If Arthur will not open a door or you freeze while entering a building in Red Dead Redemption 2, first check that you are at the correct entrance and have completed the mission’s required interaction. Similar symptoms can come from a missed objective, the wrong control, a story-scene glitch, or a Red Dead Online session soft-lock—so the right recovery depends on where it happens.
1. Confirm the mission objective and the intended door
Read the current objective and listen to the dialogue before repeatedly pressing the interaction button. Some missions place a non-entry door beside the one the scene expects you to use. In the Chapter 2 mission “Polite Society, Valentine Style,” players discussing a blocked hotel door point out that two doors are nearby and only one is the mission entrance; one reply also asks whether the player spoke to the desk clerk first. 2. Check the interaction, approach, and character state
Opening a door and kicking it are not necessarily the same action. Use the interaction or melee input relevant to the prompt and your platform’s control mapping. If no prompt appears, try approaching at a walk, keeping Arthur’s hands empty, and waiting briefly for the prompt. In a PC discussion about kicking a door during the Valentine mission, players suggested those checks; one contributor said running into the door and pressing the melee key worked for them. These are anecdotal suggestions, not guaranteed fixes, and controls may vary with platform and key bindings. Steam Community discussion.
3. Make sure a tutorial is asking you to enter
A cover instruction can be mistaken for a door-entry instruction. In the opening snow mission, a GameFAQs answer says to take cover at the cattle shed rather than at the house door, and identifies R1 for PlayStation. That guidance applies to this particular tutorial prompt, not to doors generally. GameFAQs discussion.

4. If a story mission interaction will not advance
If you have confirmed the correct door and required interaction but the scene remains stuck, try recovering the mission state before making more disruptive changes.
- Reload the latest save. Return to the most recent save and retry the mission interaction.
- Restart the game. If reloading does not help, close and relaunch the game, then retry.
- Consider a checkpoint skip only if available. In the hotel-door discussion, players report that letting the mission fail and choosing “skip checkpoint” moved them past the blocked door. This is an individual player-reported workaround, not official guidance, and it skips that checkpoint sequence. Steam Community discussion.
5. If Red Dead Online freezes at the Moonshine Shack
A character freezing at a Moonshine Shack entry is an online session problem, distinct from a story mission door prompt. In one August 2025 player discussion, a reply recommends changing lobbies or returning to Online > Free Roam. Try switching session before considering more disruptive recovery options; this workaround is player-reported and has no official confirmation. Steam Community discussion.

6. Contact Rockstar Support if the problem persists
Rockstar’s RDR2 support index provides support categories and a route to submit a request, but the reviewed index does not identify a door-specific remedy. When asking for help, include your platform, whether the problem occurs in story mode or Red Dead Online, the mission and objective, the exact location, whether an interaction prompt appears, and what you have already tried.
