Start by comparing a wired speed test at your modem or gateway with one through the main Deco. If the direct test is slow, the problem is likely upstream of the mesh; if it is fast but a Deco or a particular room is slow, troubleshoot that part of the network. For satellite dead zones, improve placement first, then consider Ethernet backhaul if you can wire the units.

Why is my Deco Wi-Fi slow?

First find out where performance drops. Use the same capable computer for each wired test, keep other network activity low, and record the speed, device, test server, and ISP plan. TP-Link recommends testing directly at the modem or gateway with the main Deco temporarily disconnected, then testing through the main Deco. See TP-Link’s main-node troubleshooting guide.

  1. Test the internet connection directly. Disconnect the main Deco from the modem or gateway and connect a capable laptop or PC to that upstream device by Ethernet. Run a speed test.
  2. Test through the main Deco. Reconnect the Deco, connect the same computer to it by Ethernet, and repeat the test using the same server if possible.
  3. Compare the results. If the direct test is slow too, contact your ISP or investigate the modem, gateway, service, or test setup before changing the mesh. If the direct result is healthy but the Deco result is low, check the Ethernet cable, port capabilities, Deco configuration, and test method.

For Wi-Fi comparisons, reconnect the test device before each run and confirm it is attached to the intended Deco. A client can remain connected to a different node than the one you are testing. The Deco app’s internet-speed test measures the main unit’s connection; it does not show the speed every connected device receives.

Is the main Deco or a satellite causing the slowdown?

Separate a slow main-node connection from a slow satellite connection. A satellite’s speed depends in part on how it connects to the rest of the mesh: wirelessly or through Ethernet backhaul.

If the main Deco is slow over Ethernet

Try a known-good Ethernet cable rated for the link you expect, and check the network-port speeds on both the computer and Deco. TP-Link recommends CAT5E-or-better cable for Ethernet troubleshooting. If the main unit still tests poorly while a direct modem test is healthy, TP-Link also suggests swapping which Deco serves as the main unit to help identify a possible hardware problem. Do not treat a cable replacement as a fix for a slow direct-to-modem result.

If only a satellite is slow

Check whether it uses wireless or Ethernet backhaul. A wireless satellite relies on its connection to another Deco, so distance and obstructions can weaken performance even when the satellite is close to the device you are using. TP-Link says Ethernet-backhaul Deco speeds should be the same as the main unit’s; its guidance for wireless backhaul is to move the satellite closer to the main Deco and place it in clear sight. See TP-Link’s satellite-speed FAQ.

Where should I put a Deco to fix a dead zone?

Place a wireless satellite where it still receives a good signal from its source Deco, not at the farthest edge of the room or area with no coverage. A node cannot reliably extend a connection it cannot receive well.

  • Choose an open location rather than an enclosed cabinet or a spot behind a wall or large metal object.
  • Use the Deco app’s signal or link-strength check while testing candidate locations. TP-Link recommends two bars.
  • Try keeping the satellite at roughly the same height as the source Deco; TP-Link’s placement guidance suggests about 1–1.5 feet above the floor.
  • Keep units away from possible 2.4 GHz interference sources such as microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices.
  • After moving a unit, check that the new position still covers the area you want to serve.

These are placement guidelines, not a guaranteed distance or formula for every building. Walls, construction materials, interference, and the specific Deco model all affect the result. See TP-Link’s Deco placement guide.

Would Ethernet backhaul help?

Ethernet backhaul connects Deco units by cable instead of relying on a wireless node-to-node link. TP-Link describes it as faster and more stable than wireless backhaul. It can be useful when a satellite’s wireless link is the limiting factor and you can run Ethernet to that location. It is not necessary to wire every satellite, and it will not fix a slow ISP connection.

Connection What to expect Trade-off
Wireless backhaul Satellite performance depends on the wireless link to another Deco; placement and obstructions matter. No Ethernet run is required, but the node needs a usable wireless connection to its source.
Ethernet backhaul TP-Link characterizes it as faster and more stable; its satellite FAQ says Ethernet-backhaul speeds should match the main Deco. Requires a working cable route and the correct network topology.

Set up wired backhaul in the right order

  1. Set up the Deco units on the same network wirelessly in the Deco app.
  2. After setup, connect the satellite by Ethernet. TP-Link says backhaul activates automatically.
  3. In Router mode, connect a satellite to a LAN port on the main Deco, or to a switch connected to that LAN port. Avoid a wiring arrangement that bypasses the main Deco and creates a loop.
  4. In Access Point mode, TP-Link’s guide permits other wiring arrangements; check the instructions for your setup and model.
  5. If Ethernet backhaul does not activate, try another cable or port. Temporarily bypass a switch to check whether it is interfering; some switches may not forward the protocol traffic Deco uses.

TP-Link’s instructions are in its Ethernet-backhaul setup and troubleshooting guide. The guide is from TP-Link UK, so check your model’s regional instructions if its interface or requirements differ.

When a cable is the right purchase

If you have confirmed a cable fault or decided to install wired backhaul, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one suitable option; check the port speeds, required length, and topology first. TP-Link recommends CAT5E or better for slow-Ethernet troubleshooting. A new cable will not improve an ISP-side fault or, by itself, strengthen a satellite that still uses wireless backhaul.

What settings should I check after the basic tests?

If the main Deco is slow over Wi-Fi but performs normally over Ethernet, check for wireless interference and test-server differences. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide also lists QoS, UPnP, and SIP ALG settings as checks. App paths and available controls can vary by Deco model, region, firmware, and app version, so use the controls available for your system rather than assuming one universal menu path.

What information should I give TP-Link or my ISP?

If the ordered checks do not resolve the issue, share evidence that identifies where the slowdown occurs. Include the direct-to-modem and through-main-Deco results, ISP and plan, speed-test servers, computer and port capabilities, Deco models and network topology, and whether the affected satellite uses wireless or Ethernet backhaul. For a coverage problem, describe the satellite’s location and the app-reported signal strength. TP-Link’s support guidance asks for connection and placement details when relevant: main-node troubleshooting and Ethernet-backhaul troubleshooting.
