If screenshots are not working on your Dell laptop, first identify the correct Print Screen key combination, then test Windows + Shift + S. On Dell keyboards, Print Screen may be labeled PrtSc, share a key with another function, or require Fn. Also check whether the capture was copied to the clipboard rather than saved as a file.
The steps below apply to Dell laptops running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Because Dell keyboard layouts vary by model, your laptop’s user guide is the final authority for the exact key mapping.
1. Find the Print Screen function on your Dell keyboard
Inspect the entire function row and nearby keys for PrtSc, PrtScn, PrntScrn, or Print Screen. On some Dell laptops, the function is printed as a secondary legend on an F-key. Dell commonly documents Fn + F10, but that is an example rather than a universal shortcut. Other keyboards use Fn + Insert.
- If Print Screen is the main legend on a key, press that key by itself.
- If it is a secondary legend, hold Fn while pressing the associated key.
- If your function row has a function-lock or illuminated-touch design, use the procedure in your Dell model’s guide to select the secondary function.
Do not assume that the same Fn-lock procedure works on every Dell model. Search Dell Support for your exact model and open its user guide if the legends or combinations do not match the generic instructions.

2. Test Windows Snipping Tool independently
Press Windows + Shift + S. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, this opens the screen-snipping overlay. Choose a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture mode, depending on the controls shown on your system.
- Select the area or window to capture.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool window that appears.
- Edit the image if needed, then use the save control to choose a folder and format.
If this works while the Dell Print Screen key does not, Windows capture is functioning. The likely issue is the key’s mapping, Fn layer, or physical keyboard—not a general failure of screenshots. This test narrows the cause but does not by itself prove that a hardware component has failed.
3. Check where each screenshot method puts the image
A frequent source of confusion is that some shortcuts copy an image to the clipboard and do not create a file. Use the method deliberately and check its expected destination.

If you pressed plain PrtSc and immediately searched for a PNG file, the screenshot may have succeeded but still be waiting in the clipboard. Pasting into Paint is the quickest confirmation.

4. Check the Print Screen setting in Windows
Windows can assign the Print Screen key to open screen snipping instead of performing the older clipboard behavior. Review this setting when the key opens an unexpected tool or appears to do nothing.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Accessibility, then Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn it on if you want the key to launch Snipping Tool, or turn it off if you expect the traditional Print Screen behavior.
- Test the key again using the Dell-specific Fn combination if required.
The available behavior can differ with Windows settings and the application that currently has focus, so test from the desktop and from a normal application window.
5. Use a controlled diagnostic sequence
Run these checks in order and record what happens:
- Try Windows + Shift + S. If it captures, Windows and Snipping Tool are available.
- Try the Dell Print Screen combination. Use the legend on your keyboard or the model guide rather than guessing F10.
- Paste with Ctrl + V. Open Paint and paste after using plain PrtSc or Alt + PrtSc.
- Check Pictures > Screenshots. Look there only after using Windows + PrtSc.
- Check the setting. Confirm the Print Screen-to-snipping option matches the behavior you want.
- Try an external USB keyboard. A keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key provides a comparison.
An external key that works while the built-in key does not makes the laptop’s labeling, Fn layer, or keyboard hardware more likely. It does not identify which of those three is defective. Use your exact Dell model documentation or Dell support for a model-specific repair decision.
6. Fixes for common symptoms
Nothing appears after pressing PrtSc
Press Ctrl + V in Paint. Plain PrtSc normally places the capture on the clipboard, so no notification or file is required. If Paste is unavailable, repeat the test with the correct Fn combination.

Windows + PrtSc does not create a file
Confirm that you are pressing the actual Print Screen function, not a nearby function-row key. Then check Pictures > Screenshots. If the folder is absent or unchanged, use Windows + Shift + S and save through Snipping Tool; this also separates a file-location misunderstanding from a key problem.
Print Screen opens Snipping Tool
This may be intentional. Review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping and change it to the behavior you prefer.
Only the active window is captured
Alt + PrtSc is specifically an active-window shortcut. Use plain PrtSc for the full screen, or Windows + Shift + S to select a region.

Recheck the Dell model guide for an Fn combination or function-lock state. If the documented combination still fails, the built-in key or keyboard assembly may need service. The external-keyboard result is useful evidence, not a definitive hardware diagnosis.

The screenshot is black, blank, or incomplete
Repeat the test with Windows + Shift + S and save the result. If only one application produces a blank image, that application’s display or protected-content behavior may be involved. If every method produces a blank capture, note whether the desktop itself is captured and consult Dell or Microsoft support for the specific Windows version and graphics configuration.
7. When to consult the Dell model guide or support
Use model-specific documentation when:
- the keyboard has no obvious PrtSc label;
- F10, Insert, or another key does not match the printed legends;
- the function row uses a special lock, touch strip, or illuminated control;
- an external keyboard works but the built-in combination does not; or
- you need a replacement keyboard or hardware inspection.
Dell’s general Print Screen guidance covers many product families, while individual models can assign secondary functions differently. Have the exact model name and Windows version ready when contacting support.

Can a Windows update change how my Dell Print Screen key behaves?
It can change the Snipping Tool integration or settings behavior. Recheck the Print Screen option under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard after an update.
Do I need administrator permission to take a screenshot?
Standard desktop captures normally do not require administrator permission. If only a particular managed application blocks capture, check that application’s policy with your administrator.
