contact your VPN provider and include:

- Paired speed-test results, approximate test time, and the test endpoint if shown
- Device, operating system, and VPN app version
- Selected VPN server and protocol
- Whether you were on Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Whether the VPN ran on the device or the router
This information helps support distinguish a local-network issue from a VPN route, server, or router problem. Avoid disabling firewall or antivirus protections as a routine speed fix; make security changes only when support identifies a specific cause.
Why there is no universal VPN speed-loss figure
The cited support guidance describes possible causes and troubleshooting steps, not a universal expected percentage of speed loss or evidence about how often each cause occurs. A paired test on your own connection is more useful than applying an unsourced average to your setup.
