To troubleshoot most sfc /scannow problems, open Command Prompt as an administrator, run Microsoft’s DISM repair command, and then run SFC. Wait until verification reaches 100%, then follow the exact result message: a clean scan, repaired files, files SFC could not repair, and a scan operation failure each call for a different next step.

Run DISM before SFC

Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running System File Checker. DISM can provide files SFC needs to repair protected system files. In its standard online mode, DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source by default.

  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. SFC requires membership in the Administrators group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Run this command and let it finish:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  3. When DISM completes, run:

    sfc /scannow
  4. Keep Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100%, then read the final message.

Microsoft Support describes the command this way: “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” See Microsoft’s SFC repair instructions.

Choose the next step from the SFC result

“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”

SFC found no missing or corrupted protected system files. If the problem that led you to run the scan continues, troubleshoot that symptom separately; a clean SFC result does not establish that every Windows or application problem has been fixed.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”

SFC repaired the detected files. Restart if Windows prompts you to, then check whether the original symptom is resolved. If it remains, investigate that issue rather than repeatedly running SFC without a specific reason.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”

Use the CBS log to identify what SFC could not repair. Then consider whether DISM can access a suitable repair source or whether a Windows recovery option is appropriate. Do not download individual system DLLs from unofficial sites: a file from the wrong Windows version or build can cause further problems.

“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”

Microsoft advises trying the scan in Safe Mode and checking for the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders under %WinDir%WinSxSTemp. Safe Mode starts Windows with a reduced set of drivers and services, which can help when the normal scan operation cannot proceed. Follow Microsoft’s SFC troubleshooting guidance.

Find the files SFC could not repair in CBS.log

When SFC reports files it could not repair, an elevated Command Prompt can extract the log entries marked for System File Checker:

Rank #3
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
  1. Open sfcdetails.txt from your desktop.

  2. Check the dates and times on the entries and focus on those from the latest SFC run. The extracted file includes details from previous SFC runs as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Note the affected file paths. Use them to assess the repair source or recovery option; do not treat an old log entry as proof that the most recent scan found the same issue.

Use targeted or offline SFC commands only when they fit

Microsoft’s SFC command reference documents options for verification, a specific file, and an offline Windows installation. These are alternatives for particular situations, not replacements for the normal online sfc /scannow flow.

If DISM cannot use Windows Update

If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, Microsoft documents specifying a suitable source, such as a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on network storage or removable media. The source must match the Windows image being repaired; a USB drive is not automatically a valid source just because it contains Windows files.

Microsoft’s example uses /Source and /LimitAccess to direct DISM to a source and prevent it from relying on Windows Update. Do not copy a sample path without replacing it with a verified, compatible source. For details on choosing and using image repair sources, see Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance and its SFC repair instructions.

Distinguish an SFC result from the Windows problem

SFC checks protected Windows system files; it does not diagnose every cause of a crash, update problem, or application failure. If DISM and SFC finish but the original issue persists, use the steps relevant to that symptom. If Windows still cannot be repaired, Microsoft’s support guidance points to Windows recovery options; reinstalling may be necessary when other repair steps do not work.

Manual replacement of system files is an advanced recovery step, not a routine fix. Use official instructions and files appropriate to the Windows version rather than copying files casually from another PC. Microsoft documents a specific case in which SFC flags files in the Windows Defender PowerShell module folder and directs affected systems to DISM; that special case should not be assumed to explain unrelated SFC errors. See Microsoft’s guidance on that Defender module issue.
