When a TV says “No Signal,” it is not receiving video on the selected input; that message alone does not prove the laptop is faulty. First select the TV’s exact HDMI port and reseat the cable. Then choose a display mode on the laptop and test the connection without docks or other accessories. If the picture still does not appear, cross-test the cable, laptop, and TV to narrow down the cause.
1. Select the TV’s HDMI input and reseat the cable
- Use the TV remote or its input/source menu to select the HDMI port the laptop is connected to—for example, HDMI 1 rather than HDMI 2. The TV must be set to the physical port in use. See Dell’s HDMI troubleshooting guide.
- Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, then reconnect it firmly. Check for visible damage; do not force a connector into a port.
- Wait briefly to see whether the TV detects the signal.
“No Signal” means the display is not receiving video from the computer. It does not identify which part of the connection has failed.
2. Choose the laptop’s display output
Windows 10 or Windows 11
Press Windows+P and choose Duplicate to show the same image on the laptop and TV, or Extend to use the TV as additional desktop space. PC screen only keeps the image on the laptop and will not send it to the TV. Wait briefly after changing the mode. Microsoft’s steps apply to Windows 10 and 11; labels can vary by Windows version and laptop maker. See Microsoft’s external-display troubleshooting guide.
Mac
Open macOS display settings and check whether the TV appears. If your Mac has an HDMI port, try connecting directly. If you need USB-C or Thunderbolt to HDMI, the Mac port must support video output and the adapter must support the resolution and refresh rate you want. On Apple silicon, macOS may ask you to allow the display accessory. See Apple’s guides to connecting a Mac to HDMI and troubleshooting a dark or low-resolution external display.

3. Bypass docks, hubs, and other accessories
Disconnect docks, hubs, dongles, HDMI switches, and other accessories, then connect the laptop directly to the TV if possible. Accessories can cause connection conflicts, so a direct test helps determine whether the intermediary is involved. If the direct connection works, reconnect accessories one at a time to identify where the signal stops. Microsoft recommends disconnecting accessories during external-display troubleshooting.
4. Cross-test the cable, laptop, and TV
Trying another cable is a diagnostic check, not proof that the original cable is defective. If you can, test these combinations:

- Connect the laptop to a different display.
- Connect another HDMI source to the TV, using the same TV input if possible.
- Connect the laptop and TV with a different known-good HDMI cable.
- Compare a direct connection with the dock or adapter path you were using.
If one combination works and another does not, that narrows down what to investigate. Microsoft and Dell both recommend testing another cable or display/source. See Microsoft and Dell.
5. Restart with a clean connection sequence
If the input, display mode, direct connection, and cable checks have not helped, Dell documents this restart sequence:

- Disconnect the HDMI cable.
- Shut down the computer and turn off the TV or external display.
- Turn the TV or display on.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable.
- Start the computer.
This is one troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that restarting will fix the connection.
6. Check display detection and graphics software
Windows
Open Settings > System > Display and use Detect if that option appears. If the TV is still missing, check Windows Update and the graphics adapter driver. Microsoft advises considering a driver rollback when the problem began after an update, or reinstalling the display driver if earlier steps fail. Dell also recommends updating the graphics driver and restarting. Use Windows or your computer maker’s official instructions rather than assuming a third-party driver updater is needed.

Mac
Check macOS display settings and software updates. If the display remains dark or appears at a reduced resolution, review Apple’s guidance on adapter and cable compatibility; the supported mode depends on the particular Mac, adapter, cable, and TV.
7. Check adapter and display-mode compatibility
If the laptop has no HDMI socket, a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is appropriate only when the USB-C or Thunderbolt port supports video output. The adapter must also support the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use. The laptop’s output, TV input, adapter, and cable all constrain the supported combination; the HDMI cable version alone does not guarantee a particular mode. Apple specifically warns that an unsuitable cable or adapter can result in a dark display or reduced resolution. Check the specifications for your exact laptop or Mac, adapter, and TV before buying a replacement.

8. Decide which device needs service
Use the cross-tests to guide the next step rather than buying increasingly elaborate adapters:
- If the laptop fails with multiple known-good cables and displays, but the TV works with other sources, contact the laptop maker about its port, graphics, or hardware.
- If the laptop works with another display, but the TV fails with multiple sources, contact the TV maker.
- If a direct connection works but the dock, hub, or adapter path does not, investigate that accessory and its compatibility.
- If a port is visibly damaged, stop using it and seek service.
Dell’s repair guidance is specific to Dell devices; repair options can depend on warranty status and physical damage.
