If an iOS 18 screenshot thumbnail disappears from the lower-left corner, that does not usually mean the screenshot was deleted. For a standard screenshot, the thumbnail is temporary and the image is saved automatically to Photos.
Start with the Screenshots collection, then check Hidden, Recently Deleted, the Recovered album, iCloud synchronization, and the library view. The correct result depends on whether you took a normal screenshot or saved a full-page capture as a PDF.
1. Open the correct Screenshots collection
In iOS 18, Screenshots is not a separate top-level tab in the Photos app. To open it:

- Scroll down to Media Types.
- Tap Media Types.
- Tap Screenshots.
Look through this collection before assuming the image is missing. You can also use the search field in Photos and search for “screenshots,” but the Media Types route is the direct location for ordinary screenshot files.

Confirm that the capture was saved normally
For an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up together. On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the Side button and Home button together.
The thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner is only a temporary preview. Swiping it away or waiting for it to disappear does not delete the screenshot. A normal screenshot should still be in the Photos library and in Photos → Media Types → Screenshots.
2. Check whether you created a full-page PDF instead
A full-page capture does not necessarily go to Photos. After taking a screenshot, tap the thumbnail and select Full Page. When you tap Done, iPhone gives you two different destinations:

If you selected Save PDF to Files, open Files and check Browse, On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, and any folder you selected. The PDF will not appear in Photos or in the Screenshots collection. You would need to save or convert it into Photos separately if you want it in the library.
3. Look in the Hidden album
A screenshot can disappear from the Library if it was accidentally hidden. Hidden items also do not appear in albums or the Photos widget.
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Hidden, then View Album.
- Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Touch and hold the screenshot.
- Tap Unhide.
Do not use the older Settings → Photos path for these controls. In current iOS, the relevant settings are under Settings → Apps → Photos.

If the Hidden album is missing
Apple allows the Hidden album itself to be turned off. Go to Settings → Apps → Photos and turn on Show Hidden Album. Return to Photos → Collections → Utilities and check Hidden again.
On supported iOS versions, Hidden and Recently Deleted are protected by Face ID or Touch ID by default. If you need to change that behavior, go to Settings → Apps → Photos and turn off Use Face ID. On devices using Touch ID, the setting is labeled Use Touch ID.
4. Recover the screenshot from Recently Deleted
If the screenshot was deleted from Photos, it is removed from the Library and from the Screenshots collection. It may still be recoverable for 30 days, according to Apple Support.
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Scroll up to Utilities.
- Tap Recently Deleted, then View Album.
- Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Tap Select and choose the screenshot.
- Tap the More button, then Recover.
The recovered image returns to the Photos library. If more than 30 days have passed, or if you permanently deleted the item, this route will not restore it.
5. Check the Recovered album after updating to iOS 18
iOS 18 can identify photos and videos that still exist on the device but are not currently indexed as part of the Photos library. Apple provides a Recovered album for those items.

- Scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Recovered.
- Authenticate if prompted.
- Select the screenshot and tap Restore to Library.
The Recovered album is available in iOS 18 and later supported releases, but it is not always visible. It appears only when the device finds recoverable, unindexed items. Its absence does not indicate that iOS 18 is malfunctioning.

Apple lists possible causes such as a damaged Photos database, a camera app that failed to save correctly, or a third-party app that had permission to manage the photo library. If you find the screenshot there, use Restore to Library. Do not tap Permanently Delete unless you are certain: items permanently deleted from Recovered do not move to Recently Deleted and cannot be restored.
6. Check whether Photos is showing the wrong library
iCloud Photos can use a Personal Library, a Shared Library, or both. A screenshot in the Shared Library is not visible when Photos is filtered to show only the Personal Library, and the reverse is also true.
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Tap the profile button in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Library View Options.
- Try Both Libraries.
If you prefer, switch between Personal Library and Shared Library to identify where the screenshot is stored.

Check the Apple Account and iCloud Photos setting
Make sure the iPhone uses the same Apple Account as the other devices where you expect to see the screenshot:
- Open Settings and check the Apple Account name at the top.
- Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone.
Connect to Wi-Fi and give Photos time to update. If iCloud Photos was turned off after the screenshot was taken, the image may still be available in iCloud Photos once synchronization is enabled again.
7. Check whether someone removed it from a Shared Library
Every participant in an iCloud Shared Photo Library can add, edit, or delete items. If another participant deleted the screenshot, it disappears for everyone in that Shared Library.

Only the person who originally added the item can permanently delete it or recover it from Recently Deleted. If the screenshot belongs to someone else, ask that person to check their Recently Deleted album and recover it.

8. Use a quick diagnosis table

9. What not to conclude too quickly
- A missing thumbnail does not prove deletion. The thumbnail is only a temporary preview; ordinary screenshots are saved automatically.
- The Recovered album is not supposed to appear on every iOS 18 iPhone. It is shown only when iOS finds recoverable items outside the active Photos library.
- Screenshots is not a top-level Library tab. Find it through Photos → Media Types → Screenshots.
- Deleting a screenshot from Photos removes it from its albums too. Album removal is not a separate copy of the file, so recovery must be done through Recently Deleted.
If none of these locations contains the image, repeat the test with a new standard screenshot. If the new screenshot also fails to appear in Media Types → Screenshots, confirm that you have enough device storage, install any available iOS update, and retry after restarting the iPhone. Those steps do not recover an older file, but they help distinguish a one-off missing item from a continuing capture or Photos indexing problem.
For a screenshot that matters, use the Share menu to send it to another location after taking it, or confirm that it appears in Photos before dismissing the thumbnail. For full-page captures, check the destination shown after tapping Done; choosing Files creates a PDF rather than a Photos image.

Why did my screenshot thumbnail disappear on iOS 18?

How do I recover a deleted screenshot on iPhone?
Go to Photos → Collections → Utilities → Recently Deleted → View Album, authenticate, tap Select, choose the screenshot, tap More, and tap Recover. Apple Support says deleted items remain recoverable for 30 days.
Why can’t I see the Hidden album?
Go to Settings → Apps → Photos and turn on Show Hidden Album. Then check Photos → Collections → Utilities → Hidden. Hidden and Recently Deleted may require Face ID or Touch ID.
Should the Recovered album always appear after installing iOS 18?
No. Apple says Recovered appears only when iOS finds photos or videos that exist on the device but are not currently part of the Photos library.

Why is a screenshot on my iPhone but not on my iPad?
Check that both devices use the same Apple Account, that Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos → Sync this iPhone or its device equivalent is enabled, and that Photos is showing Both Libraries rather than only Personal or Shared Library.
The Bottom Line
For a normal screenshot, first open Photos → Media Types → Screenshots. If it is not there, check Hidden, Recently Deleted, and—after an iOS 18 update—Recovered. Then verify iCloud sync, the Apple Account, and the Personal/Shared Library view. If the capture was a full-page screenshot saved with Save PDF to Files, look in Files instead: it was never saved to Photos.
