If SEGA Genesis games won’t start on Nintendo Switch Online, first connect the Switch to the internet and confirm the selected user’s Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo checks internet access, membership eligibility and network status when you open the classic-game library. After a successful launch, Nintendo allows up to seven days of offline play; reconnect and launch the software again when that period has passed.
Check the three requirements for opening the Genesis library
Nintendo’s access guidance identifies three things to check: an internet connection, an eligible active membership, and Nintendo’s network status. The support article covers Switch 2, Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED, and lists the SEGA Genesis library: Nintendo: How to start a game from the Nintendo Switch Online classic game libraries.

- Connectivity: The console needs internet access to verify access when you start the library.
- Membership: The Nintendo Account linked to the user opening the app must have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Service availability: A Nintendo network maintenance event or outage may prevent access.
Fix the problem in this order

Connect the Switch to the internet
Connect the console to Wi-Fi or another available internet connection, then open the SEGA Genesis app again. If an error code appears, note it exactly and search for that code in Nintendo Support.

Verify the selected user’s membership
Check that the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user launching the app has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Standard Nintendo Switch Online alone does not include the Genesis/Mega Drive library. Nintendo’s UK FAQ calls the regional service family SEGA Mega Drive; membership naming and support details can vary by region. See Nintendo UK: Nintendo Switch Online FAQ.

Refresh offline access if the console has been disconnected
Nintendo says an internet connection is required when first launching the software, after which it can be played offline for up to seven days. If more than seven days have passed since a successful launch, reconnect and start the software again. Nintendo Support’s publication date for this guidance is not stated; it was accessed in 2026. The Q&A covers Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED and says the Genesis service follows the same rule: Nintendo Support Japan: Offline play for classic-game library software.

Check Nintendo network status
Look for posted maintenance or outages on Nintendo’s network status page. The support guidance does not establish that an outage is happening now; check the status page for current information.

Install the latest system software
On the console, open HOME → System Settings → System → System Update. Nintendo recommends using the latest system software as general maintenance. Its update page lists version 23.0.0, released September 10, 2026: Nintendo: System updates. Nintendo does not identify an outdated system version as a known Genesis-specific loading bug.

Use the exact error message to escalate
If the app still will not open, follow the Nintendo Support guidance for the displayed code or contact Nintendo Support. Without an error code or further diagnosis, the cause of an individual console’s problem cannot be identified from these general access checks.

Do you need a special controller, SD card or adapter?
No accessory is identified in Nintendo’s access troubleshooting as a fix for a library that will not open. A controller can affect gameplay after a game loads, but it does not provide membership entitlement or verify online access. Nintendo’s support guidance also does not recommend a microSD card, Ethernet adapter or repair kit for this access problem. Those products should only be considered if a separate, specific storage or hardware issue has been diagnosed.

The Expansion Pack is the relevant membership tier because it grants access to the Genesis/Mega Drive library; it is a digital service, not a physical accessory.
