The message “No sound output device detected” usually means Windows cannot see a usable audio endpoint. A disabled device, missing or corrupted driver, failed hardware-detection process, firmware setting, or disconnected external device can all cause it. Start by checking which output Windows is using, then inspect Device Manager before changing drivers.
Start with the safe, quick checks
- Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and open the output-device list. Select the intended speakers, headphones, headset, monitor, or TV.
- Check Windows volume and mute status, then check the physical volume control on the speakers, headset, monitor, or TV.
- Confirm that powered speakers and the display are switched on and that cables are fully inserted.
- Move a USB headset or USB speaker to another USB port. Disconnect headphones temporarily so a laptop cannot be switching output automatically.
- Restart the computer.
These checks are recommended by Microsoft before deeper repairs. See Microsoft’s sound and audio troubleshooting guide.
First decision: does Windows detect the audio hardware?
The next step determines the correct repair. A device listed in Sound settings may simply be routed incorrectly; a device with a warning icon in Device Manager usually needs driver work; a controller missing everywhere may indicate firmware or hardware trouble.
Check Device Manager
- Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for entries such as Realtek Audio, High Definition Audio Device, Intel Smart Sound Technology audio, NVIDIA High Definition Audio, AMD High Definition Audio Device, or a USB/Bluetooth headset.
- If the device is present and Enable device appears when you right-click it, select that option.
- If it has a warning icon, continue with the driver steps below.
- If it is absent, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Also inspect Other devices. An unknown device or an Intel/High Definition Audio controller with a warning symbol can represent the missing audio stack.
These checks apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10 and are described in Microsoft’s missing-device instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Repair or replace the driver
Install updates first
On Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred first source, although the computer manufacturer may provide a more suitable package.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click the audio device in Sound, video and game controllers.
- Choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
For Windows driver guidance, see Microsoft’s audio-driver article.
Uninstall and let Windows reinstall
- Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall if prompted.
- Restart the PC. Windows commonly attempts to reinstall the driver after reboot, but it cannot do so if the hardware is not detected or the package is unavailable.
Try Microsoft’s generic driver
If the manufacturer package is failing, right-click the device and select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Choose the appropriate generic High Definition Audio Device and restart.

- Power source type: Corded Electric
- Easy Headphone connectivity -- Compatible with all analog headsets, from standard mobile phone earbuds to gaming and studio-grade headphones; Connect your headsets with single or split stereo/mic connector easily without the use of a Y-splitter cable
- Powerful downloadable software -- control panel software gives powerful Audio Enhancements and unprecedented control; Also includes optimized profiles for multiple earphone brands
- No drivers needed -- works straight out of the box
This is a troubleshooting fallback, not always the best permanent driver. It can restore basic sound while removing headphone-jack detection, microphone behavior, Dolby, DTS, Waves, or MaxxAudio features. If that happens, install the exact package supplied for your computer.
Use the exact manufacturer driver
Search the support page for the exact laptop, desktop, or motherboard model—not merely “Realtek.” A laptop may require a coordinated chipset, Intel Smart Sound Technology, audio-codec, and enhancement package. Manufacturer drivers are especially important after a clean Windows installation, when a headphone jack or microphone is broken, or when a generic driver produces sound but loses OEM features.
Download only from Windows Update or the computer, motherboard, or audio-device manufacturer. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities and random download sites: they can install incompatible packages, replace a working OEM driver, add unwanted software, and make rollback harder.

If audio stopped after an update
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if it is available, then restart.
If rollback is unavailable, check Settings > Windows Update > Update history for a recent driver or quality update. Install the OEM driver instead of repeatedly installing newer generic drivers. If a restore point exists, System Restore is another option. Microsoft documents this sequence at Fix audio stops working after a Windows update.
Recommended Free Tools
Restart the Windows audio services
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Restart Windows Audio.
- Restart Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Restart Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
Do not change service startup types or registry settings as a first-line fix. Optional shortcuts are devmgmt.msc for Device Manager and mmsys.cpl for the classic Sound panel.
If the device is listed but still silent
This is a routing problem rather than a missing-controller problem.

Windows 11 users can run Microsoft’s automated Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Windows 10 has similar Sound controls, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; the operating system still runs, but normal free security and feature support ended on that date. See Microsoft’s current audio guidance.

Video can work while display audio does not. Confirm that the monitor or TV has built-in speakers or an audio output, and check its own volume and mute controls. Select the display under Settings > System > Sound > Output. In Device Manager, look for NVIDIA High Definition Audio, AMD High Definition Audio Device, or Intel Display Audio. A graphics-driver change or incomplete installation can remove that endpoint. Power off the PC and display completely, then restart both.
A monitor without speakers can still appear as an HDMI/DisplayPort output; selecting it produces silence even when the computer’s internal audio is healthy.

Check Bluetooth and USB audio separately
Bluetooth
- Confirm the headset or speaker is connected, not merely paired.
- Select it as the Windows output device.
- Remove and re-pair it if it disappears.
- Test internal speakers or a wired headset. If wired audio works, troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing, profiles, and drivers rather than reinstalling the internal audio driver.
USB headsets and adapters
If a USB headset works while built-in speakers do not, Windows’ general audio system is probably functioning. The likely fault is the internal driver, controller, speakers, headphone jack, BIOS setting, or OEM software. A USB adapter is a useful bypass or diagnostic device, not a repair for the internal jack or speakers.
When the controller is missing everywhere
If the audio controller remains absent after showing hidden devices, scanning for hardware changes, updating Windows, and installing the exact OEM chipset and audio packages, check firmware. BIOS/UEFI labels vary; look for settings such as Onboard Audio, HD Audio Controller, Integrated Audio, or Azalia Audio. A full shutdown and power cycle can also restore detection.
Persistent absence can mean disabled onboard audio, missing Intel Smart Sound components, a loose or damaged connection, or a failed motherboard audio controller. Software cannot restore hardware that is not electrically detected. Test a USB headset or USB audio adapter; if it works, use it as a temporary bypass and contact the computer manufacturer or a reputable repair provider, prioritizing warranty support.
