If Onimusha: Way of the Sword crashes on startup or will not launch on PC, first check that your computer meets the requirements shown in the storefront where you installed it. Then follow the troubleshooting steps for Steam, Epic Games Store, or the Microsoft Store/Xbox app—not a one-size-fits-all fix. Capcom lists several possible causes, but no single fix is guaranteed for every system.

Start with the storefront and the exact symptom

Identify whether you installed the game through Steam, Epic Games Store, or the Microsoft Store/Xbox app. Then note what happens when you open it: does it close immediately, show an error, open a crash reporter, or reach a blank or flickering display? The steps differ by storefront and symptom. Capcom links Steam players to its official troubleshooting thread and provides separate guidance for Epic and Microsoft Store users in its PC support FAQ.

Check the PC requirements for your storefront

Compare your hardware and free storage with the live requirements shown by the storefront where the game is installed. Capcom warns that a system below minimum requirements may have severe performance problems or may not run the game. Requirements can change, so use the current listing rather than relying on an old spec sheet.

Steam requirements currently listed

The current Steam listing specifies Windows 11 and a 64-bit processor and operating system. Its minimum requirements are:

Battle monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a gloomy supernatural story. Follow the story of a samurai wearing the Oni glove - a mystical artifact that gives its wearer the power to kill Genma.
  • A passionate samurai who wants to prove in Kyoto that he is second to none in dealing with the sword. But the path that lies ahead of him takes an unexpected turn
  • Equipped with the Oni glove, Musashi has powers beyond the human possible. He not only gives it the strength needed to defeat the genma, but also has numerous other abilities - for example, absorbing the souls of Genma and using their energy. But who is behind the voice that penetrates from the glove?
  • In his fight against the Genma, Musashi will meet powerful opponents whose power is equal to his own. Will he win or die in battle? In the capital, bloody duels are waiting for life and death
  • The game takes place against the backdrop of countless shrines and temples of Kyoto, such as the Kiyomizu-dera. The capital is slowly engulfed by vicious clouds from Miasma and takes on an eerie, ominous appearance
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: GeForce GTX 1660 (6 GB) or Radeon RX 5500 XT (8 GB)
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 50 GB available space and an SSD

Steam’s recommended specifications list an Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, and a GeForce RTX 2060 Super (8 GB) or Radeon RX 6600 (8 GB); the listing also says an SSD is required. These are Steam’s listed requirements, not a guarantee that meeting them will prevent every crash. The SSD and free-space figures are requirements, not evidence that buying or adding an SSD will fix a crash if your installation already meets them.

Apply the checks that match your storefront

Before changing several settings at once, try one relevant check and reopen the game. This helps you see whether that change affected the startup problem. Capcom’s recommendations vary by storefront; follow its directions for your installation rather than assuming every step applies identically.

Check security software without leaving protection off

Capcom Customer Support says, “Some launching issues and frame rate drops may be attributed to certain security software preventing the game executable from launching due to a false-positive error.” Add only the specific game executable and relevant launcher files to your antivirus or firewall exclusions, using the paths and instructions for your storefront in Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting thread or PC support FAQ. Do not disable security protection indefinitely or exclude broad folders unnecessarily.

Update Windows and check the graphics driver

Install available Windows updates and check for an appropriate graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer. Capcom’s Steam thread, posted September 3, 2026, lists NVIDIA GeForce driver version 596.49 or later and AMD Radeon 26.5.1 or later, and recommends trying another driver version within its supported range if problems continue. Those are version-specific instructions, not permanent minimums; check the live Capcom thread and the manufacturer’s current driver guidance before changing versions. Capcom also describes resetting graphics-driver settings and, as a further option, a clean driver installation.

Make sure the game uses the intended GPU

On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, check that Windows or the graphics software assigns the game to the intended high-performance GPU. Capcom’s FAQ says Windows graphics settings can be used to choose “High performance,” though the menu can differ by system. Capcom notes that some laptop discrete GPUs and high-end integrated GPUs may not have been officially tested or supported; some multi-GPU systems may need the preferred GPU changed or another GPU disabled.

Verify the installed game files

Use the file verification option in the storefront where you installed the game. Capcom documents verification checks for Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store/Xbox app users in its storefront-specific instructions. This checks the installation; it does not establish that corrupted files are the cause of every startup crash.

Try the remaining checks only when relevant

If the game still crashes, use Capcom’s storefront-specific guidance to check the following items according to your symptom:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether an overlay or another running application is interfering or consuming substantial system resources
  • Whether the game or launcher is set to compatibility mode; Capcom suggests disabling compatibility mode if it was enabled
  • Whether administrator privileges for the game or relevant launcher are appropriate to try
  • Display settings or lower graphics settings, particularly if the game reaches a blank, flickering, or unstable display
  • Power settings and whether the PC is overheating or has obstructed ventilation
  • Shader-cache or DirectX-related checks described for your storefront and symptom

Do not assume that every item applies to an immediate startup crash. Capcom presents them as possible checks, not as a universal sequence or guaranteed fix.

Keep the crash report and system details

When the game crashes, Capcom says it creates a CrashReport folder. In most cases, it contains a ZIP named for the event’s date and time. Keep the ZIP closest to the crash in case support asks for it. Capcom’s Steam thread provides the default Steam installation location; its FAQ describes the Epic default and says the report tool displays the location after generation.

If you contact Capcom, include the details that help distinguish a game issue from a system-specific configuration problem:

  • CPU and PC model
  • GPU, VRAM, and graphics driver version
  • Installed memory and Windows version
  • Security software and display setup
  • Graphics settings and what happened, including when it happened
  • Whether restarting changed the result and the steps that reproduce the crash
  • A screenshot or video, if it clearly shows the issue

Use Capcom’s official PC support FAQ for the relevant storefront’s reporting instructions. Avoid naming a particular cause unless you have evidence to support it.
